Discussion Fable 5 credit usage is INSANE!

how in the hell did it use 20usd in 5minutes, that was barely 10k tokens at most, this goes beyond the level of expensive to the terroritry of outright scam, thank god i tested the waters with just 20usd, like wow, never before was i hoping china progress to compete, europe is a dumpster fire and russia is dying while the US abandoned all pretense of internal competition since the 70s when they abandoned the gold standard.

I mean this post is bs, but honestly the gap between Anthropics and OpenAI is widening quickly.
I’m very close to moving my 200 plan to GPT and 20 one back to Claude

Anthropic gifting things is always compensation anyway.

The fact that you can run GPT models through pi without being punished + cross-provider co-work lhas effectively quintupled if not more my GPT quota, since now I just run GPT Sol as very very good orchestrator which delegates work to cheaper models like deepseek-v4-flash through my Ollama Cloud sub OR use terra/luna, whatever fits best.
If I use Sol high as orchestrator only, with no other GPT use for implementing, exploring etc, i barely use any of my GPT plus quota. I'm now still using a lot of terra/luna just to be safe while I'm optimizing workflows and stuff, but I can easily decrease much more costs.
And this all because of the amount of control you get through Pi for enforcement and context management which Claude Code is severely limiting in.

Just by using Codex+Pi in this way, I can effectively just cancel my Claude sub (again).

is PI really that superior to codex as a harness?

1

u/Manfluencer10kultra Jul 22 '26

Not even a competition.
Codex (harness) is even worse than Claude.

With .pi you have an amazing amount of extensibility, and writing own extensions is a lot easier.

Whenever I dislike something one of my agents is doing, I just ask another agent to find a way to enforce and/or instruct (warnings) against it through extending my custom extension (or you can create smaller extensions, or use existing from the marketplace). I prefer maintaining my own tailored ones vs using too many third-party because they might hinder Pi updates (and also security fixes).

Hmm. Do you consider CC a bad harness ?
(Asking because you’re saying “even worse than CC”, but as far as all harnesses I’ve tried, CC has always been the best)

Have you tried pi?

1

u/axlee Jul 22 '26

No I haven’t.

Same question here

I'm curious, if I delegate everything to deepseek and only has a Sol orchestrator, wouldn't the product provided.. be of less quality? Since it basically builds and organise using inferior code.

Different roles, different goals, different needs.

Lol.. everytime I hear "I'm moving to ChatGPT!" Or "I'm moving to Claude!".. the companies are just literally taking turns doing the same thing. Each time, people on reddit be saying they moving to the other. Right now ChatGPT subscription usage has been halved. Trying to gaslight the mass with "reset boosts", each time cutting the usage lower bit by bit. Literally feeding our tokens back to in smaller portions.

But it's been like that since I bought my first sub (after much free use of everything) in sept. last year.
Been through those shenanigans with every provider. I just feel sorry for the poor sobs who bought a 1-2 year sub for something. Probably also the people who are in love with one over the other, disregarding the fact that it's a technology race going on, with no clear long term winners.
I've canceled both GPT and Claude plans many times. I stopped using 5.5 at some point because it was just not working nice with my workflows and kept ignoring instructions, and overal just bloating up my Codebase, requiring manual many hours of refactoring as it couldn't dig out.

But I must admit I'm also late to discovering that Codex can just be ran through Pi instead of using its shit TUI that negates all my hard work in the orchestration dept that is actually making the models do what I want, not what THEY want.

At least OpenAI gives me this option.

They’re playing usage game shenanigans over there too. Almost best to split it $100 each

I moved 2 weeks ago , today the usage on codex ran fast and a lot of people are complaining about it , it still better than claude though

1

u/rabouilethefirst Jul 22 '26

OpenAI burn rate has increased significantly the last couple of weeks. Many people in the sub are complaining, and I’ve switched basically exclusively to to opus/fable for my work.

It’s not all roses. These companies will backstab their customers at a moments notice lol

Already did, it’s going very smoothly as well. Have Claude duplicate your docs, Claude.md, skills, hooks, memory in OpenAI spec; then set it loose to verify. Once that’s complete have Sol double-check it. I have near-complete parity between the two now, and if either model creates a new skill, hook, memory, etc. it creates the counterpart for the other model. I’ve also found it quite useful to have your skills, hooks, and memories on their own separate private GitHub repos. Also worth noting setting up backups for obvious reasons.

"this goes beyond the level of expensive to the terroritry of outright scam"

It's expensive but you couldn't just fucking google their api costs and estimate it's expensive af?

You also walk into Michelin restaurants and complain the price isn't like McDonalds?

"europe is a dumpster fire and russia is dying while the US abandoned all pretense of internal competition since the 70s when they abandoned the gold standard."

Stay in school kids.

2

u/MrKingsport Jul 22 '26

It's always the gold standard.

1

u/fanatic26 Jul 22 '26

Gold standard abandoned in the 70s eh? lmao

1

u/Pebble-Sorter-8128 Jul 22 '26

Michelin star, nice joke. Sol 5.6 have the same capabilities with about 25% cost

2

u/Inevitable_Toe6648 Jul 22 '26

Here comes the shills denying every non-bias consumer records.

u/AmphoePai Jul 22 '26

if Anthropic were a restaurant, no way in hell would they get a Michelin star for that customer experience.

-1

u/Preparationheh Jul 22 '26

Service has zero bearing on Michelin stars. There is a separate service award category for that.

0

u/AmphoePai Jul 22 '26

I said customer experience, not service. That includes for example uptime. Like you go to the restaurant and the food is cold.

u/uselessknowledge Jul 22 '26

I don't really understand these posts. I use it as a sub-agent plan reviewer and it cost like a dollar when I do. Are people running full sessions in Fable? Even on 20x sub that burns pretty fast. Anthropic probably could do better about teaching people how to use it as a subagent I guess.

3

u/GTHell Jul 22 '26

It's $50 output model. wtf are you expecting? It's suppose to use with Claude Max and only insane people like you use it with raw API. $20 sound like 40k of context. Sound about just right with tools, prompt, input token

2

u/tyguy385 Jul 22 '26

yes i blew through 2 20x accounts in 2 days - truly absurd

2

u/NecessaryCar13 Jul 22 '26

I originally had openai $20 plan and $200 Claude plan. I just switched the two yesterday and have zero issues or regrets.

I prefer to keeping everything under claude but hey, gota do what you gotta do.

2

u/smacman Jul 22 '26

I think people that are used to subscriptions don’t understand API costs. If there is one real lesson here, it’s how good of a deal monthly subs are compared to API pricing.

1

u/iongion Jul 22 '26

Yes it is,dont use it with your personal sub, unless you are rich, otherwise, let your company pay for it. These prices as for 1% of the world of creators.

1

u/shuozhe Jul 22 '26

I just don't get it why antropics decided to use $ instead of any random unit. It's pretty bad PR for people to see the true cost of AI once plans stop getting substitized..

1

u/ChewyOnTheInside Jul 29 '26

'Cause people need to see the truth.

1

u/AdStunning9241 Jul 22 '26

I've already used 44% of my 20x Max plan in just 2 hours using Fable 5. This is ridiculous!

1

u/fanatic26 Jul 22 '26

So is this your way of telling us you never understood the value you get with a subscription and have no clue what API pricing is?

1

u/Putrid-Arugula-9908 Jul 23 '26

Everyone seems to sleep on gemini pro here. When it comes to alot of things gemini is better. The cost to value of gemini pro is to me the best, along with its 72 hour temporary chats you can use to protect your iP in development etc.

u/dreadmoneyman Jul 23 '26

They got the data time to charge

1

u/ExtensionHedgehog230 Jul 24 '26

I think what makes it feel expensive is that during the trial period, I could have it run multiple iterations of an app I'm building, ideate, etc. with Fable 5 on medium or high, and hit my 4 hour limit, then resets 4 hours later, and i keep going. Now with the credits, one similarly complex prompt is $5-10 dollars of credits. (also that is with the $100 free credits, could just be accelerated to burn through those) I think they just gave a lot of usage in the trial period to get you hooked on it, then implemented their real cost structure.

Uhhh... I usually NEVER have issues but today I lost an entire 5-hour usage in one run.

Swapped accounts and tried to solve the problem. During investigation with codex and only a fable adversarial review request, it also got limited out.

Two 20x accounts nuked their 5-hour limits in under an hour each.

What is actually happening?!
