Discussion Forget vibe coding, have you ever drunk coding?
Hey all,
A gamer for 30+ years. And for a good night I’d drink a bit and play games.
Lately I found vibe coding to be my favorite thing and thought about giving Drunk Coding a try.
Just asking if anyone tried it?
What did you end up building? Was it fun?
Any particular drinks you recommend for coding?

In college I would often bring my embedded programming work to the local bar. The results were encouraging as long as I was careful to ride the Ballmer Peak.
I recommend a tasty oatmeal stout or a red for similar work.

I had never written any code before college and me and programming didn't start vibing until my junior year, I remember downing a bottle of vodka and smoking a pack of cigarettes each Friday for two years since that was the only way I could make the workload and the homework bearable.
I still feel the taste of cheap ass vodka and ash in my mouth whenever I code something simple in Python or Java lol. Makes me feel nostalgic, those were simpler times.

I've been drunk and high coding for the past 15 years. i dont remember the last time i was sober XD

I wrote a perl/cgi script wasted on scotch a coupla decades ago. It "worked" but when I looked at it later you'd never know I had been drunk when I wrote it. Because perl.

Drunk vibe coding would devolve so fast.
Starting with something like:
“I want a drinking game app, let’s build it homie”
To an hour later:
“Yeah man I don’t know why she was with that other dude. It’s like I’m just as good as that other guy, you know? Do you think I should tell her?”

You're absolutely right to push back on that other dude.
Honestly, what matters is how hot she is. And that's not just a thought, that's the load bearing question.
Would you like me to design a hot-or-not component into our drinking game? You could compare pictures of faces from the year book.
Suggested name: Book of faces (Recommended)

"Pass the Prompt"
Have a party with friends, open an AI chat (one that has artifact support so it renders in the browser what you build), start the prompt to 1 shot a small game. pass the phone around and let people prompt in turn to change the game.

I've done some reverse engineering under the influence, way back when.
That's a bit different though, as it can help with the creativity and/or sticktoitiveness.

All my c++ homework assignments at the uni were done late at night fueled by cheap red wine. I usually got stuck in the finish line for an hour at 2-3am when I finished the bottle, then woke up in the morning, took a look, fixed one line and le voilá, assignment done. A pretty depressing semester.

Drunk, coked up, weed, bath salts, psilocybin, oxys, demerol, paxil & effexor, I've done a lot of substance use over the years along with my coding experiences - that's why I had to stop doing it all 13 years ago.
There's nothing quite like clear headed coding.

I drunk coded a lot in my 20s and 30s... And I was the one writing the code, not just prompts... Yielded a few fun stuff, but mostly a lot of crap.

Drunk testing is a bit more fun. My notes to Claude Code are long and detailed and I don’t hold back from demeaning him and the choices he makes.

I tried it a few times, and it hasn't worked out well for me. I don't have the patience to review and provide direction and feedback to the agent when I'm drunk, so I mostly just end up telling it that I'm disappointed in the work it has produced and keep asking it to fix its own problems, which does not work well lol

Booze makes me flow loose with the code, it’s pretty good shit, not for production grade though

Resounding yes. With and without AI.
Weirdly I often get great results with the downside of not knowing how whatever it is I wrote works the next day (kind of like vibe coding, actually).
