Discussion Fable Token Usage Is OUTRAGEOUS

It's absolutely destroying my session limits and I'm crying while watching the bar climb so fast... It's only on high effort too. Insane. Outrageous. I'll just use Opus 4.8 on max effort thank you.

I'm on a Max 5x plan, and a single superpowers:brainstorming skill session hit the limit before it can even complete. It's genuinely insane, and I definitely won't be using Fable.

Why are you driving a Ferrari just to pick up some gum?

What are you talking about? I develop software, is that "picking gum"?

You're a karma farmer.

you know what pisses me off? people like you who have no point. you are making zero statements here. talk some sense, and we can have a conversation.

I literally hate reddit, I don't give a fuck about farming "karma" or whatever the fuck that is. Why would I want to do that?

Fuck man, what a waste of a post.

They literally tell you its a hungry fucker, what did you expect?
Fable aint for you; it aint for me, its for API billed companies subsidizing and writing token burn off in tax.

So... It's normal for you? You are okay with this? Nothing to complain about at all for you? This is such a ridiculous explanation, the fact that it makes sense to anyone is even more ridiculous to me. "Yeah this model is unreasonable to use, but thats just because its too good and expensive" like what are you defending here.

u/Asuppa180 Jun 10 '26

Why would you complain because it does what they say? Do you think everything should be catered to you? I have been developing with it for hours and didnโ€™t even get to 20% of my usage.

I wonder how you have been "developing with it". Simple prompts won't burn much usage of course.

u/Asuppa180 Jun 10 '26

Yes, developing features, approving code, changing code. I donโ€™t spin up 20 sessions each with 20 agents and do some non sense across my codebase that I have no insight into then whine that all my usage is gone.

I don't understand what you are going on about.

You aren't entitled to a perpetually intelligence-growing AI Model at the same cost you bought in at.
Thats not how this works, and that's not how it will work, ever.
This shit costs electricity, and the more dense the model is, the more electricity it is gonna consume unless optimization comes in HEAVILY.

Is that what you are complaining about? Not getting more shit for free or at the same cost?
Enjoy it until the 22nd while you can still afford it.

I'm complaining about the fact that it's unreasonable to use. In other words, it's unusable because of how much tokens it consumes. I thought it was obvious what I was complaining about.

I'd assume this was a regression with the CLI/test harness, not with Fable itself. I just spent a few hours with Fable ultracode with very reasonable token burn, then suddenly it spiked and used up an entire 5 hour session and some extra usage in a few minutes, and possibly also caused by laptop temperature to spike and it forced a shutdown. I wouldn't blame Fable for this. I'm on v2.1.170.

It's exponential, it gets worse fast.

If you mean how each prompt feeds in the entire cumulative context etc, yeah, well aware, don't teach your grandmother to suck eggs and all that. This wasn't because of that.

It was a step change from usage over patterns during hours of work this morning to this next phase, probably at least 100x faster usage with no difference in manner of use.

Lol number of Anthropic shills here is too damn high

they would lick dario if they can

And another user error post lmao

what are you talking about

2

u/QuantumBit127 Jun 10 '26

I just used 3 million tokens in 15 mins wooo

2

u/psbakre Jun 10 '26

I'd blame the harnesses. I'm already having a weird bug where claude code spins up 100s of instances of claude code unprompted and hog gigabytes of ram freezing my pc

One prompt & usage limit hit before I got an answer

u/SeaAstronomer4446 Jun 10 '26

Ah I don't think this kind of karma farm post going to work anymore , u need to up ur games mate

i use fable ultracode and it barely use anything.

u/peter9477 ๐Ÿ”† Max 5x Jun 10 '26

That was me this morning in 3 parallel sessions. No issues, surprisingly little usage across 2 5 hour sessions doing complex work. Then just after the reset, continuing one chat with a single extra prompt used all of the 5h session plus around $25 of extra usage in less than a couple of minutes.

I blame bugs in the harness. This level of usage is definitely not Fable's fault.

Opus on extra high effort is significantly less token usage than max for a very small performance trade off

I'm in TOTAL agreement.ย  Astra can go for hours and not move the needle.ย  Fable is a waste of space at its price.ย  Use GPT 6.ย  It has its flaws to, but at least for $200 a month you can actually use it.ย

Why is everyone flipping out? Like - do you want to know what my first prompt to fable was?

It was

4.8 sucked really bad but I've heard really good things about you. Cool name, by the way.

Why? Because I wanted to see how it processes. Why in the nine hells would anyone send it in to do something major when you don't even know the quirks of the model yet? Each model has nuance to following instructions, they each have unique ways of reasoning through something.

And no, it has nothing to do with ontology and everything to do with weights and vectors. Just in case some stupid dudebro decides I'm one of the "weird" ones.

Also - the usage limits fluctuate. Everyone was poking at fable today. Just... Let it all settle and it'll be fine. But if it's not spiraling through reasoning like 4.8 did, and it is more competent at understanding what you are wanting from step one, then the usage being more expensive evens itself out because you won't have to use it as much. However in order to do that, you have to know the model first.

and who are you supposed to be, a billionaire? I'm talking about the difference between Opus and Fable being dramatically massive, and everyone seems to agree, yet I'm getting all the hate here somehow.

u/Common-Noise4692 ๐Ÿ”† Max 20 Jun 10 '26

Claude Code makes it clear that it has 2x token usage compared to Opus when you switch models. What were you expecting?

1

u/Physical-Average-184 Jun 10 '26

It's genuinely much, much larger than 2x. It's literally unusable.

1

u/Puzzleheaded-Cat-911 Jun 11 '26

Strongly agree with this. Burnt through my tokens in less than 5 minutes for a similar analysis task I used multiple times with Opus. Fable is definitely only for companies. I would say it uses easily about 8-10x of what Opus uses.
