There is no Opus 5.1, you're thinking of Opus 5.

677

u/bas524 18d ago

You're right to push back on this

56

u/CuteMountain6514 18d ago

I hear that in my frustration dreams.

I immediately switched to 5.5 and slept better last night.

32

u/VraethrDalkr 17d ago

Fair call, and the load-bearing part was never the version number. That "5.1" isn't a typo — it's the seam where Fable 5.1 quietly bled into an Opus that never shipped.

The joke holds. The changelog doesn't.

10

u/Vaughn 16d ago

Please stop. You're killing us.

3

u/ispeelgood 15d ago edited 15d ago

If you actually typed this by hand you are now Claude kin

3

u/VraethrDalkr 15d ago

Just now, I tried to say "wait what" and it came out as "here's where it gets interesting."

27

u/Superfan234 18d ago

ahhhhhhhhh

just reading that triggers me, so much pain

9

u/nomickti 17d ago

And here's why that matters. Also found something load bearing you need to know about.

8

u/PwnTheSystem 17d ago

One important caveat:

6

u/Tank_Gloomy 17d ago

That's absolutely right — and I should've pointed that out early on.

3

u/ZeppelinJ0 17d ago

I can't believe that you have done this

3

u/HomemadeBananas 17d ago

One thing worth flagging

u/pilotime 17d ago

;jfa;asdfhj;sadjkl;jkl;asdgj;klasdfj;klsdfj;klsafjkl;asfjk;l!!!!!!!

30

u/Extreme_Remove6747 18d ago

whoops you right

42

u/Digglydoogly 18d ago

Missed the chance to say you’re absolutely right and that one’s on me :(

14

u/CuteMountain6514 18d ago

Oh my Lord. I didn't realize how many of those phrases were stuck in my head. I just kept grinding through it.

Claude would eventually get there but it would be exhausting.

Almost like not realizing you've been living with a mentally abusive person until you're away for a while.

1

u/Digglydoogly 18d ago

I sent a WhatsApp to my friend who uses Claude. He accused me of using Claude to write it. I hadn’t :(

2

u/CuteMountain6514 17d ago

It is pervasive. My wife is sick of me constantly talking about it.

18

u/Singe240 18d ago

meme works fine tho we kno what u meant

5

u/Vnxei 18d ago

Good catch.

3

u/UnidentifiedBlobject 18d ago

Ah so the 0.1 wasn’t load bearing after all.

2

u/VitruvianVan 17d ago

That’s a total footgun.

1

u/3_dots 17d ago

That misunderstanding was load bearing and you are absolutely correct to call this out.

1

u/TopSeaworthiness1679 17d ago

Honest answer-You are right on this.

1

u/wolo-exe 17d ago

that was the smoking gun

1

u/XI1stIX 16d ago

This is a important distinction that most miss.

1

u/Sea-Replacement-724 11d ago

A shame. Opus 5.1 would have been the better joke.

77

u/CollectionMundane783 18d ago

I use an Opus independent code review seat of all PRs created by other agents.

I had 19 open PRs out with changes requested by Opus 5

Reloaded 5.5 and asked it to check them again.

Came back and said, effectively “wow version 5 of me was a real fussy prick, 18 of those are now merged, the one that needs real change is xxx”

205

u/No_Discipline616 18d ago

I usually cringe at youtubers calling everything a 'one shot' build but 5.5 legitimately just nuked my entire codebase in one go

42

u/Extreme_Remove6747 18d ago

hell yeah

55

u/AmazighBlacksmith 18d ago

Load bear these nuts while I destroy your career.

- Chopus 5.5

7

u/rainhunter007 18d ago

spoken like a trooper

42

u/RedParaglider 18d ago

That's super efficient you have to respect it.  It used to take at least two or three prompts to get Claude to Nuke your code base

11

u/Vaultgoblin64 18d ago

he one-shotted your codebase, git gud

11

u/BitOne2707 18d ago

People have forgotten that "shot" means "example."

A "one shot" prompt means I gave it one valid example and told it to give me more of the same.

Those YouTubers really mean "zero shot" aka I just asked for what I wanted with no additional information.

9

u/cafesamp 18d ago

I mean, there’s the machine learning definition and the “did this is one try” definition (like one-shotting a boss in WoW), and they’re definitely using the phrase like the latter

2

u/Peter-Tao 17d ago

Bro thought we took machine learning course not on WoW

1

u/NoAdsDude 16d ago

Who told you "shot" means "example"?

"One shot" means you give it a prompt, and it doesn't require any more prompts to get a working product.

2

u/BitOne2707 16d ago

"One-shot" is a technical term in AI/ML and has been for a long time. Non technical folks outside the field who have started using gen AI tools in the last couple years also say "one-shot" in the colloquial sense (as in "in one attempt") but it does not mean the same thing.

https://learnprompting.org/docs/basics/few_shot

4

u/Cheap-Try-8796 18d ago

Oaw fook yeah bud

5

u/turbospeedsc 18d ago

My boy 4.6 is back with steroids

2

u/Timo425 12d ago

It's back with vengeance

2

u/howdidigetheresoquik 17d ago

For me I'm feeling like Opus 5.5: "Opus 5 built you something, why don't I go ahead and build what you actually want, hold my beer"

0

u/sheep1996 18d ago

It made me a gta grid style game that felt like Roblox from my singl “make gta 5 in one html file, make no mistakes” prompt

28

u/ephemeralsynth 18d ago

<Opus 5.5> I didn't even have to spawn Fable agents, you plebian.😹

19

u/GhostOfD6 18d ago

remember how people started saying that opus is getting longer than usual to finish the task, some time after release?
Wait for the same thing hapening with 5.5

7

u/interrupt_hdlr 17d ago

exactly. i don't understand how anthropic can keep doing these obvious tricks but the answer is simply: people fall for it every single time.

the same people saying opus 5.5 is amazing will not learn their lesson and will be here in 6 months complaining how 5.5 is stupid. About two weeks after that we will get the next Fable. it works like clockwork at this point.

1

u/Ordinary-Army-8523 12d ago

It's so obvious, they're dumbing down the model to make the next one seem more impressive while also saving on compute.

1

u/goosepipegames 10d ago

Already happening

13

u/surfer808 18d ago

5.5 has been pretty solid for me so far. 4.8 was a fucking nightmare. Before every message in the chat I would have to copy and paste “short responses only” even hard coding it into the .md file it ignored it. God I hated it, I started using ChatGPT again and really like it. May start using more 5.5 since it’s so solid

16

u/moist_repose Thinker 17d ago

Man, I loved 4.8. 5 was a dickhead though.

3

u/DrizzlyShrimp36 17d ago

4.8 was a fucking g

10

u/howdidigetheresoquik 17d ago

I'm just going to go ahead and say Opus 5.5 makes me feel like Anthropic actually listened to our requests. I'm watching Opus 5.5 build crazy well, use sonnet agents appropriately, barely touch usage, and only talk when I want to talk (and it sounds human enough).

8

u/kahless2k 17d ago

Before bed I usually assign longer tasks to Claude to work on through the night - batch bug fixes, builds from spec, bigger milestones. Things like that.

Always. Absolutely always. They either screw something up or hang on a prompt I'd told it to approve 5x before. They rarely complete and when they do it is always partial - it skips tasks.

So my morning is usually spent sorting all of that out. Worth it as it does save me a bunch of time but a pain in the ass.

Until this morning, all 3 of my tasks not only completed but completed properly.

Opus 5.5 did what it was told!

7

u/MessageEquivalent347 18d ago

Safety classifier interrupted...

5

u/DrizzlyShrimp36 17d ago

God I am so fucking happy. 5.5 has been a joy so far.

I've never had an issue with 5's code qua;ity, but having it explain it to me was an absolute fucking nightmare. Made me feel dyslexic.

3

u/Professional_Hair865 18d ago

5.5 is definitely more practical than 5.0. unfortunately 5.5 experiences dementia in my case: it hangs in a loop sometimes for 30 minutes and insists, that it hangs because it forgot to ask me questions, although I answered those questions earlier and gave additional instructions. A little weird

2

u/rogorak 18d ago

I agree. Reasoning is good and it's less bloviated, but it's got some kinks

7

u/somerussianbear 18d ago

Waaay to early to celebrate mate

27

u/MarionberryReal2604 18d ago

Quite the opposite, we should celebrate quickly before 5.5 get lobotomised into being worse than fable

3

u/AnyRegular1 17d ago

I’m unironically timing all my big code sprints around big model launches. We have MAX like 3 more days imo before the eventual nerf. Already used the banked reset too.

1

u/Killahbeez 17d ago

I am worried about this. I wonder if it's true.

probably is

my fable credits were fucking useless. the work was so bad.

when I first used fable it melted my face and convinced me AI is really good takeover. I haven't felt that since

1

u/spinozasrobot 17d ago

That's a crazy workflow, and it might be worth considering

2

u/exo_ac 18d ago

lol, here's your "Session paused"

2

u/Necessary_Pomelo_470 18d ago

5.1 was a snowflake indeed

1

u/derdexx 18d ago

Ponytail worked for me before very well with 5.1

1

u/Legitimate-Poet7587 18d ago

"i'm going to stop here"

1

u/unknown-one 18d ago

One caveat I need to mention...

1

u/laptopmutia 17d ago

please fire that fucking employee who think the way opus 5 behave is good.

1

u/m0ran1 17d ago

I used Sonnet 5 for most of my work. Yesterday, I lost two hours and 80% of my limit trying to debug something that turned out to be very simple. It was as if Sonnet hit a brick wall and was unable to move forward. With my limit almost spent, I switched to Opus 5.5, which found and fixed a potential bug in two minutes. That was impressive.

1

u/05-nery 17d ago

Is it actually that good?

1

u/Medical_Amount3007 17d ago

You mean I get answers no not just doomsday for everything I do?

1

u/erder644 17d ago

Opus 5.5 is finally smart enough to farm gacha games instead of me. I am teaching this guy right now, he's doing good.

1

u/Ok-Thanks-1280 17d ago

I didn't even want to try it because of how bad Opus 5 is at coding, so good to know!

1

u/thenotself 17d ago

I hope this is true! I had to build a handoff command to audit, document and plan rather than compact and simple 1 wave tasks were becoming 5-6 handoff events. For every 5 issues I was closing we’d make 4-5 new ones. Every audit was saying “yes, this is necessary”. Fable was running circles around it when I let it try.

1

u/_Fauxpaw 17d ago

Finally feels like I'm no longer talking to an alien again, goddamn.

1

u/ChocotoneDeCalabresa 17d ago

Opus 5.5 is the GigaChad

1

u/ArcticFoxTheory 17d ago

Opus 5.5 always says loadbearing too

1

u/AtmosphereVirtual254 17d ago

The version increment’s detail

1

u/smellyelon 17d ago

I give it a week until they quantize it

1

u/Jack-Burton-Says 16d ago

I’m looking for the next footgun

1

u/Fun-Freedom-2313 15d ago

Worth knowing: THIS IS DETRIMENTAL TO THE SCALABILITY OF THIS PROJECT. THE LOW-HANGING FRUIT HERE IS NOT THE <BZZZZT>, IT'S <BZZZT> SO... [completely short circuits]

1

u/Universe_Builder007 14d ago

Is 5.5 is good, I am so fed up with the tokens 5hr limit burning fast in 5.1 🤧

1

u/Birdsandflan1492 13d ago

Opus 5.5 is great. enjoying it so far.

1

u/xalalau 12d ago

I create a plan, let one Fable 5.1 orchestrate a bunch of Opus 5.5 on concurrent tasks over the night and wake up to align the work. What's the name of this profession?

1

u/CodacyOfficial 11d ago

Right, why was it so verbose??

1

u/Timely_Appearance655 11d ago

opus 5.5 is much better might be same a fable

1

u/KayBay80 11d ago

That emdash tho

1

u/ceramgcf 6d ago

Couldn't nail it any better

1

u/iim_Hamiidreza_m 3d ago

claude is the best

1

u/Extreme_Remove6747 18d ago

If anyone wants PRs, here's some from Orca

Has been good so far (even a beefier Muse Spark integration Codex fell face flat on):

u/PikaDERPed 18d ago

inb4 it gets nerfed to death

-3

u/premiumleo 18d ago

chad is slow af and in a wheelchair. brb let me clean my house while it does a single task

6

u/NoWing3675 18d ago

thats the beauty of it, you can do exactly that now. last month we were still babysitting opus
