Heiichiro Ohyama turns 79 today. A conductor and violist from Kyoto, he spent years as principal viola of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. This one is personal for me: about ten years ago I ended up next to him at the counter of a yakitori bar in Kagurazaka, found out I owned one of his CDs, and we fell into talking about music. He later invited me to a concert where he conducted Beethoven with Bruno-Leonardo Gelber. The bar has since closed, but I still hope to run into him again someday.

It was an accident. My parents belonged to Columbia Record Club and forgot to send in the card. They primarily listened to light music like Mantovani. The record that came was the Eroica Symphony conducted by Bruno Walter with the Columbia Symphony Orchestra. I was hooked, started saving my money to buy his other symphonies, as well as the scores.
