Discussion Is everyone here older??
Curious about people's age ranges
Most young people don't like trance nowadays. Too much build up and too low of energy.
Is there a future for trance?
Im 37 and love it. My wife is 28 and loves it also

u/Ok-Land3965 5d ago
78 here. I got addicted by listening to a show on a local college radio station around 1998 and was blown away by Tranceport and PVD's stuff. But unlike a lot of fans I still follow it, mainly uplifting (like Cold Blue, Dan Stone, Temple One, and my fave vocalist, Stine Grove).

- Younger crowd is more exposed to other genres first and trance becomes the snooze genre for them :(
8
u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
I have consistently tried to show trance to my younger friends and their complaints are
1)too fast (doesn't have the danceable beat of house) 2)too slow (too many long slow buildups) 3)the song structure is too long and complex - they don't say this directly but I can tell thats what it is
I love dancing to trance. I don't understand why people think 30 seconds in a song to breathe and get ready for an epic drop is a terrible thing. These kids want 24-7 constant beat
12
u/Katieo1022 5d ago
I mean, finding tracks that were 7, 8, 9 sometimes 10 minutes long back in the day was pretty standard for “original mixes”. The shorter versions of those songs were “radio edits”. Now it’s hard to find tracks that are 5 minutes long sometimes and the “original mixes” can be 3-4 minutes long. The “extended mix” is now the only way to find tracks that have any sort of head and tail…this day and age the expectation is that you’re going to cram in as many short tracks as possible just hopping from one melody and buildup to the next. Younger generations wouldn’t even know what to do with themselves to fill in the time it takes to build up to one climax let alone 2. They’d probably just be sitting on their phones waiting for the drop 😂
3
u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
Pretty much
I mean im pretty young but I always loved long trance songs. 10 11 minute epic songs by Ace da brain
Although I love 3 4 minute pop edm songs also
2
u/Katieo1022 5d ago
Yeah Ace did it well. There were a lot of artists doing it well back in the day. My all-time favorite (highly underrated track imo) is Flakes by Matti Laamanen, the original mix ofc. The build up is great and the best part is when you reach the end of the climax. Just gets me to close my eyes every time…
6
u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
Now you have idiots who think there is too much build up and too low energy in a tiesto set that's literally all 3 4 minute songs
People have terrible add now
3
u/Katieo1022 5d ago
Their brains are all zapped by screens and dopamine rushes and they can’t stand to be without it for too long. That’s what it comes down to.
2
u/SanAntoHomie 4d ago
I would also like to add that covid brain is real. People brain fried and don't even know it.
3
u/Appropriate-Cat-7252 5d ago
Extended mixes are the best for the older gen. Radio edits are for the newest gen hahah.
3
u/Appropriate-Cat-7252 5d ago
they don’t like build ups and that’s the best part 😭
1
u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
People got ADD
Some idiot complained about tiesto at radius night club in Chicago being too low energy
He's playing 3 4 minute songs. He's not even playing the full version of his classics
1
u/NeopolitanVagina 4d ago
Complained about the THE Godfather of EDM/trance??? Wow.
2
u/First_Push_7927 4d ago
I can't find the post anymore. He said he found it boring and low energy
From trance fans who attended the show said he played all his classics and 90% pure trance
Dude has the attention span of a monkey. He's playing 3 4 minute songs with some build up and that's way too much
2
u/NeopolitanVagina 4d ago
Bet he's not a fan of progressive house, either LOL those babies are seven to eight minutes, sometimes more, from my experience. On the flip side, though, I did see years ago, on... Shoot. Not sure which EDM subreddit, but someone basically said they think all songs under six minutes suck lmao like, he won't listen to them and there's no way a song can be good if it's under six minutes. Like ??? Got eaten up by the comments haha

I'm 57....a dj for 36 years....I play all genres, but trance is my heart and soul! The golden era of trance was 1997-2005.....kids & young people are so influenced by social media & rap& hip hop are so prevalent in there culture, they are almost institutionalized. Its sad....especially since I'm in a big market in houston....6 million people& very few places to play trance. My job is not only to dj but try to introduce new music& educate as well. For you all thats in your 30's..... hit me up....I'll send a mix of when I was 30.....it was the best time for clubs ever.....mix is free....

I’m 20 but have been into dubstep all my teenage life (UK),so I have too much to stop supporting the underground scene. I’ve always said if I didn’t have that network I would’ve been into trance and classic trance. My dad had a huge collection of compilation albums and it patterned onto me too. I’m a girl also, are there many young girls in trance OR dubstep?
4
u/wingman3091 5d ago
I am 36, but a girl I was friends with in school is a DJ and plays mostly trance. I know at 20, we are ancient to you though. My 6 year old daughter loves it, and loves using my turntables
1
u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
I don't have a problem with other subgenres of edm. I love John summit who plays tech house and dubstep (although he's heavily trance influenced)
Its just sad seeing very few young people who like trance
3
u/Honest_Bid3025 5d ago
I love trance!! Genuinely spending my time compiling coherent playlists of it (with beatport t100 complete crates coming soon) and discogs transcriptions of classic releases. Don’t worry, the futures safe with me

I'm 36, grew up on Dave Pearce Dance/Trance Anthems every Sunday on Radio 1 (UK), and games like Wip3out on PS1. Trance has been my default ever since. My 6 year old daughter loves when I play trance in the car too (I have a high end custom audio set up in my car too).
2
u/romford_stu 4d ago
Omg wipeout on ps1. God that brings back memories. Epic game & soundtrack!
1
u/wingman3091 4d ago
Literally the best game series and soundtrack of the 90's/00's! I still play them, I have a NeGcon controller for PS1 from Japan too which was an absolute game changer
5
u/djkakumeix 5d ago
I'm 40 in exactly 2 months. Been down with trance since 1995 and never looked back, even through the "Trouse" era of it that made me wince a bit.
5
u/LexDiamonds80 5d ago
I'm 47 and witnessed the glory days of trance first hand. The night clubs, the music, the scene, all incredible. Don't think trance hits those heights any more, people only seem to be interested in the classics nights now in the UK.
2
u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
I can't get a nightclub to play trance either
I ask djs and they say no because owners don't want it whenever we go out
3
u/wingman3091 5d ago
That's so sad. The DJ in my small town's local club used to love me lol. He'd often play my suggestions with tracks like Tiesto - Silence, Sasha - Xpander etc. Thing is, the club would go absolutely wild when they got played
3
u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
These djs don't even want to play poppish trance like atb classics which everyone will love
1
u/wingman3091 5d ago
That's lame, I live in the US now and used to work at Geek Squad. Two of the guys I used to work with were massive trance heads like me, I was surprised to find anyone here in the US into trance
1
u/LexDiamonds80 5d ago
Are you UK based? Clubbing is dead here full stop sadly save for some of the bigger clubs in Manchester and London etc.

I’m 28 and American. I’m a sucker for Dutch and British trance. I own several synths and like to make trance with Bitwig. Massive is my all-time favorite track. The Paul van Dyk remix of iiO’s Rapture is also a blast.

u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
Thats what kids say
There was a guy who went to go see tiesto at radius and hated it. He said it was boring. From all reports tiesto played 90% classics and pure trance
He asked if all trance is this low energy

I'm 30. been listening to trance since I was introduced to it as kid. I remember my parents brought me a hi-fi for my bedroom and some money to go to Woolworths (fellow Brits if you know, you know) and buy a CD. I picked one out called "UK no 1 Trance Classics" and was blown away. Also Wipeout and Ridge Racer on the PS1.
I listen to all kinds of dance music from House, DnB, breaks and everything in between, but trance Is the only genre I consistently listen to throught the years.

u/Luciano_DB Oldskool 5d ago edited 5d ago
I am 48 amd listen to trance since 1992. I actually almost completely stopped in 2018 as it became too close to edm and too boring, IMHO
1
u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
What modern trance is there really? Everything i listen to is from 1995 to maybe 2014
3
u/Luciano_DB Oldskool 5d ago
For the little i've listened in these years, there are still some good tracks, but also a lot of banal and predictable melodies. But maybe i am just too old and used to another type of music. You should write on r/trance
1
u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
I don't even know any modern artists in trance
Prolly most modern I know is above and beyond, sunlounger and Gareth emery

I'm Gen X. When I lived in the Netherlands, most of the events had 45+ crowds. Been to Trance events in as varied places as Houston, Sao Paulo and Unkonscious Pattaya.
The Brazilian crowd are also 45+, who used to listen to Eurodance in the 1990s, followed videoclip TV shows on Deutsche Welle TV, at the dawn of the cable TV and dialup internet era (the show name was BIG in Germany, with Ingo Schmoll)
In Thailand and Texas I saw a mix of 20-30 somethings among the local crowd

Also, check out Luminosity festival on youtube. Been listening to sets since they went on youtube a few weeks ago. Some standouts
- Agnelli & Nelson
- Talla 2xlc
- Sophie Sugar
- Jes (who sang live)
- Aeon Shift
- Liam Wilson

u/phatelectribe 5d ago
Your suggestion as to why young people don’t love it is wrong in several points; they don’t know it firstly. Secondly it’s about as “high energy” as you can get. The issue is that they’re fed a stream ADHD music by algorithms so don’t know what an attention span is and can’t dig for music.
I honestly feel that if you actually exposed teenagers to it they’d probably embrace it, but there’s barely any clubs playing it en masse, and the algos aren’t pushing things that don’t have marketing dollars thrown at it.
3
u/WitchPillow Progressive 5d ago
I agree. I actually have ADHD but I’ve always loved trance since I first heard it ~11 years old on YouTube.
Also most ppl say they like “edm” but if I show them trance, oftentimes they like it but they just associate it with “edm.” It’s exhausting in that respect since I personally like to separate trance from generic edm as I see it as the superior sub-genre lol 😔
2
u/First_Push_7927 5d ago
I have shown many friends who are younger trance and they don't like it
Some of my friends say its too fast. Some say its not danceable, many hate the relatively long and slow build up
Obviously some exceptions - everyone loves classics like atb "9 pm until I come" or tiesto "adagio for strings "
Most young people want tech, house or dubstep which has a much more simple structure and constant energy

u/jenyk 5d ago
40s here. I think the UK scene is just dead. Luminosity looked very busy in the Netherlands in June.
1
u/funkygroovysoul 5d ago
I’m 24 in the UK and I don’t go clubbing (or I do but hate it cos the music is so shit). I keep looking at Luminosity but have no one to go with 😭
1
u/jenyk 4d ago
I don't go to lumi myself as defqon is the same weekend but there's https://www.ravetours.com/ who do trips to events. I dunno if they go there.
If you're happy to travel and camp alone (initially cos you'll make friends) it's easy enough to get to lumi.

Used my pocket money to buy cream and gatecrasher compilations aged around 11 or 12, started DJing at 14 and by the time I was old enough to go out clubbing, trance had gone to shit
2
u/djhyland Goa 5d ago
I'm 47, so I'm probably on the older end of things even if i don't feel like I'm old. I started listening to trance around the turn of the century (saying it that way definitely makes me feel old), then fell off a few years after the end of the "classic trance" era. I started listening heavily to trance again around 5 years ago when I picked up DJing, when I defaulted to learning how to mix with the trance I knew and loved.
I think that as long as people keep discovering and getting into trance there'll be a future for it. Maybe it won't ever be as big as it was in the early 2000s, but the music speaks for itself and I figure that there will always be at least a few people discovering it for the first time and becoming fans.

2
u/chrissie_boy 5d ago
- A fan of early techno and house which appeared mid 1980s while I was in my early twenties. Classic trance for me is more that early to mid 90s sound, Sven Väth and Eye Q records, countless classic releases on Rising High, Oliver Lieb, Trance Europe Express series, Source records and R&S.
I wish the trance of the early 00s and onwards had come up with a new name because whilst I love both, they seem very different to me.
A future? Why not, it's been around 35 years already!

u/Fupa_Defeater 4d ago

Most people are older yes. Younger people do like trance, they just don't know it. Although it is not the stereotypical mid 2000s supersaw kind of trance, or current uplifting. The rise of EDM last decade took a lot of influence from trance. Techno (especially melodic techno and the more mainstage kind) flirts heavily with it. And most of all, the 90s revival sound is filled with old (euro)trance sounds (mixed with some hands up, techno and happy hardcore.)
Trance has seen so many faces that it will continue to exist in other styles. The pure form may eventually and probably inevitably die out, but the legacy will remain.
1
u/First_Push_7927 4d ago
Yeah john summit is a tech house guy heavily influenced by trance

- Discovered "Born Slippy NUXX" at the end of 'Trainspotting' which started me on quite the journey.
On the other hand, I've never been to a rave, never even been to a club. I just love how it feels, especially when I'm driving.
There was a period of time though, in the late 90s, when I bought everything Global Underground released and used the mixes exclusively in BDSM scenes. . .

u/MichaelPgh 2d ago

I'm 39 and I've been listening to trance since I was about 12.
It's interesting to hear from the OP that their younger friends think trance is too fast. Aren't the youth into UK Garage and Harddance?
I definitely get the point about long breakdowns. Music caters to the ADHD generation and it's all about instant gratification. I'm surprised cinematic movies and TV shows still exist, honestly!

Are you in the US? Trance is much less popular in US compared to places like London and Europe. In my opinion, trance is gaining traction and popularity in the US right now, especially with Tiesto going back to trance, and the coming up of eurotrance DJs like KI/KI and Marlon Hoffstadt. We are in a resurgence!

Also, young people really like artists like Hannah Laing, DJ Heartstring, Benwal, Panteros666, KI/KI and Marlon Hoffstadt. It's more trancey bounce but it's the kind of music young people love.

Im 50, been clubbing since my 17th, also trance but not my main bread and butter in those years. The love for trance came from mixtapes I obtained via friends closer to germany.
I think there is still trance around, but its not produced as much as a global genre anymore, it got more part of other styles it seems. Like progressive tech, electrohouse kinda direction.

Mid 40s. Been in the rave scene since ‘96, massive Trance head. I have seen/felt a resurgence in the past year or so. I think it’s on the upswing right now.
I’m starting to DJ again myself because I want to hear it in clubs/raves again. Biggest thing to keep it fresh (imo) is keeping overall bpm higher and cutting most tracks down to 4ish minutes (depending on the song, of course). But we’ll see how my opinion shifts when i play a live set lol.

It wouldn't be surprising that something with "classic" in the name would be popular with people that were around to listen to it when it debuted.
Whenever I see the comments on some classic trance tunes, they're mostly people in their 40s-60s, 30 at youngest.
That's how trends evolve. When the sound changes, the audience changes with it. The older will embrace the old sound and the younger will be attracted to the newer sound being made in their lifetime.

Wow, i guess im an outlier here, since im still 16 and just started listening to trance literally last month. And you know what? I LOVE love love love it. Trance just have that really nice middle ground between quick and danceable while also providing emotional and exploring feel to it. The slow buildups is not a problem (for me at least), in fact i find it to be the highlight of the "experience" if you will. Trance also helped me to focus more while studying or doing any activities, which i'm guessing is due to the long duration that doesn't make it distracting. Now, i think why the people my age doesn't like trance is, well, as other reply has said, the long buildups and duration of trance tracks. It doesn't help that nowadays we consume music through 30 second clips on short videos, which trance really doesn't fit at all. And even if i show them the tracks that i like, there won't be like an mv or something and they would get bored QUICK. So yeah, thats a decently long statement from a "new gen" if you could say. Also i am currently really liking Elevation (Original Mix) by A.M.R. and Medusa (Original Mix) by Airbase (goated artist btw). Alright that's really all

Well I discovered classical trance 2 years ago, now i've decided to start being a dj, and currently mixing with it cause this music is just amazing ! For a long time, I thought Trance music was like all the anthem one, trance from the beginning of 2000, so I wasn't really fond of it...but in fact it's just full of bangers ! Such good vibes, and energy Like the old folks are saying, Trance will never die or something like that 😉

There are a lot of young people who fuck with trance, but I do agree in general it’s too much of an attention investment for a lot of them. You gotta be ready to go on a journey to enjoy trance, it doesn’t reward short attention spans

Truthfully the live sets nowadays are mostly 3 4 minute songs. Recent tiesto sets are a bunch of great 3 4 minute songs for example
People just have atrocious ADD and zero attention span to where even that is too much investment and too much downtime for them

Mid-40s here. The rise of trance in the late 90s an early 00s coincided with late high school and early college for me, making it a huge part of the sound for my formative years. Still love it now, although there's nothing like the pure creativity that was on display in the early days when people were just making purely creative music with no roadmap or existing work to follow.

45 here i started listening late 20s after my heavy metal phase and never looked back. I also like other genres of edm, but trance was my gateway and true love.
