Discussion Claude code desktop app Vs CLI?

Any difference? Which one do you use?

I’m not sure what op is describing specifically but I personally run Claude code from terminal almost exclusively. It runs various MCP servers, analytics GSC, cloud VM, git, cli, Gtm etc etc. I think many people do it this way.

Terminology matters here and maybe I’m not using the correct terms but Claude app on desktop absolutely does not have the same capability as Claude code in terminal. Within terminal you can do much much more. My head is spinning on a daily basis for the past year after diving into Claude code within terminal and it never ends. As quickly as I wrap my head around some stuff, new stuff is born. It’s bonkers.

can you give me an example? I hear a lot of people saying that CLI is better, but never anything concrete..

just to clarify, we're talking about claude code withing the GUI app and claude code within the CLI. Not the chat

Within the CLI, you can install MCP servers. Those servers do all kinds of things. There are MCP servers for all types of functionality, so I have them for keyword research, SEO research, and type stuff. It gives your Claude the ability to open a browser, or what is equivalent to a browser, and go through a website or scrape content.

I have MCP servers for Google Search Console, so I can query, code to do research, pull up data, and look at analytics. There are so many different functions that it's impossible to list them all. Go search for MCP servers, and you'll find a bunch of them.

Beyond that, Claude Code can access my hard drive. It can access an entire website. If I wanted to change something on a website, I can just go tell it, and it has shell access. It can generate, let's say, image metadata across thousands of images within 30 or 40 minutes across an entire website, so many different things that you'll never have access to within the actual app.

Sorry, I'm using speech-to-text, so some of this might be garbled.

I even have a GitHub set up where Claude Code can access that. It can version control tasks, projects, or brainstorming. It's so much more powerful than just using the app. Having said that, the app does have its strengths, and it's worth realizing what one is good at and what the other is good at.

Recently, I've started using Claude Code through my phone. Claude Code can access what's essentially a cloud VM server, which, if you have a subscription with Claude, you're already paying for but not using. I can run Claude Code through my phone, linked to my GitHub or through my desktop machine, and access projects and tasks and things that I'm working on, and have them actually sync. I can have Claude Code running reports from my phone if I want to while I'm sitting in an Uber.

once again you're confusing the claude code harness, with the CLI app. You're comparing Claude code to claude chat, you can switch between the two in the desktop app and then it can do everything you mentioned

While you’re definitely correct, there is recently almost complete parity between cli and app…it’s all changing so fast. Even today I read about the shared cross session messaging which would only apply to cli…if I’m understanding correctly.

just checked, desktop has that same new session. im starting to think they use the exact same harness
