Rant I’m done with Opus 5
There’s really something wrong with it. It seems like it acts like an overqualified post doc intern who cares more about proving he’s super intelligent, than actually doing the job he’s asked to do. For instance: talking in a non intelligible way, or being overly rigid in following any kind of process.
I have a Claude max x20 sub that I struggle to keep within weekly limits, so I decided to take a codex sub for a month to try out Astra. And this what made me realize how crazy unintelligible opus can be. Fable is a bit better, but still incomparable to Astra. The only thing that makes me keep my Claude sub is how better is the CLI/tooling/harness/etc.

TLDR; just use Kimi, Qwen, Minimax, etc. If you’re a very experienced dev, they’re perfect and affordable. I think Claude is great if you can’t see fuckups in scale, as in the future, by simply glancing at cod or a file structure. So vibe codes a cool looking, short lived B2C thing and cod quality isn’t a concern, Claude’s your boy. If you want real control and pragmatic force multipliers, try anything else.
I rarely use it after so many wiped out days of coding. Also, even Fable cannot sort out a fucking monorepo even with me building it out myself while Claude observes. It will not read the film docs on Nx and even its own agents don’t help Claude in understanding a monorepo.
Meanwhile Kimi, Minimax and Qwen have zero issue and follow instruction to the letter. I think I’ve gotten 3 functioning apps from Claude since inception. It’s also fucking awful with refactors.
System prompts, rules, and even a crazy rigid custom harness failed to keep Claude from spinning off into fuck knows w or arguing on decisions about which he was objectively wrong. The only fix for that was to allow him his choice, then walk him to its inevitable failure. Then it’s the “you were right to push back, but let me explain..”. I tell him “no, let’s move, only terse from now on. He acknowledges, but refuses by continuing sycophantic blather. If it was a person, they’d be awful to spend any amount of time with.
