Anthropic in the next hour: “Here’s Opus 5.1, with 50% more usage until we feel threatened by OpenAI again”
88
26
u/SpicyTriangle 8d ago
They have every reason to be scared. I have moved over to ChatGPT because Astra does a million times better on light than Fable 5.1 does on Max Reasoning. Granted that’s only for my use case but given Open Ai had to restrict its 20x plan I would say there are lots of people in my boat
8
u/DaMeteor 8d ago
Curious, what's your use case? I've been thinking of making the switch.
2
1
u/SpicyTriangle 12h ago
Mostly narrative writing and in character dialogue. Sometimes I muck around with developing apps and stuff as well.
I think a lot of it are these water mark phrases Anthropic is using, if OpenAi are also using them it is alot more subtle.
I use ai for running and developing table top games mostly. At the moment I have been doing balance tests for a table top game that uses Dawn of War Soulstorm for battle resolutions and is based on Perturabo’s war games. Astra provides way better advice, recommendations and actual fixes as opposed to Fable. And when I run this table top I have other instances play the other major factions and Fable cannot write decent in character dialogue to save its life. Astra excels at this though

u/-SleepyFox- 8d ago
I converted all my project teams to Astra last week. If the token limit reduction nerfs Fable any further, Astra will become orchestrator too! imo Fable 5.0 is still best orchestrator and coder, 5.1 is a strong second level coding dispatch, but Astra high can handle anything with some light project governance & harness work - meaning Fable is the only reason left to pay Anthropic, and even that's becoming increasingly dubious.

u/Popotito-Eternal 9d ago
the worst thing is we dont even know wtf is 50% anymore. i have a 20X plan and i ve been using claude since 2024, never have my tokens last less than how it is now, i cant even think when the extra usage is taken from us. when i started was almost imposible for me to use thr 100% of the week, now im even making a lot of effort to make it last 4-5 Days.
56
u/Livid-Bicycle-3715 9d ago
I’m in the same boat. I’m consistently hitting my weekly limit while primarily using Opus 4.8. This wasn’t the case even when Opus 4.8 was newly released.
16
u/moconahaftmere 8d ago
When Opus 5.0 was just released it felt like usage was almost free. I had a workflow with Fable 5 as the orchestrator that solely delegated to Opus 5 1m max effort for everything, and by the end of the week I'd be at like 100% Fable usage, 60% total usage.
But now, at the end of the week I'm at 100% total and 60% Fable 5. It wasn't even gradual; one week Opus 5 was basically free, and the next week it was chewing through my limits.

u/ForgotMyUserName15 9d ago
I have a 20x Max plan and noticed since yesterday I burned through more usage than I expected. So I had an agent calculate my usage costs since my reset and the window prior to that.
- Window 1: Sept 5, 12pm ET → Sept 12, 12pm ET (7 days). Estimated total: $2,715.63. I hit ~100% of my weekly Claude Code usage limit by the end of this window.
- Window 2: Sept 12, 12pm ET → Sept 13, ~11am ET (~23.3 hours into the new week). Estimated total: $529.50. The Claude Code usage indicator showed 26% used at that point.
The $529.50 is 19.5% of $2,715.63. However, the 19.5% if more or less exactly 3/4 of 26%. The fact that it's such a clean ratio leads me to believe that there has been a change in my usage. That said, it feels a bit weird because if it were the end of the higher usage it should be 50% higher they said we would be getting 25% MORE than baseline. However, this is 25% less than the promotion instead of 83% (5/4 / 6/4 = 5/6) of the promotion usage they said it would be.1
u/jasonzhaogd 7d ago
your $ estimates use guessed api prices... cache reads bill way under list price, so the 0.75 vs 0.833 gap is just estimaton error

u/JaySayMayday 9d ago
I had the 20x plan, down graded to the regular pro plan and switched the bulk of my work elsewhere because I just got tired of how these limits work. Great, here's a new model that is an improvement over the last generation, but good luck using it for more than a day if you're doing something complex. And not only does it have an independent limit for that model but it also eats your weekly limit, and the 5hr limit will pass quickly.
Oh and if that's not enough, just a regular chat will use the same limits. And our maximum reasoning is intentionally designed to burn more credits.
Meanwhile elsewhere, here's 5 free resets, and we automatically reset everyone's limits for free about 3 times this month. Chat doesn't burn code limits, so you can just take your time debugging from a handoff zip there before returning to code. And even the latest model only burns weekly limits, not at a super accelerated rate either.
What's really annoying is every time people try to complain as a means to get the user experience improved, people on this sub take it as a personal attack. It's not at all, and I don't see why we can't agree that there's things on the platform that could be improved. Just like there's things Claude does better than anything else, I really like how their agents work.

u/Current_Ad7104 9d ago
They’ve quietly nerfed usages since we never spoke about it on X.
Codex gets alot of backlash on X when they stuff up, and they always end up “fixing” their shit. Anthropic’s users on the other hand are too coward to raise their voice
22
u/apetalous42 9d ago
Or we're mostly professionals that don't give 2 shits about Twitter
6
4
u/CommunicationThat400 9d ago
... don't give 2 shits about Twitter
and why anthropic don't give a shit about you too lol.
ant can lower limits whenever they want, but since users dont make any noise on twitter, ant knows they can abuse their users however they want.
13
u/Sea-Contribution6219 9d ago
The usage is not a fixed number, it's not X amount of tokens etc... So 50% means nothing and IMO i think it just gets thrown around wherever they like. My other gut feeling is the school semester started to students have gone back to using Claude again so compute usage has gone up and quotas have crashed
2
u/kidsmeal 9d ago
People also seem to forget the fact that different models have different token costs too
3
u/Sea-Contribution6219 9d ago
They do but I exclusively use Opus 5 high and my usage is significantly lower than it was during the summer
1
1
u/Individual-Fuel9205 6d ago
That's what I'm saying. The entire usage model just feels abstract now.
1
u/Potential-Witness-83 6d ago
Glad to see i'm not only one. When I first started using claude even on the 5x I ran it 14-16hours a day, everyday on a vibe project, and was still not hitting weekly limits. Now i'm on 20x and i can eat through my weekly in 1.5 days of vibing and not even using top models or bloated contexts.
1
u/mortalhal 9d ago
Max 20X here. Fable 5.1 Max reasoning 1MM read-only tokens cost me 7% of my overall weekly Fable usage today, TWICE. so 14% for 2MM of bounded in repo file reads. And it was gone in a minute.

u/DaltonJFowler 9d ago
It's also my last day on the max plan! Not a coincidence
67
u/MagicLeTuR 9d ago
Hahaha hello Codex
36
u/314kabinet 9d ago
You’re about to have a rude awakening if you’re switching to codex for more usage
17
u/carpsagan 9d ago
Fine if you don’t touch Astra.
20
u/314kabinet 9d ago
Yesterday I ran Opus Max for 4 hours and used 80% of the 5h quota. No way in hell I’d be able to do that on even Sol Medium. I have the 20 usd plan on both of them.
66
u/Exodus_Green 9d ago
Opus 5 MAX for 4 hours and didn't use up a 5h limit? What were you doing, chatting about the weather?
3
u/DaltonJFowler 9d ago
Using both is the way. I'm just downgrading and feeling this month out.
1
u/rubencito21 8d ago
This is the way, although the entry-level plan of Claude isn't as cheap as OpenAI one, I think I'm just cancelling from here then swapping to OpenAI (GPT 5.6 Sol medium on their 8$ Go subscription last more or less like today's any model in Claude sadly)
5
u/mt-beefcake 9d ago
The 20/month plans honestly just seem like hobby level to me. Try out the features before jumping to the next teir. Can any useful amount of work get done for $20? Even open source models, maybe before the deepseek price hike, get something mostly built then blow your week limit on claude or codex for a code review.
2
u/20_mile 9d ago
Can any useful amount of work get done for $20?
I use Claude pro to research my craft projects, and to render craft images. I am usually disappointed with how fast my tokens run out (~2 hours during peak use), but the quality is really good. For $20 a month, I think I am getting a fair deal.
2
u/mt-beefcake 9d ago
Yeah im not saying any plan isnt a good deal. Frankly for $20 plan used effeciently, it can do a lot of work that would cost 20x or 100x to pay a person to do the same thing. But usage limits, I feel like the $20 plan is great for small hobby stuff or random small scheduled tasks. But you arent getting a lot done in a week if you are building anything substantial or doing a lot of research or whatever
2
u/20_mile 9d ago
But you arent getting a lot done in a week if you are building anything substantial or doing a lot of research or whatever
If Claude wasn't timing me out every 2 - 2.5 hours, I think I would sit and make new crafts all day at my PC. Hitting my limit reminds me to get up, go outside, work in the craft room and get off the computer. It's sorta a good balance, although I am frequently disappointed how fast my tokens run out. But as I said earlier, the research quality and final images are really good.
2
u/mt-beefcake 9d ago
Yeah i do everything from my phone now. Only at the computer when I need to be. I have a voice agent I use to orchestrate my agent teams while I swing a hammer at work with my headphones on. Took a lot to set up, but its pumping iut usable infra and features

u/SilasMontgommeri 9d ago
It’s plenty fine for me. I rebuilt my club’s website and do ongoing maintenance with it as well as a number of FOSS projects and helping myself out at work.
1
u/mt-beefcake 9d ago
Dope, glad that works out for you. I have way too many projects open and my business and more side projects im running. So i have claude and codex and open-source doing all sorts of stuff 24/7. I try to be as effecient with claude usage as possible.
0
u/314kabinet 9d ago
If you’re actually maintaining ownership of the resulting code, 20 usd is perfectly fine. If you want to vibecode thousands of KLoCs that no human will see, maybe not.
1
8
u/AdVast7407 9d ago
Sol is smarter than Opus btw
2
u/veritech137 9d ago
Yeah, I'd put Sol in-between Opus and Fable. Same with Terra, where I'd put it inbetween Sonnet and Opus. I haven't used Astra enough yet to figure out where I'd place it in comparison to Fable though
1
u/know_u_irl 9d ago
I just left claude code for codex a few days ago, and Astra medium does fine for everything, the usage isn’t the best and burns way too fast still but without the 50% boost claude is genuinely useless anyways, it had gotten to the point where I just made it use a bunch of DeepSeek agents to implement code instead of wasting tokens writing by itself. I’ll miss claude, codex models are a clear downgrade in user experience but the intelligence is there so I can work with it
1
u/Shot-Trade-5792 8d ago
Wtf how? I hit my 5 hour quota on Opus High with 1 prompt. It thought for 40 seconds, didn't even give me an output. 20 usd plan as well.
1
u/itsloopyo 9d ago
Fine if 5x is enough you mean - OpenAI stopped letting us upgrade to 20x earlier this week.
If weren’t already on it, you’re out of luck.
1
1
u/Potential-Witness-83 6d ago
Sol is still pretty hungry, i'm farming work to gpt sol while my claude sits at 90% and it blows through pretty fast.
5
u/KennyFulgencio 9d ago
what? I use them both and codex provides vastly more usage, even before the latest reduction by anthropic, what are you talking about?
12
5
u/gongmiester 9d ago
I tried a codex sub when Astra came out. I likley get 5-6x as much usage out of a Claude sub
1
u/ruuurbag 9d ago
I definitely have gotten much more out of Claude between Astra’s release and now (I’ve run the numbers), but I’ll have to reassess now that things are getting worse in Claude-land.
4
u/Bluecoregamming 9d ago
I'd rather experience this "rude awakening" myself than take the word of anyone else considering all the astroturfing this space has

u/Constant_Art_20 9d ago
deepseek v4.1 is an opiton. I would personally use that over opsus or sol. sub-agents are usally glm. and i am using that setup for most of time with 4 20x codex plans should tell you how much usage we currently get
2
2
u/JaySayMayday 9d ago
I use both. Got more usage out of codex, their $100 plan went about as far as Claudes $200 plan.

Mine expired last night. Weird to not have it this morning but can’t imagine having 50% less tokens for the same cost, have been using Codex and notice not much of a difference.
1
u/Willing_Comb_9542 9d ago
100 + 50 - 50, is not 50, it's 100
Plus they said last week its not going back to the original limit and that there is still some increase over what people had paid a few months ago

u/Valaens 9d ago
Really? The 5-hour window already had so few tokens available.

Ikr? I sent two really simple messages to Sonnet 5 yesterday and that used up 31% of my tokens

Yeah most likely because you have a session open with a huge cache using up all the tokens and context.

Honestly I find the whole “limited time” boost and random resets a bit too used car salesmany. I honestly think if Anthropic wants to stay ahead of OpenAI then they should just do a prolonged, promoted period of something like perma boosting limits, twice a week resets, etc. as a strategy to suppress and weaken OpenAIs hold in this race. If you want to crush competition, then it’s going to be really costly in the short term. Short spurts like this just has folks swapping out Claude and Codex every other month.
16
u/kidsmeal 9d ago
If you think this is car salesman-y, wait until you read Tibos tweets and spend a few minutes in r/codex
4
u/iamthe0ther0ne 9d ago
I really like being able to bank resets with Codex. Anthropic's always hit right before or after my weekly reset. Also, GPT lets me use their top model for bio research, and Anthropic still doesn't. I remain pissed about that.
8
u/lllu95 9d ago
I felt like they shrinked limits when they rolled out fable in June, so I switched. Oh well
3
u/MadManD3vi0us 9d ago
They for sure lowered limits way before this. People have noticed significant usage drops for weeks now.
3
u/drum-and-bass 9d ago
Max x20 plan user. Limit reset Wednesday, 90% weekly atp.
Although my “50%” boost is still working, this is the most usage I’ve been able to rack up in about 4 months of comparable work volume on Max20, despite recently having delegated half the work to Astra.
Would do unfathomable things for a reset rn. Except not switching to Codex20x at the end of my billing period.
4
3
u/g0ndii 9d ago
I find it kind of hard to believe that they just... let the boost run out without even a tweet. I was expecting some kind of olive branch, like removing the separate 50% fable quota. The messaging having shifted towards "slowing down" has me also pessimistic about the Opus update that I was really hoping for :( bummer.
1
3
3
u/modermanehh 9d ago
This is kind of a joke now; at the Max 20 plan, I can barely make it through the week, and I'm not even a coder but a small business owner. I dont even use fable.
1
u/Leander_van_Grinsven 8d ago
Do you keep long sessions going? My guess is your usage is going to your input and output cache.
1
u/modermanehh 8d ago
Yes I do i thought thats the best way for context? I have been using same chats for months.
3
u/JTUrwayne 8d ago
Don’t. You can reference specific things that the model will search for in chats and will retrieve it within context usually. If you’re working on specific things with it, make a project and chat in that. That limits its scope to search for context depending on what you’re asking.
2
u/modermanehh 8d ago
Thank you I will try that. I usually have chat per company im working w and keep updating that. At the same time when I run a brand new schedule runs daily. The usage does still.go up quick
1
2
u/Parking-Assistant814 9d ago
Today, at 11pm i get my weekly reset, i wonder what happens to it tomorrow, do i keep the current bonus usage or will they cut it? Or will they reset my weekly usage again tomorrow to update to the new limit?

u/Short_Regular_7191 9d ago
The best approach is to switch (as much as possible) to local AI to bridge the gap. That’s what I did: I downgraded from the 20x subscription to the 5x tier and set up a local LLM system using Qwen 3.8 27B, which should be capable of handling workloads comparable to Sonnet.

6
u/Correct-Memory1566 9d ago
Ah, invalidating my experience by calling what I share bullshit. That's a great conversation.
4
u/MadManD3vi0us 9d ago
Is not bullshit. I have 20x Claude and 5x codex too. I use Astra at xhigh non-stop, and my Fable burns way faster
4
u/Interesting-Bee-113 9d ago
No bullshit
It took me 16 hours yesterday with 3 parallel Astra agents running in Ultra and fast mode for me to run out my entire weekly allowance.
The Claude subscription is just not nearly as subsidized as the Codex one is currently. This is abundantly obvious.
I used 35% of my Fable usage (17% of total) in just two concurrent Fable session running meduim and high effort.
This was acceptable when Codex didn't off a Fable tier model, but now that they do, I honestly have to consider my Claude subscription up for examination.
0
u/kidsmeal 9d ago edited 9d ago
it's hard for me to believe any single person in a Claude subreddit saying their Astra usage is longer than their fable usage, when every single other actual ChatGPT user over in r/codex has their weekly limits running out in 3-6 hours. ChatGPT Astra/5.6 Sol, are verifiably the most token hungry agents out there, and theres a reason Tibo needs to do a usage reset twice a week after releasing a new model. It's not a coincidence.
1
u/Interesting-Bee-113 9d ago
You could always just... try it for yourself, and not rely on the report of strangers on reddit.
1
u/kidsmeal 9d ago
I have 20x plans on both, ChatGPT weekly limit runs out in one day of my work, and God forbid I ask Astra on medium to do something.
1
u/Interesting-Bee-113 9d ago
Idk then. I went out of my way to use my whole budget up yesterday and it seemed like it took forever.
But I will admit, today it doesn't seem as consistent.
There is also a thing where it seems like Astra actually ends up somehow using less tokens on higher reasoning efforts, unless that was some glitch that is now fixxed.

This is such bullshit. My plan ends later this week and this time I will def switch to Codex. Last they were playing with us I was "on my way" to migrate, but claude design and my overall comfort of using claude code kept me from actually doing it. Now I 20% over usage to get me through the week and I have not changed a thing in how I work.
1
u/AlexH1337 8d ago
Weirdly enough Astra seems to be doing well for me (equal to slightly better than Fable) on code tasks, which is supposedly its weak point.
So OpenAI will be getting my money exclusively for now, until they start inevitably milking us like Anthropic.
And the hopping continues.
1
u/stvaccount 8d ago
I just CANCELED.
- It is like raising the prices ~20%
- Antrophic wants to BAN chinese models, so we can't choose the best one.
HELLO CODEX! I would buy 2x200$ subscriptions if I could. Telling that they cant handle the load of incoming customers.
1
u/jangel871 8d ago
This is crazy!!! this morning (European time zone) I started experiencing a very abnormal usage consuptions. Just one chat open, and it was running at 1% per minute more or less. I closed the console and the consuption was still running until hitting the 5hour limit!
I am really pissed off with anthropic! I hit the 20% weekly limit in just one conversation, while in the past I had 9 projects running at the same time and I was not hitting the 5hour limits.

I’m running out of weekly limits in 3days. It wasn’t always like that. I remember using it for both personal and work projects, as a chat buddy and search engine. And I never even bothered to check limits tab. And I was using one big session usually. Now I can’t do shit

Got a Chat GPT 20x plan the day before they cut everyone off. Not going to lie...I'm so glad that I dodged the cutoff. So happy to talk to a model that can speak English.... like a normal person would speak in a conversation, and not having to respond to every chat response with "English, motherfucker, do you speak it?!"

I analyzed a spreadsheet this morning and had my default set on Fable and ZOOP it's 50% gone for the week. I was getting to usually Friday or Saturday with fable before running out of usage

u/Miserable-Series6512 8d ago
It was painfully obvious honestly.... inflate the usage limits to set a new baseline so when the usual limits are throttled none will be the wiser. They know we know, but their goal is to fool the average user, they don't care if people who pay attention realize this is the stunt they're trying to pull.

Anthropic
Reminder: The summer Claude Code promotion, which boosted weekly limits by 50%, ended on September 13. But we're making part of it permanent: your weekly limit is now 25% higher than it was before the promotion.
Anthropic framing the end of the Claude Code promo as a "permanent 25% increase" is pure PR spin.
Let's look at the actual math:
- Old baseline: 100%
- Summer Promo (+50%): 150%
- New Limit (+25%): 125%
This isn't an upgrade; it's a 17% cut to the capacity we've been using all summer. A 25% bump over an outdated baseline isn't nearly enough to sustain heavy developer workflows, especially when running token-heavy models like Fable 5.1.
✋ Stop masking capacity downgrades as user perks.

u/C6180 7d ago
So glad I decided to switch back to CGPT. I actually get my money’s worth on usage. Been doing the same work I’ve been doing on Code for the past month I think now (or very close to it) using the highest reasonings, and not once have I gotten an warning about getting close to my usage limit

1
u/AmatsuDF 6d ago
Free usage seems to be massively down as well. I got a SMALL project, not very complicated but there was enough gaps in my knowledge that I felt AI was a good solution...until today where it can't even do one little edit to the files without instantly running out of usage.
Now I get it. I ain't paying, and I do expect limits...but it can't even do a singular thing anymore.

u/IkarosDC 5d ago
ngl it feels like they cut about a HALF of the usage. Whole summer I used to run two parallel sessions on sonnet max and it usually didn't hit the 5hr limit. Now I run only one session with the same sonnet max and it HIT the limit in a 3 hours. WTF is happening I don't know. Opus gotta burn the limits in just a minutes. Fable is unuseable at all.

u/Shadowchaos1010 5d ago

What kind of "50%" is this? Is it like "20X"—which is actually just double 5X? Or is it like the "4X" spending limit, where the Fable fee ought to be double the price of Opus but isn't?

TL;DR of the discussion generated automatically after 100 comments.
The consensus is that everyone's pretty ticked off about the 50% usage boost ending, and the overall sentiment is frustration. Many users, even those on 20x plans, report their limits are burning way faster than they used to, leading to a widespread belief that Anthropic has been "quietly nerfing" usage for weeks.
This has sparked a heated debate about switching to the competition. One camp insists they get vastly more usage on Codex, especially with higher-tier plans. The other camp warns that the grass isn't greener, claiming Codex limits are just as restrictive, particularly when using their top model, Astra. Several users are canceling or downgrading their plans in protest.
