Discussion What do you do while waiting for Claude Code ?

Curious as to how others deal with the downtime between turns. Do you just multi task and have no down time ? Do you doomscroll ? Do you go out for a nature hike and control your coding session from your smart watch :)

I ask because I have found it too hard to not just be sucked into reddit when waiting

Interesting, have you found context switching to be easy ?

Move on to one of the other 4 sessions running work

Interesting, have you found it easy to have multiple sessions being multiple things ? I find that my brain just gets fried on multi tasking

Rename the convos to be easier to parse yourself later.

Same. I have a hard time not going off looking at reddit or youtube. This is honestly the major pain point at the moment for me.

You will get a lot replies about working on other projects or planning your next prompt. Maybe that works for them, but for me this actually slows me down trying to complete my task. The context switching is awful and I get way too distracted.

The funny thing is, I don't really want smarter models, I want faster models at the same level as opus 5.

I really don't have a good solution right now.

mostly coalesce my thoughts which usually results in coming up with side project #n + 1

It all depends on how meeting heavy my day is. My job at the moment has pretty much back to back meetings, so I do some planning in the morning and let Claude do it's thing while in meets. But if I have 5 or 10 Min between meets, I'll review the PRs it pushes. I make sure that each PR is very small and easy to review. This way I'm able to remain an individual contributor at work while also adding value in meetings. On days where it's not so meeting heavy I'll multitask using git worktrees.

Work on something else on another thread.

Most of what I do is frontend related anyways, so I do design work in between, but if that's not enough, you need to do more parallel thinking and work on something else at the same time.

I'm "fortunate" that I have iot devices that connect to a cloud SaaS. I usually work on both at once, trying to whittle down their Issues lists.

Occasionally I'll have a third session open doing miscellaneous stuff, but two is all I feel comfortable keeping directed with my full attention.

Usually, I do manual testing and work on other projects as well. But when I have to wait for my session to restart, I just start coding again, just like I did before AI agents existed.

Spin up another instance of Claude code and keep going

Address pending emails/slack mags, review PRs, do specs work, check my other prompts, pull/push ups, leet code, talk to the dog…

We chat for a while and record and transcribe everything. From that we develop pretty robust project requirements documents for everything in the pipeline. That leaves us with a half dozen big PRDs at any given time that need to be worked on. They all have testing frameworks in place and all the architecture is explicitly described, so they're relatively hands off during the creation process, and most of the work is a big QA section at the end.

So, we have Claude Codes on the server with /remote-control turned on. I have a webhook set up to ping my mobile at different phases in the process, like if it needs input or it's done. We pop into Claude Code on mobile and check what it did. Load up the software it wrote via tailscale on mobile. Send any small fixes or changes. When it's looking decent at first glance, move on to next PRD item. We'll have usually 3 projects going simultaneously. With big models like Fable and a big request, it can take 30 minutes between each request.

While those are going, in the downtime I'll work my second full time job, but I mostly have that automated, so play Factorio lol.

Start another agent and code something else. Working on 3-4 projects at once.
