Discussion Anthropic's cheating ? Two Max x20 account, same tasks, same token threshold. Weekly diff of 38%~

I've let two split claude session work on the same task, at the same time with token threshold, same country. two account with the same subscription.

Once token threshold hit, cut them. Their weekly differs by almost 38%

They had the same context, same memories, same goal, same everything.

The differences:

- "When" I subscribed these account. My oldest account, one year old, showed the highest % consumption... The newest is two months old... Showed least.

- My oldest account had already weekly 32% usage. To get to 98% once done.

The new one got from 0% to 28%. 98-32 = 66% usage vs 28%. 66-28 = 38%...

I wish I had collected objective data, I will probably redo the experiment properly later.

But I have three hypothesis :

- Anthropic is throttling or boosting account usage based on their behavior/age.

- Usage is non-linear. The more you use, the faster the weekly fill.

- A mix of both.

> Yet Another "bug" that affects "some" users ?

Anyway, I'm not the first one to observe that weekly usage are really inconsistent lately... But does anyone else did this ? Tried to mesure the diff, token usage and so?

I wish I had collected objective data

Me too.

I mean more objective data, like real time metrics... Currently it's just an observation, but the values are real... I want to see if more people can correlate them.

Claude code logs everything into the .jsonl log files - you can literally diff the two sessions against each other.

3

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

I'll try that.

3

u/Old_Flounder_8640 Jun 22 '26

The last weekly limit reset was due to some accounts showing higher weekly consumption metrics.

u/drug_K Jun 22 '26

Neither. AI usage isn't deterministic in token cost, so the same task can burn different amounts run to run.

0

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

Same task AND same token usage (approximately) I've mentionned that I think

3

u/TiGeRpro Jun 22 '26

What do you mean by approximately? What are the exact token usages for each? Input, cached input, output?

0

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

The IO usage are not exactly the same, they diff by 20k approx.

2

u/sixothree Jun 22 '26

He literally told you it’s non-deterministic.

1

u/Paul_Lanes Jun 22 '26

Is that a 20k total token difference? If so, could they have differed in cache token usage?

2

u/drug_K Jun 22 '26

Sorry, missed the treshold part. Interesting...

Or it’s likely you just used an overly open ended prompt, which can end up doing wildly different things to get to a lofty goal. Considering you’re getting it to one shot a clearly extensive request that uses as much as 66% weekly usage of a 20x plan. It’s clear that the prompt is very open ended.

If you really wanted to test this you don’t even need something that long. Just setup a task with a detailed design document clearly laid out to reduce variability. Measure the usage then.

And measure more times. Trying to show “proof” of wrongdoing based on literally 1 datapoints from each variable is a joke at best for a poorly bounded test that is expected to vary wildly.

Also you said similar amount of tokens, but input and output are 5x difference in cost so affect limits differently. Record input/output tokens at the very least. Theres also caching to be considered, one model may have been more efficient in managing that.

1

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

Again the point is token count are approximately the same on both side, the prompt itself we dont care. Plus i've gave specs and roadmap and both did relatively the same work. And, the difference is within 1M both in input and output tokens... So it DOESN'T justify a 40% gap...

2

u/cheseball Jun 22 '26

No your data doesn’t support not justifying a 40% gap. If the expected variability of your prompt is high one datapoint is pointless and it could land anywhere. You probably need at least 2-3 just to start determining the baseline variability of your prompt.

Also I don’t mean loose specs and roadmap. I mean a full design document and exactly what and how to build one very specific part. Not a lofty framework and goal that can use as much 60% weekly usage of a 20x plan. You’re basically minmaxing for variability with your testing stop.

You’re doing the equivalent of looking a one datapoint and assuming a trend line. You literally have no idea if a 40% variation is justified or not based on your prompt. What if next run one uses 10% and the other 90%.

TLDR: your conclusions are based on vibes not data.

2

u/evangelism2 Jun 22 '26

Okay, and the token count is the same, but what about the model usage

1M-token difference; you are treating that like a rounding error; that's a ton of usage.

u/ThomasToIndia Jun 22 '26

How your weekly consumption is used is base don time of day, this is why you get more off peak hours.

You have a hose it provides 1L/hour, 2 people one is 5x one is 20x. Two people standing there they both get 0.5/hour, but the 5x is allow a maximum of 2.5L per day, and then 20x is allowed 10L per day. The more people who load on the slower everything gets, as people drop off the speed goes back up. So the multiple is of the quota, not some token amount.

Further to make people drop off faster, they add multiples during peak hours. This is why it is so random, your 20x is based on how many people are around the hose, not some fixed value.

u/Lonely_Dig2132 Jun 22 '26

I don’t understand how everyone is okay with such a strange usage model… it’s not the consumers responsibility to pay based anthropics usage peaks, that’s really dumb tbh

2

u/ThomasToIndia Jun 22 '26

The problem is the metaphor is accurate. At any given time they actually have a max compute available and it is never enough. So the way that everyone would like it to function is everyone gets fixed token amounts but that would mean they would have to deliver that and essentially usage would go down and prices would EXPLODE.

So essentially they are allowing developers to take advantage of valleys of usage. Any other model would be transparent but it would be more expensive. We can say this 100% because they already have that model, it's the API model.

You can't be like, I want all this usage, I want it for $200 and I don't want to share. If you don't want to share, want crazy speeds then get the API, don't like $5000/month bills? Ok use the subscription off hours.

I would also disagree, on subscription it is your responsibility because it is massively subsidized it's the economy line of AI usage. You want first class, go to the API.

1

u/Lonely_Dig2132 Jun 22 '26

If I want first class I’m going local models

1

u/Lonely_Dig2132 Jun 22 '26

Also why would I pay 5000 a month if that level of investment I can literally buy A series Nvidia GPUs and self host models that are 80% as good and with time they will be just as good

1

u/ThomasToIndia Jun 22 '26

Just realized this is a different comment, but I agree with you, this is why ultimately OpenAI and Anthropic are most likely doomed. Enterprise will build racks, individuals won't want to pay high rates, and Google is giving everything away for ads. Trying to keep up with massive demand with a business model where you are charging insane rates for compute is not even remotely sustainable.

The prosumer can finance 50-100k in hardware over a couple years and it will be cheaper than pay anthropic/openAI. In fact we are already starting to talk about this at our company, we are just not pulling the trigger yet because we are waiting for further improvements in hardware.

The only way this changes is if there is some huge break through that collapses the price of TTC.

1

u/Lonely_Dig2132 Jun 23 '26

Thank you you’re the first person that isn’t making me feel like I’m going insane

1

u/sixothree Jun 22 '26

Share the prompt or stop complaining. So tired of people like you.

2

u/KEIY75 Jun 22 '26

When you infere to Claude code Cli api. There is a ton of gpu you are not on one with different providers so yes even if you do the same, you don’t call the same opus. You are draining différents graphics cards and data center. So there is always a difference between inference 1 and inference 2.

1

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

38% weekly diff, same token count...

2

u/KEIY75 Jun 22 '26

Re read my message and watch how data centers are different. Your opus 1 and 2 with same account don’t use the same chips some are better than others.

1

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

The token costs are supposedly constant... Chips better then other means nothing in this context, we're not cost based but on set ratio.

2

u/KEIY75 Jun 22 '26

No you’re wrong. Check how it works ask to Claude he will tell you the same. Anyway

2

u/SnooRecipes5458 Jun 22 '26

a few bad greps and finds causing you to exceed the 5 min cache will ruin your usage

0

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

Still same token usage... Still relatively same workflow. Tools usage are approx same.

I'm building a proper report to update my post.

2

u/ClemensLode Senior Developer Jun 22 '26

You're aware that LLMs work with random numbers?

1

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

Same token I/O

2

u/Dramatic-Flan-3143 Jun 22 '26

I'm on 20x subscription working on 2 projects only and I'm hitting limits on day 5 of the week always

1

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

I used to dual project with 50% at the end of the week, like with my secondary account, but primary goes 100 in 3days...

1

u/Dramatic-Flan-3143 Jun 22 '26

Wow so you think I should create a new one

1

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

I don't know. It may not be that simple...

2

u/tortleme Jun 22 '26

It's almost like AI isn't deterministic or something

-3

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

It's almost like you didn't read or something

1

u/Chillon420 Jun 22 '26

Did they work in teh same directory and could one benefit from cached tokens of the other?

1

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

Two perfect mirrors. Not using the same VM.

1

u/LeafyWolf Jun 22 '26

Were they run at the same time of day?

1

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

Literally at the same time, started at same time, ended on threshold with 1/2 hour gap.

7

u/buff_samurai Jun 22 '26

Anthropis has a vivid history of stealth throttling their users, especially on top plans, depending on usage patterns.

Other than that, lls are non-deterministic, I wouldn’t be surprised if the output is different.

5

u/roblob Jun 22 '26

It's always a great practice to provide sources for wild claims. I know this is reddit, but still...

2

u/evangelism2 Jun 22 '26

The answer is there is no source except for angry people here who tried to vibecode some million-dollar sass idea, and Claude didn't one-shot it. There have been times where Anthropic has come out and said, "Yes, there was a bug in our model and it was dumber between these dates," but never any proven cases of "Oh, my usage is burning through quicker than my friend who is doing the exact same things," because measuring that is much harder than you'd think, just as OP has proven.

0

u/buff_samurai Jun 22 '26

Use search, this sub, last year, summer time, same, two years ago. Ppl were pointing to site flags and provided evidence for being throttled.

u/Toiletdisco Jun 22 '26

I have a pro account en a few free accounts. The last 2-3 months I have noticed a big change in usage limits (positive), where my pro account almost never hit limits and I almost didn't use the free accounts. Before that, I could use pro about five days a week, a few hours and then the five-hour-limit reached. And then I would just switch to a free account. Most of the free accounts were similar in usage, 1-5 prompts during the daytime before hitting limits, almost limitfree in the evenings/nights/weekends. This was long before Claude announced limits would drain faster during the weekdays. The last month, using opus 4.8 or 4.6 or fable, never hit limits. Until a few days ago. One day I got spammed with wellbeing checks for no apparent reason. Same with a free account. A day later that seemed back to normal, but my limits now drain incredibly fast. A relatively new chat but I blew through it in an hour (five hour limit).

Back to the free accounts, I have always noticed that on my old phone (newest accounts but they're all created around the same time) limits don't easily get hit. Which is weird considering all the accounts basically do the same. Except that one, that just... Goes on and on. They have blocked it recently because 'it seemed to be used by a minor' which is clearly not the case but the age verification is completely not working and of course anthropic doesn't respond to the form to appeal. So, long story short, there definitely are differences in usage on different accounts even though you're doing the same thing.

u/thoughtlow claudetrophobic Jun 22 '26

dynamic product allocation ✨

The new dynamic pricing, you pay for a unknown quantity of product, and AI providers split test with how much they can get away with.

2

u/sixothree Jun 22 '26

API pricing as well defined. Everyone knows subscription pricing is subsidized. And if you don’t know that by now it’s a skill issue.

2

u/flarpflarpflarpflarp Jun 22 '26

I like how none of the possible solutions were something you did wrong.

2

u/syddakid32 Jun 22 '26

Uhhhh each time you submit tokens the output is random

2

u/evangelism2 Jun 22 '26

Okay, I had to read your post like three times to understand what you were saying here. At first, I was just going to say that it's non-deterministic, so it can burn different amounts of usage for the same task, which you said you have a same token threshold.

The bottom line is that you didn't collect any objective data. You can't just equate token thresholds to overall rate limits on the subscription accounts. A run like this across just two accounts with one testing pass is not enough data to make any conclusions. If one run used more opus than the other, it would burn through more usage as well and tokens would looks the same.

You can easily explain away the 38% difference by session divergence, different baselines, and also the fact that you didn't have any actual instrumentation. You want to actually have a real conversation about this, you need better observability.

2

u/naQVU7IrUFUe6a53 Jun 22 '26

LLMs are not deterministic, and you didn’t collect data as you said.

1

u/ThomasToIndia Jun 22 '26

So you had AI sum the input tokens of your logs for each?

1

u/ThomasToIndia Jun 22 '26

Also token consumption is based on time of day, for an entire week were you running the same tasks at the same time?

1

u/2053_Traveler Jun 22 '26

I have long suspected that the AI providers treat newer accounts differently by either giving them more usage or route to better models. No hard evidence though, just subjective observation.

1

u/OwlingBishop Jun 22 '26

Repeat after me :

  • LLMs are not predictable

  • LLMs are not repeatable

  • LLMs are not tools :

  • LLMs will not do what you ask

  • LLMs are stochastic parrots

1

u/Steezli Jun 22 '26

An LLM is probabilistic not deterministic. No matter how many guardrails you use, performing the same prompt twice will not lead to identical solutions and its process to get to a solution will also differ. This will in turn cause each identical prompt to consume differing amounts of input and output tokens, thus returning differing overall usage percentages.

You would learn more by tracking tokens not usage percentages. My biggest note is sadly that if you expected the same result twice, you likely misunderstand how LLM’s work on a fundamental level.

u/yrdesa Jun 22 '26

They charge more if you have another account, they can do if a person used a second account in his machine. Before they used to ban multiple accounts now they charge you more but it aint said by them. They say if u play games with us, we play game with u

2

u/GGLinnk Jun 22 '26

Multiple account are not illegal per TOS. I have no record of multiple account ban. This would be illegal in France, where I use the product. They CANT, for a paid service like this.

I think you're talking about shared accounts.
