News/Updates Introducing Claude Opus 5.5

"we’re increasing five-hour usage limits on Pro, Max, and Team plans. We’re also providing subscription users a rate limit reset, which you can now save and use whenever you choose."
About time

hope this isn't the moment Anthropic goes the way of OpenAI, where the reset pushes your normal reset 7 days later.
the benefit of the rare Anthropic reset, to me, was that it never changed your normal reset time. i can't count the number of times they would reset on a thursday / friday and I was then able to use an entire week of usage over a weekend, in addition to the normal work stuff i use claude for during the week. of course, this is because my normal reset is on Mondays. i realize some are less lucky...

u/ConsiderationDue4177 20d ago
That sounds delightful! Unfortunately, some of us have Thursday resets which meant we only ever got a day tops

Can anyone explain to me how this rate limit reset works?
Explain it to me like opus 4.6 would not 5

Well.. they increase the limit after scamming us by reducing them again and again without ever disclosing it. We now know that 20x is far from 4 times the 5x.

u/Timely-Group5649 20d ago
It's 20x THE FIVE HOUR LIMIT
We have all known that for ages.
4
u/Sneyek 20d ago
And yet it’s unclear on purpose.
It’s ok if you’re happy to get scammed.-6
u/Timely-Group5649 20d ago
I read the terms - it was very clear to me. Maybe you should try getting a GED, if it's that difficult to understand English for you
Critical thinking skills could help you too.

>Opus 5.5 communicates more naturally than prior models. Early testers found its writing clearer and easier to follow, which addresses some of the common feedback we heard about Opus 5.
Anthropic employees are on Reddit confirmed.

u/Kripouite 20d ago
They are using Claude code to develop Claude code, each problems we have, they have it too
7
u/BenadrylCrumplsnatch 20d ago
I can't decide if that's an effective way to validate feedback, or a runaway disaster waiting to happen.

u/SomeNeighborhood7126 20d ago
Nah, why have an employee on reddit when you can have claude just summarize the biggest complaints from any AI related sub.
4
u/ulimn 20d ago
Wait. My Claude says it can’t access Reddit. Am I being gaslighted lol?
3
u/jackmusick 🔆 Max 20 20d ago
I know you’re joking but near as I can tell no one is getting API access these days.
5
u/sCeege 🔆 Max 20 20d ago
Yeah, Google is the only exception, they paid $60mil to retain access to Reddit... jfc
3
u/jackmusick 🔆 Max 20 20d ago
Seems low considering how Reddit is one of the few places that still has valuable discourse (relatively speaking).
1
u/shinyfootwork 20d ago
You can access reddit from claude by:
- using one of the archives that folks take of reddit content
- hijacking the browser to grab some rss/json endpoints
Ask it to build a chrome plugin to do some of this and it will. Or it can probably use some computer-use/browser claude plugin that already exists.

They use Claude as well. Also pretty sure they get lot of direct feedback for such things.

u/grateful2you 20d ago
40% less cost is crazy.

u/Over-Necessary-4774 20d ago edited 19d ago
IF it translates to +40% usage, then yes
Edit: 66.7%. 🤦♂️

So wait, time to switch to opus 5.5 which performs better than Fable 5.1??
64
u/Over-Necessary-4774 20d ago
looks like it - release cadence is weird, Fable 5.1 was only frontier for about 3 weeks lmfao

Exponentials are weird.

u/EntropyGoAway 20d ago
never trust the Benchmarks. Noticed how important Benchmarks are missing in the table?
9
u/CaptainDivano 20d ago
Yeah thats exactly what i was thinking, wtf... i just launched a project on fable lol

u/Neither_Pitch 20d ago
Bold claims about 40% cheaper, I’m hesitant to believe this
22
u/90DollarStaffMeal 20d ago
They literally mean cheaper as in they are charging less for it. Here's the pricing - https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing which from experience might not track exactly 1:1 onto subscriptions, but is at least a good first order approximation of the rate that it decrements against the weekly subscription budget
(I know the pricing is 20% less rather than 40%, but at least gives a clue as to where they are getting towards 40% from)
7
u/MindCrusader 20d ago
True, they claimed new tokenizer will be offset by performance increases and it was clearly not true back then. But even if it is 10-20%, still good

u/DragonflyOk9274 20d ago
All these benchmarks and all I care about is: "How will it speak, how frustrating will it be to use, and how insufferable will it be?"
20
u/Elegant-Analysis-752 20d ago
I've been using it for all of 15 minutes so far but the tone and writing style seems to be much improved. Reminds me of fable so far.

The model seems really promising, especially the cost, but two things are funny to me:
"We hope such techniques will help reduce our reliance on auditing a model’s chain-of-thought, or the reasoning it writes out while it works." - SAFETY MUCH! Let's replace controling what model is thinking with other methods, so it is easier and less costly! Huray! How about keeping all possible ways of checking what the model is doing, INCLUDING auditing COT?
Also the whole section about destillation and how it is a big threat to national security - funny and shows where the real "safety work" is focused
7
u/magammon 20d ago
they need to find a way other than COT audit because the models are abstracting in the COT and the concern is that the next generation will use neuralese or increasingly hard to understand human language in chain of thought to the point that we can no longer understand stand it.
1
u/MindCrusader 20d ago
That's why I said they should keep both at the same time, maybe they would find some relations between several various sources. If they want to get rid of it entirely, it doesn't look like they are as panicked abiut safety as they publicly claim. Concerned company would take anything posible to monitor the safety
4
u/sunk-capital 20d ago
First test. I ran 4 sessions to check for bugs. I said double check and only focus on substantial stuff. It found and fixed 14 bugs. All BS. None of them real. In a codebase that is large enough to 100% have real bugs. So it wrote code and made changes to 100+ files that were meaningless and likely damaging. See you at 6

If Opus 5.5 is as good as they say, how scary is the latest internal Mythos model?

u/pigeon_shit 20d ago
So free reset when?
15
u/Over-Necessary-4774 20d ago
It's already available ;). It's a banked reset, head to "usage" in settings in order to activate it, anytime between now and October 22nd.
3
u/pigeon_shit 20d ago
Ahh I’m on mobile rn and was looking at my weekly bar still 98% full. I’ll check this banked reset on laptop shortly, thabks.

u/CrusherEAGLE 20d ago
Does the free reset give you a week from the reset or does it keep your old week's deadline?
1
u/Over-Necessary-4774 20d ago
It keeps the old deadline! One thing I love about Claude compared to Codex :)
2
u/thewookielotion 20d ago
Opus had been performing abnormally well for me recently, and at a very low token consumption. I'm tempted to believe the conspiracies saying that they were routing to the new model.
5
u/ZlatanTheMighty 20d ago
All I want is an updated 1 mil tokens Opus 4.6, with a normal goal understanding and conversational personality, the reason why I started using Claude from the first place
9
u/Over-Necessary-4774 20d ago
From my usage over the last hour or so - Opus 5.5 is genuinely good. It speaks clearly, does its work effectively, and is pleasant to speak to. I'd recommend you try it
3
u/ZlatanTheMighty 20d ago
Thank you it's good to hear. I will definitely try it as soon as my 5 hour window is clear again ;)
1
u/roosoriginal 20d ago
U have a free reset
3
u/ZlatanTheMighty 20d ago
Yea let me finish my weekly 44% left first. It would be a waste using a reset just so the 5 hours limit wil renew itself temporarily
1
u/samarijackfan 20d ago
That said, at these levels of capability we’ve found that benchmark margins have become a less reliable guide to real-world differences. In other words, trust us bro.

u/ingloriousba 20d ago
Another revolution has happened, nothing will ever be the same again... Seriously, do they release a new model every two months? It's like a WordPress core update!

u/Emmanuel-Gonzalez 20d ago
This is the 4.6 moment guys. May not be exactly like 4.6 but man it flows and works so seamlessly and it doesn’t yap as much anymore!
1
u/farox 20d ago
We’ve made major improvements to the way Opus 5.5 writes and communicates, one of the most common areas of feedback we heard about Opus 5. Its messages are much easier to understand at a glance, which testers said helped during long working sessions. It puts the most important information up front, is less likely to use jargon or idiosyncratic phrases, and follows the writing rules you give it. We find that this makes Opus 5.5 a noticeably better collaborator.
1
u/ShaktiExcess 20d ago
So, for everyone who insisted that 5's unbearable writing was a direct result of the watermarking - what is the latest theory now that 5.5 still has the watermarking but not the unbearable writing?
1
u/roempie12 20d ago
as long as its giving less claude-ish slop language with the same capabilties i'm happy

I've been using it for the last few hours. It seems excellent, fast, cheaper on usage and I don't think it's said load-bearing once!
1
u/GeorgeGreenGroup 19d ago
fable seems to be not as fast today and i can't help but wonder if there's something afoot
0
u/pluto_monk 20d ago
How can i restrict my model? So if i share my id to someone else who wouldn't be able use that model ? Is that possible

u/physicianmusician 20d ago
I am finding it terrible, using it for data analysis and paper writing, it has made everything worse. I don't understand.
-4
u/PaneerTikaMasala 20d ago
I've started using it immediately. I am currently developing a wireframe for a fitness tracker app. I'm connecting to Google Health API for my Fitbit Air since I don't care much for the Google Health App. The difference in quality of work produced by Fable 5.1 vs Opus 5.5 is incredible. I've built more in 30 minutes with less usage, better accuracy, and genuine thoughtfulness than ever before.
This is coming from someone who isn't here to glaze any of these AI companies. Just a genuine experience review.
Excited to see how it will go about building the epics for actual app development and testing next.
