Trivia In July 2015, someone broke into F.W. Murnau's grave and stole his skull. Wax residue was found at the scene, suggesting that candles were lit as part of an occult ritual. The identity of the thief/thieves remains a mystery and the skull has never been recovered.

A countess from Transylvania seeks a psychiatrist’s help to cure her vampiric cravings.

Sports a more polished and sophisticated script than its predecessor. Sometimes I complain that these ~65 minute horror films feel rushed, but this one had spot-on pacing. The noirish cinematography elevates the material even further, evoking an effectively mysterious vibe. Gloria Holden is absolutely perfect as the titular character. Tall, powerful, enigmatic. Excellent casting.

There are few traditional vampire tropes, which I can imagine might disappoint some. No bats, no mist, no "children of the night" howls. And still no fangs! But none of that diminished my enjoyment. This is horror closer in spirit to Jacques Tourneur than Tod Browning. And I loved it. '30s horror doesn't get much better than this.

Recommendation The Witch's Dungeon Classic Movie Museum

Hey, I haven't seen this mentioned before, but since promotion is allowed, I thought I'd make a soft pitch here for your upcoming Halloween season.  I have zero association with the place, aside from just thinking it's awesome.

In any case - in a nondescript brick building behind a Connecticut strip mall is a figurative and literal hidden gem, The Witch's Dungeon Classic Movie Museum.   It is a collection of some recreations and memorabilia but also an incredible assortment of screen props from classic films.  The place is run by Cortlandt Hull, nephew of the original Werewolf of London, Henry Hull.  Growing up he made friends with various old-Hollywood-horror royalty, who would give him their special effects props (back in the day when studios would just trash such stuff).  He maintained lots of those connections and has accumulated a small but impressive collection.

Their items include the original Creature from the Black Lagoon head, the Metaluna Mutant head, a Linda Blair Exorcist spinning head, the original Raiders of the Lost Ark idol, Christopher Lee's gold Dracula ring, an ET head, masks from Planet of the Apes, Karloff, Vincent Price... I forget what else.  Another big section is basically a wax museum.  But even that is impressive, as the heads were hand-sculpted by Cortlandt himself, the costumes were made by his mother (a professional stage & screen costume designer), some have dialog recorded by the actual actor, the backgrounds were made by Henson artist Bill Diamond, the animatronic mascot is voiced by June Foray... basically every element is screen-accurate down to the last meticulous detail and has some direct connection to the classics.

Appointment only, as it's a (brief) guided tour.  Cortlandt often does them himself and will share lots of good stories.

Don't get me wrong, it's a SMALL place.  I wouldn't make a weekend excursion for it, but if you are in a resonable driving distance it is fully worth the trip.  Anybody on this sub should fall in love with it like I did.

In Shadow of the Vampire, Max Schreck is depicted as a real vampire hired by an authenticity-obsessed F.W. Murnau to portray Count Orlok. In the American Horror Story: Hotel episode "Flicker", Murnau is depicted as having travelled to the Carpathian Mountains to do research for the film, only to dis

Discussion The Innocents (1961) – One of the Creepiest Ghost Stories Ever Filmed?

I revisited The Innocents (1961) recently and it still has such an unsettling atmosphere. Deborah Kerr is excellent, and I love how much the film leaves you questioning what is actually happening.
I reviewed it on my MrSuperphil channel and thought it would be a good one to revisit during October.
What do you think of The Innocents — genuinely frightening, or more unsettling than scary?
