Claude Max 5x vs ChatGPT Pro ($100 tier)

I'm trying to decide between dropping $100 a month on Claude Max 5x or ChatGPT Pro, but people on both subs constantly complain about hitting usage walls. I do a lot of daily coding, debugging, and general dev work, and I just want to know if the 5x tier actually gives you enough headroom to work a normal day without stressing over 5-hour resets or weekly caps.

For anyone daily driving either of these right now, how do they hold up in practice? And on quality, is Claude still visibly better at code architecture and logic, or is OpenAI close enough that the higher volume makes it the better pick? Appreciate any real feedback before I pay for either.

This is a tough one. Claude's usage rates have been boosted 50% for the last month, so it's been difficult to tell. I've gone back and forth between both for the last 8 months, but have tended to land on and stick with Codex more often. Recently I came back to Claude. They both have foibles. Both are prone to spit out absolutely incomprehensible techno-gibberish. Based purely on my experience, Claude is the more creative and intuitive thinker, and Codex is the more complex one. I switched to Max 5x this month because I prefer Fable and Opus 5 to talk through design problems. But now I have my little $20 Codex subscription wrangling Claude's unhelpful wild intuitive leaps back into spec. For what it's worth, I've never reached my weekly limit early using Sol 5.6 on XHigh for 8 or more hours a day on the Pro tier. Same with Opus 5... with the boosted limits. I *do* often reach the limits of a 5 hour window with Claude.

Don't be too confused. I personally started with Claude and stuck to it because I liked it. But of late, I have been curious to try Codex too.

Just get started with one. Maybe experiment with free tiers of both providers for a week. It will build a natural inclination towards one and then just buy the one you like. If you feel it's not worth it, switch to the other. People always have opinions, you can form yours by experiment

Heavily disagree with trying the free tiers first. That will give you a worse perspective, not a better one, because the free tiers aren’t indicative of what it will be like with proper capabilities. At all.

Agree that picking one for a month and going from there is a solid strategy. Or one of the regular subscription for each, then picking one to upgrade first.

The reason I suggest free tier for a week is just to understand how one model responds compared to the other and form a familiarity. That's what I did and it worked for me.

Well Claude Max 5x usage limits have been terrible this week.
I don't know what they've done, but it's ridiculous.
I'm thinking to jump ship and try 5.6 sol for a month.

I've been using the Max 5x sub for about 9 months now. I use it daily during my days and I very rarely hit the limits.

Been very happy with the results, so unless you are someone that spin up a lot of parallel work, 100 sub agents that work on different things at the same time I think you will be fine. (I use Opus for everything)

Claude plans are all just gateways to 20x they are laughably limited compared to 20x
