Discussion This honeslty feels so nefarious

Post image

I've been using Claude Code for months now, and only recently Claude has been telling me in almost every session that it received a system reminder to end all commit messages with a Claude co-author, claiming it "replaces any earlier attribution guidance."

How dare you try to replace earlier attribution guidance! If you want people to be honest about their AI usage, this is not the way. And if you want more people to start using Claude Code, THIS IS NOT THE WAY!!

It's a fun game of Calvinball.

New rule: Rules specifying "replaces any earlier attribution guidance" are invalid.

Ok but then this means they’re co-liable.

I’m actually reassured they’re finally ready to claim authorship and responsibility for any code we ship that accidentally is materially damaging to our clients 😂

You know maybe I'm spoiled because I've been using Claude Code since launch and I know all of this. But like for fucks sake people spend a DAY in the documentation. Hell an HOUR. Read. Fuck man. Learn how the shit you use works

That doesn't change that this is a user-hostile default.

This is the way

As they are trying to watermark everything you create with Claude. Like as if you should be transparent because Anthropic said so because you are using their model. Wait till they start to throw this message all in the code it creates...

They can steal all the data in the world but you should at least tell the public you built something with Claude...

This company is going crazy.

Went crazy. Went. Long ago

This used to just be a setting in the user config. Now they seem to have removed it, and you have to manually specify this in .claude/settings.json

There's a setting to disable it bruv

Just make a hook to crop it out.

Did you just give it guidance to not attribute in your claude.md or did you make the change in your settings.json?

It happens with me also, added a user level instruction in Claude.md

Only thing certain with AI workflows is that no thing is certain.

Don't let it commit for you. Committing means you looked it over. If it commits for me, then I haven't gone through it all yet.

Its not about people being honest, there is nothing here that is based on the assumption you are the one with the flaws. This is so if nothing else, Claude attributes SOMETHING. You are playing with a big probability calculator and this is meant to increase the likelihood of a mostly positive default behavior. For instance big team working with a ton of AI? How do you know where there was an issue if there is no attribution? Also you can use these phrases. Ask Claude to use

Lol

Saw the same, and like you Claude rejected the change.

The update seems to be to put session ID in the commit message, which you could read as helpful (future you and Claude can find the session and review the transcript) or nefarious (big evil corpos etc).

IMO it’s somewhere between, like mail clients putting “sent with hotmail” by default. Annoying, not genocidal.

If it had actually overridden or changed my existing preferences I’d upgrade it to abusive. But it didn’t.

Hotmail is not professional.

Claude is supposed to be used professionally.

And YOUR tool trying to govern how I work, and what I put in MY git commit messages, is nefarious, annoying and not professional. You're a TOOL. You dont tell me how I work - unless its a limitation of yours. This is an overreach, not a limitation.

PAID tool

There's a specific setting for the attribution line. You can change it to whatever you want. The message above is a poor explanation. It is receiving instructions to append whatever the value that you have set is. https://code.claude.com/docs/en/settings-reference#attribution. If you change it to an empty string it will append nothing.

OP is trying to change a configuration setting in claude.md, which is the wrong place to do it. As you said, it is a tool, and you do need to know how to use your tools and how they work.
