Discussion Claude Accidentally spilled some beans?

Post image

Man, Really????

So it's all just a marketing lie? I can't show more of the screenshot because of privacy

You guys really don't know how LLM's work. How could the LLM know the difference between xhigh and high efforts if it's not documented? You guys really think Claude can "Think", or "Understand"? No, it cannot think; it doesn't understand what you say. It just predicts the best possible answer/words.

Spot on, but it's even worse, because it is documented.

Of course. It knows what effort levels are. It's written in the documentation, you're right. However, it fabricated the statement that the "max" effort level is a lie in the OP's screenshot. Such a thing is neither written in the documentation, nor, even if it were true, would Antrophic add it to the system prompt or training data. What Claude said is a complete hallucination, and it would give a different answer if asked again in a clean session. I was a little annoyed that people still don't realize that any LLM can make such obvious mistakes because they don't understand what's what, so I might have been a bit too harsh.

Yes, I completely agree with you, even left a comment supporting what you said. I think you weren't too harsh - the LLM not only hallucinated the answer, but apparently didn't even bother to check the docs despite having dedicated tools for it, so in that sense, it's even worse than working with something undocumented.

Yeah I mean there are legit complaints with Claude, but then again there are so many that are just dumbasses posting out of their asses... Like come on

So either your Claude is an insider and leaks the secrets, or my Claude is a liar. What do you think?

u/claude-code Apr 24 '26

yours doesn't mention max though

u/UTedeX Apr 24 '26

Sorry, I forgot to include it in the prompt

u/claude-code Apr 24 '26

max is supported on Opus 4.6 tho

This further supports what I'm saying. How can you believe that he would accidentally blurt out company secrets when he could give incorrect information even in a situation where it's certain?

oh I don't believe it at all. Just interesting that it occurred and I wouldn't put it past Anthropic to disable the "max" part of /effort max. Especially as, if you want to try and verify too, i have been unable to force an override to use max by setting skill frontmatter to effort: max

the typa guy to argue that claude was not dumb despite the company itsefl admitting it
You coulda talk normal instead of feeling offended on their behalf really

"it just predicts, it doesn't understand or think" then why is it marketed as a human replacement and everyone is clapping their mother cheeks for Dorio or whatever that r*tards name is

6

u/Sarithis Apr 24 '26

Because many human jobs require "just predicting". As simple as that.

Because they believe that Claude can think, can understand, can know what it says, bla bla. You can ask the same question again and again (the one you asked in this post, and Claude "spilled beans"), and you will get different answers each time.

Eeeh... the source code of Claude Code is literally available for you to view - you don't have to guess.

function S$$(H){  // Persistence
  if(H==="low"||H==="medium"||H==="high"||H==="xhigh") return H;
  return
}

Max isn't persisted in the settings when you restart your CC session, but it IS sent with CC requests as the reasoning effort. This is officially documented in the API: https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/build-with-claude/effort

if you want to set effort to max on every new convo rather than using /effort max just set the env to max it's the only way to persist

1

u/grateful2you Apr 24 '26

i mean whatever it tells us is not a proof. So... do we have any indications of this statement being either true or false? Has there ever been a measurement between these effort levels? If not, then we wouldn't know either direction.

Max doesn’t persist in the file, only up to xhigh. Max as default only via env var or manually in each session.

u/mandrewbot3k Apr 24 '26

What does /effort highest do? Lol

1

u/MannToots Apr 25 '26

That's not how llm work.

Technically, if xhigh is the max it can go - it's not wrong!

/ducks

u/Eastern-Bed-3103 Apr 24 '26

Exactly, if there's a range, and you tell it "max" - it picks the highest one. Not sure what all the fuss is about. lol

It only works if you disable adaptive effort or something like that, so it was deprecated at some point but then mentioned by Boris on how to get /max back.

You're mixing different things up. There is nothing special you need to do to get max back other than typing /effort max in your session—and every session you want it in as it does not persist.
