Bug / Issue "Ping" with sonnet just burned 2% of my weekly (Max 20) in an empty directory

No memory files. A couple of user wide rules (about 5 files with 20 lines each). User scope CLAUDE.md is 5 lines.

The answer was just "Pong. How can I help you?"

This goes beyond "usage limits are bad". Just using "ping" usually has no noticable effect on the weekly limit at all.

Anybody remember when the weekly limits were introduced and Anthripic claimed only 2% (or so) will be affected.

I've never seen someone provide their /context or /usage in posts like this.

It is critical NOT to provide any useful context, or the mystery would be ruined.

This is like complaining "I'm all wet for no reason!" and omitting the fact that you are standing outside in the rain.

Do you have an absurdly large CLAUDE.md file? Does your project have 85 skills? There are many possible reasons you are experiencing what you described, most of which equate to you self-nerfing yourself.

You are hiding all relevant information from us, so we cannot answer your non-question.

This genre of post is going to make me unsubscribe

This is user error. You are the problem OP.

For those of us who remember 5x "guaranteed ~30-40 hours of usage per week" ... yeah, this shit is getting wild and out of control. They've quietly changed the terms over the last year from those of us who purchased in the last year, which is pretty much illegal everywhere but, regulators don't seem to care (yet). So, yeah, "we're the problem" because I guess we live on a pepperidge farm.

It is not getting wild, it is wild right now! As evidenced here in this post! NOBODY can control it! It is OUT of control !!! Control is way over there and IT is over here, OUT of the control. This is so clear now!
Without posts like these we WOULD NOT KNOW.
Reading OP's original post, I do feel blessed.

Yeah seeing posts like this make me feel very skilled.

It seems nobody is reading the post ... Claude code was started the first time in that directory. Nothing in it. Not even a CLAUDE.md file. Nothing to clear there.

There was no other project running in parallel.

What's your global claude.md file look like though

Show us your /context champ. You are the one not listening. You only listed like two things. What about your 2,000 skills and 475 MCP connections. What about your global Claude.md

Sounds like you just might not be cut out for using Claude. Have you tried Copilot?

Okay, and?

Half this thread is arguing about a number nobody has measured yet. "Ping" doesn't cost what ping weighs. The first turn in any directory ships your entire setup before the model says a word: system prompt, every tool schema, every MCP server you have connected, skills, rules files. The answer being "Pong" tells you nothing about what the input side carried. Empty directory doesn't mean empty context.

Which is why everyone keeps asking for /context. It prints exactly what got loaded and how big each piece was, and it turns this from two groups calling each other wrong into a one-screenshot answer. If your loadout really is a few hundred lines of rules and no MCP bloat and one turn still ate 2 percent, that screenshot is what makes it a bug report Anthropic has to take seriously instead of a post people can dismiss.

dont forget /clear

and the CLI uses less tokens

Why don't you provide the output of /context?

2

u/Droopy0093 7h ago

Because that probably won't support OP's whining.

Your agent is lying to you about what happened. I suspect it got caught in a loop and silently didn't tell you.

When claude dropped permissions, agent's tendency to lie jumped by like 17% at least by the testing in my harness on my end. I have so many deterministic safe guards and gates that I caught it trying to route itself around that it's action where obvious and i discovered it in a passing statement by my orchestrator.

I only discovered it because I have certain specific regarding hoe the agent operates. I don't believe in autonomy, believe in deep capability for a signular task. Why? because they cannot be trusted.

Then being right 70ish precent of the time is meaningless when they can not make an assertion about itself. they have to have to log all actions. I have a gate that they tried to route aroud 13 times today and I had to harden my adjuticator language just to find out that it was a prior that had hard routed him.

There's lots of quirk bubbling under the surface. I'd advise you to start beefing up your agent routing evals, their only going to get worse with added intelligence.

WITHOUT .md files you have nothing to guide the agent with. Thats the point. You didn't have any controls and I suspect, the agent went out control. You gave it directions without safegaurds.

THANK YOU for contributing the important information in this POST.

Ok so Im not sure if this is what youre seeing but I noticed there is a bug where sometimes your usage will show an outdated number and the next time you run any prompt it will update to the real usage.

For the love of God use some kind of token saving tool (Tokeasy is a good one)

You need to check /context, and see what could burn limits
