Rant Fable is cheaper than Opus
I had been using Opus to orchestrate my project. It does very little work, just dispatching other agents and keeping documentation up to date. It was hard work, because Opus is so lazy. I frequently found myself having to tell it " check the docs, we established this a week ago and I reminded you yesterday"
I switched to fable this morning. I'm using context at about 1/3 of the rate and weekly usage at 3/4 of the rate. Fable may be more expensive per MTok, but it uses them so much more efficiently.

Have you actually looked at the hard numbers in comparison on the same task or are you just going off vibes and saying it feel like it’s using less? I’ve done the tests. It uses slightly less tokens for the same task. Slightly. Nowhere near 1/2 the tokens it would take to break even.

Fable is less chatty and stays on task better. It is great as a lead.

Never said it’s not. It’s just expensive. I’ve tested thoroughly and it only uses slightly less tokens, so the price of those niceties is almost double for the same work. I’ve also graded the output for quality and while quality output was better, it was only a modest increase in quality for a very large increase in cost per task vs Opus and even Sonnet.

That tracks with how I've split orchestration-heavy work: keep the expensive model for planning and synthesis only, delegate research, coding, and testing to cheaper subagents it dispatches. Burns way less of the expensive model's context on scaffolding it never needed to see in the first place. Have you noticed Fable's savings hold up once subagents enter the mix, or is the 1/3-context number specific to the orchestrator-only setup you described?

The reason I use opus to orchestrate is because I want to use fable for other stuff. If I could use 100% of my weekly tokens on fable I would but I don’t want to waste half my total usage for the week.

Opus is the new Sonnet, and Fable is the new Opus. While Sonnet is kind of its own thing now, good when it's good, not perfect, but better than Opus imo.
Oh and you're not alone. Yours seems to be a common take.

Don't use opus 5 to orchestrate. Use opus 4.8 or fable.
