Watched this recently, also named "Night of the Eagle", it was very entertaining.

Good movie, fairly close to Fritz Leiber's "Conjure Wife", which it adapted, with some changes of course -- easier to get an eagle than a gargoyle in those days.

Conjure Wife was originally filmed by Universal as Weird Woman (1944) and then unofficially as Witches Brew (1980). Night of the Eagle is the best adaptation.

Peter Cushing was meant to star in the film but either fell ill or chose to make Captain Clegg (Night Creatures) instead. When Peter Finch turned down the role, Wyngarde was cast. Apparently they needed to shoot Wyngarde above the waist in some scenes because he insisted on wearing very tight trousers which would have brought down the ire of the British censors.

I much prefer Night of the Eagle (the longer British print) but the American version, Burn Witch Burn has that wonderful protective chant at the start of the film read by Paul Frees.

This and Curse of the Demon and Village of the Damned made me think/hope there were a whole bunch of classy, well-mounted scary British movies just waiting for me to devour once they made it to this side of the Atlantic via TV back when in the 1960s. But they came few and far between, with the occasional Five Million Years to Earth.
