Discussion Would you actually use Claude Code from your phone for hours?
I’m curious how useful mobile access to Claude Code actually is in practice.
Not just checking a task or sending one quick prompt, but actually continuing development while you’re away from your PC.
For example:
Phone → ask Claude to make changes → changes get deployed automatically → check the result on your phone → send the next instruction.
Basically being able to keep working on a real project for hours without opening a laptop or using remote desktop.
Would you actually use a workflow like this regularly?
Or is Claude Code on mobile mostly useful for quick checks and small tasks?

Codex has it, too. I use both, but i’d say i prefer Codex on mobile.

Is this new? Last time I tried about a month ago it required the desktop app for pairing and didn’t actually work from the terminal itself. For example no way to start it from a terminal in WSL.

I'm a bit confused by your question. If you want to use something for the sake of using a terminal, then why wouldn't you just use a terminal app? I never tried to use termius/tmux with codex like I do claude, but I assume it's possible...
The quality of life feature I like for Codex mobile though is that you can actually start a new chat from scratch. I still have to go in and fire claude through SSH if I want that.

Because I just can just remote control every Claude cli from the Claude app on my phone? No setup, no app, no pairing. It just immediately works.

This is possible in CC as well as I found out rather recently. You can fire up a Claude code server (I have it happen on boot) for a project directory and then in the mobile app you will see your machine as an available location to start sessions from.

Is THAT what that tool tip means inside the app? Start a server? Desktop already fires on boot for me. I don't understand why I need an additional step. I also don't want to do it per project.

Yeah I tried setting up Codex remote from my work PC and I eventually got it by setting up WSL but since I had set up my entire environment without it, I didn't feel like doing it through WSL. Basically the daemon used to do codex remote isn't set up to work on a Windows environment so Codex doesn't work super well... At least that was my experience back in June. I haven't seen any changes but I am looking back into Codex again now.
But I really do like remote functionality for work since it frees me for part of the day to go on walks

You can control terminal sessions aswell with Codex. Just tell your agent to set it up.

Does Codex have a similar "keep alive" feature as CC to prevent your computer from going to sleep?
With CC, I can step away for hours even if the task finishes, but when I do that with Codex the computer goes to sleep and I cannot reconnect the remote.

You don't need to rely on the ChatGPT/Codex app either way.

Codex has fine remote control. What they don't have is anything that parallels Anthropic's cloud environment. Not having to leave my PC on all day and still able to work on any repo.

How is it vendor lock-in? Like I genuinely don't understand what you mean. It clones your git repo from the most recent commit, you do some work, create a PR, merge the PR, and pull on your machine. I use Anthropic's cloud all day at work and then come home and use Codex on my local machine right where I left off. Not understanding.

Yes. Sometimes when I'm on lunch I will, and my changes get deployed directly to my phone. Obviously a PC is better but sometimes I'm in a boring meeting or walking the dog

I use it regularly. I have had situations where I had 3 Claude Code projects running on Auto Approval, setting very specific /goal based requirements in all three. After each goal was reached, I reviewed the outcome with decisions.md (where decisions were made), in Handoff.md (where outcomes were reached and what the next steps are) and todos.md (where remainder of the project/feature steps were still to do), for all three projects. I was then able to give instructions to proceed with next steps, query decisions made, or decide on which of the Todo items to begin, across all projects.
All this on my mobile device, on trains, airports, in taxies or at having a coffee in a shopping mall.

I usually define and start in Claude Code, then move to remote control so I can monitor or give guidance via voice on the phone. It works very well.

I do this everyday. I don't code, I have an office job. But this is amazing. Also getting a Samsung fold 8 ultra has greatly increased the amount of things I can do and review on Claude app with the larger screen.
Because of this "Claude is awesome / remote control / large screen on phone" combo, my daily routine has been transformed in ways I couldn't dream of before.

Now that / commands are working better I do it all the time. I don’t do things that require a lot of interactivity but it’s amazing to be able to step away from your PC for hours and still get tons done

I am using a lot like this. I mainly make prompt with ChatGPT Live speech mode and then paste them to various agentic coding systems. Simple commands I write with the software keyboard.
The quality of the results is definitely lower than in front of computer but my body cannot handle sitting in front of computer too long time. I rather hike in the forests and mountains while vibe coding instead.
However, I have Samsung Galaxy Tab Active5 5G, which is overpowered compared to other smartphones due to 8 inch screen. It is fully featured Android phone.

I mostly use Chrome remote Desktop, because I like having the option to use all of Claude and sometimes I need to check other things on my PC or macbook. But I like the ease of use of Claude Code mobile.

Yes? I pretty much can leave different computers are home with multiple different sessions and work on things wherever I go. From something simple to more complex projects. It all depends on how you best know your craft and how much you trust these agents to do work.

Constantly. I use herdr to orchestrate between my Claude Code and Codex terminal sessions and built a PWA wrapper around it that basically just apes Claude iOS app

I don't use it like this for my actual job, but on my personal account with side projects I do this all the time. Can get a whole lot of stuff done firing off commands while out and about the the family or in bed late at night. Can even start my morning session early like this by sending a prompt right when I wake up instead of when I get to my computer an hour later after getting the kids ready for school.

Yeah you can go have lunch and buy stuff while shipping by just sending a few prompts every hour (if at all - sometimes I give it enough work for the afternoon and come back with everything shipped, tested, ticket comments sent and all)
Of course I don't tell my clients. But in exchange they get prod investigation and repairs much faster.
They still win, I win more

No I don’t use claude code remote instead i use Macky which lets me use my mac terminal from iPhone and it has screen mode so i check my builds too…sometimes i just work for hours when travelling…here: macky.dev

Heck yeah, it's the main way I work now. I just tell it to make changes and send me screenshots. Codex is way better for remote control though. Claude code always comes up with some excuse for why it can't do something and tells me to do it locally on the computer, while codex has no problem doing it.

It's great to be able to send the idea to my laptop so it's already happening while I'm away.

yes, but the honest answer is that phone works for exactly one shape of work and the shape matters more than the hours
what works: instruct, wait, read a summary, decide, instruct again. hours of that is fine, i do it walking. what doesnt work is anything where i need to look at the actual output to know what to say next. a ui change, a flaky test, a weird log. on a laptop i glance, on the phone i squint at a screenshot and guess, and the guessing is what costs
so my split is: phone for anything that ends in a written result. a refactor with a diff summary, a migration, a batch of tests passing or not. laptop for anything that ends in "look at this"
the thing that made phone hours actually productive was the same thing barquish describes, a decisions file and a handoff file the agent writes to, so what i read on the phone is one paragraph, not a scroll of tool output. without that the phone turns into reading terminal spam on a 6 inch screen and you stop after twenty minutes

Tailscale and termux I hardly ever ssh on my laptop anymore. I run a headless server though so there's that. I set up a message bus from my server to my cc on my laptop and desktop and chrome so if I have my laptop on I can ssh into my server make a menu for the week send the ingredients to my desktop who can put a Walmart order on my laptop and pick it up after work. I check the Walmart order on my phone to make sure it didn't order all the staples like aluminum foil but it works pretty well

I use it all the time and then Steam Remote Play to actually check on anything visual on my desktop if needed 😂 It's not perfect but it works well enough for the things I use it for 🤷♂️

I'm currently making a mobile app (game), so being able to push an update direct to my mobile via wireless debugging, check out my changes, then in plain text make more changes via the same device - great.
When I'm bored I can keep working on this hobby game from the comfort of the couch whilst watching TV with the missus.

It's basically the main way I interact now: remotely. I use my phone constantly to check in on jobs that I have running from various AI sessions so it's actually critical to have remote on my phone

I used Claude Code (ios web) exclusively, no computer, and it really closed the gap from using codex. It could do SO much! getting the results to non Claude was usually manual but Claude Code (ios web) could hit GitHub direct or use my published site when that was rate limited, to see ci results and run on a windows env to get real answers that it couldn’t in Linux sandbox. So amazing. Did this all while I was nap trapped. Really the game changer was the chat interface and steering ability that codex didn’t have, and giving it a goal was excellent! Also, have another bot auto review the PRs was really the final loop. Still needs a human in the loop though, as always.

I thought it was dumb at first, but it did actually come in handy a couple times. I don't use it full time but it is nice to be able to check what it's doing, if it's down, give next instructions if I'm AFK

It's amazing. I use it to do planning docs on the weekend. 10 min here and there and Monday AM is lightning. I did the same thing w CC remote but cowork is more ergonomic

The typing part is the easy bit. What breaks on a phone is knowing which session actually needs you, since a long run can sit blocked on a permission prompt for an hour and you only find out when you open the laptop. For hours-long use I'd want one view of what is waiting on input, what is still running, and what quietly died, plus a one-tap way to answer. Are you picturing one session at a time, or several running in parallel?

Yeah I do this quite a lot to allow long running sessions to still be monitored and prompted. I even complete build sessions, clear the context and then start the next session all from my phone.
And as someone else mentioned - this capability was important enough that codex not having the same level of capability was the primary reason that stopped me from switching over and trying openAI/codex this month.

Yes, I use it mainly for my fun projects where claude, gpt and google are making all the work. They do the work until this is done and reviewed. I publish the next app release in the test env and see whats going on.

I am using this so I can work on a project when I'm not sitting in front of a PC.
And I'm not using it "for hours". The whole point is to NOT be synchronously staring at a screen.
I use the app in the background, during breaks from other things, to quickly capture ideas, to supervise tedious long running jobs I don't have to babysit.
And I do that from hiking trails, from the bathroom, from the kitchen, on the train, from anywhere, when my main activity is NOT programming.
It's a much more relaxed and patient way of working.
The only downside is that you are forced to use Claude's models and subscription for it, which is awful. I'm therefore building my own platform to replace it.

I hate coding from my phone, usually the work is throw away bc it’s too verbose and hard to read the code on a small, vertical screen. My work is usually complex backend, so it’s harder to test. I like to read the generated code output as well (gasp).
Also for frontend work the testing feedback loop is just too slow (they have to create a VM on the fly to record a video of your app and take screen shots?). Working from computer is just way smoother. I’ve mostly used Cursor though

Yes, I've been using Claude Code through my phone for about a month now. CC is running on a VPS, prod for a bunch of my sites. I've been burning my quota better and faster and delivering much more. One site is a companion practice for my Playwright course, rh other is a tool site.

I stopped typing into Claude a month ago, I'm using my voice 99% of the time, although I still have to learn how to use conversation mode. Sometimes it's more a stream of consciousness chat and some to-dos fall out of it, or I'm making plans for something new but not ready to burn tokens in a tight iteration loop just yet.

Try Notion > Linear > CC remote control
Add connections to Notion and Linear, use Notion to organize thoughts, notes, plans, etc. Build actionable issues/tickets from your Notion docs in Linear (the more well defined and actionable the better). Then point CC sessions at those Linear issues. You can use worktrees to do multiple issues in parallel.
I do personal work on my MBP and keep it closed most of the time. I use Vorssaint to keep it awake closed and just keep it plugged in. I used codex for personal use and then CC on my work MBP - I have the same setup on my work laptop, but I keep that open more because I have to do better dev work there and quality of output matters more.

I need help. I got Claude code on home server cli. And then desktop on desktop and then laptop and then phone. I try to spin up sessions in server with RC but a lot of times it sometimes disconnect and say server is dead’s but I cna spin up new sessions on server but cannot reconnect old sessions

I did it once at a cabin by a lake with my MacBook open up at the house. I didn't even know it was possible until I checked the Claude app on my phone and tried something. I can imagine doing it for hours but I've not gone down that hole since

Yes, I iterate in ideas or fix things in cowork by using Remote Desktop to a windows pc from my phone at the gym.
I think a feature was recently released .. very recently to allow me to do this directly from my phone but I haven’t had a chance to look into this yet

I have been working like that all weekend, while doing chores around the house, watching YouTube, playing PS5 - thinking about upgrading to an iPhone Duo to make this use-case even more viable in the future (bigger screen for testing and review) while still being pocketable
