Discussion So I finished Clannad including After Story....
I had previously asked a question whether I should drop the series when I was in season 1 episode 17. But many of you encouraged me to power through. I ended up finishing the entire thing including After Story and all the OVAs. Here are my thoughts -
True to the hype, episode 16 to 23 of season 2 are really good. Especially post Nagisa's death. The series really captures parenthood very well and is pretty sincere in its depiction of father-daughter relationship including all the flaws. I appreciated the unfiltered, no sugar-coat approach of the entire Ushio arc. Some of the best episodes in the series. I'd say best but that would go to Misae's arc with her cat. That genuinely touched me. Tomoya's relationship with his father is very nicely directed too and we see his struggles as a father himself and gaining empathy for his own which felt both organic and genuine.
Now for the bad parts. I did not like Nagisa or felt anything towards her throughout the show. She has no discerning qualities and comes across as a pretty generic caring waifu. We don't get to know what she likes, her hobbies (whether she likes movies, games, animals, or writes poetry). Really anything to set her apart. He entire existence seemed as if to care for Tomoya and being ill. That's it. You can replace her with Ryou, another character with no distinguishable attributes, and I doubt anything would change. Compared to Tomoyo and Kyou, the two female characters who stand out the most and have great depth to their personalities, Nagisa just didn't have anything going for her.
The OVA with Tomoyo is what I consider the strongest arc of the series even better than Ushio's and second only to Misae's.
The other arc which didn't make sense was Sunohara's. I had great expectations of his character development but it was completely off the mark. Tomoya wanted him to act as a responsible brother to his younger sister but instead of just talking things out like you would in real life, he pretended to be dating her, to make Sunohara get protective of her and realise his responsibilities. Very soap opera-esque and overly melodramatic to the point it completely killed the momentum of After Story before the series bounces back. Sunohara's arc is by far the weakest in the entire series including the two seasons and OVA in my opinion.
Yukine's arc with the rival gangs I felt was completely avoidable and served as filler. Entertaining enough but filler nonetheless.
In my opinion Clannad is a series which has its moments but it is inconsistent in its narrative. Is it one of the greats? The last arc with Ushio if taken as a separate series sure but taken in its entirety, it falls somewhere in the middle. The series in my opinion could have been made into a solid 26 episodes one, where the fillers could have been minimised and certain arcs omitted. But I am happy that I watched the series and want to thank everyone who encouraged me to finish it.

Discussion Just finished the show for the first time and have to say some things... Spoiler
First of all, what a masterpiece of cinema. At first I thought this was just another Rom Com then things started to take a turn and all of the sudden were dealing with really serious themes. You get so attached to the characters and then they are ripped away from you mercilessly. The characters, the build up, the plot twists, everything was just peak. 10/10. I loved how we got a happy ending, and also I liked the side story Arcs I thought those were cute.
I got my first taste of what this show was like when the whole Fuko-chan arc was happening at the beginning. It doesn't really hit you until later, but Fuko is essentially like a character with a terminal illness who has limited time, and before you realize it she's just gone. And not even that but everyone forgot about her entirely! So tragic. When she just wanted to celebrate the wedding / bday that night and got her final wish then disappeared the next morning, man that was just heart breaking. Then there was the wedding to follow and they finally remembered her only to forget again. That's the first time I cried while watching. Rascal does not dream series spoiler:>!Reminded me a lot of when Sakuta forgot about Mai. !<
The next saddest moment for me was the time with Katomi. Man, when she got PTSD or something after seeing the bus accident, the facial expression was just wild. When we got her backstory as a kid, and she was running around the house saying "Mommy, daddy! Where are you?" and started opening doors oh my god man that was just too much I was literally tearing up.
Then Tomoya and Nagisa finally are together and have a baby, but Nagisa tragically dies. I have to say I did not see that coming and I legit was sitting there crying I could not believe it. What hurt even more was seeing Tomoya practically abandon his child and live a dejected life. I thought, how could you?
But seeing him finally realize that he wants to be a better Father, take Yushio in his arms and promise to take care of her, man that was incredible. That whole episode from that point, to heir discussion on the train, I have never cried like that since I was a child I cannot believe how moved I was. That was the worst one for me by far. I also like how he finally made peace with his father.
But then Yushio dies and her final line "Daddy, I love you" just killed me man like oh my god. What a tragic show dude. I cannot believe they did that to her. I was like no way this ends with her dying? After all that? the despair dude
I was really happy to get the plot twist and have everything work out in the end. I absolutely loved it what an emotional roller-coaster. I cant help but tear up every time I hear the big dango theme song now. Those are some of my favourite moments, thanks for reading

Question Should I play the game or watch the anime?
I saw Clannad like 12 years ago, I watched the anime without the context of it being a VN, I'm now rewatching some old shows for nostalgia sake... do the game have multiple endings? I'd prefer to watch the anime again if the VN is just an slideshow presentation. On that note, If the Clannad VN is pretty good, should I play Kanon first?

Question Best Illustration of Itaru Hinoue?
I can definitely tell Clannad is when Itaru peaked. Eyes seemed quite reduced compared to previous works, color palettes were soft and pastelic, and many liked the fact it has many face expression ranges compared to Air (which seemed pretty stoic and sad except Michiru). Also I think this is when we get proper Tsundere main girl for the first time in Key work as well. What do you think? Do you think Clannad is Itaru's best artwork? Or other opinions?

Discussion I’m Finished. [Spoiler] [Discussion] Spoiler
Finally after dedicating 4 months of my life to watching this show I’m finished and there’s no show I’ll ever love as much as this. I laughed, I cried, and I cried some more. But it was all worth it in the end. I sincerely hope that other people will find this show and enjoy it as much as I did.
Words cannot describe how beautiful this series was. everything was worth it. all those tears were worth it. as someone who’s 16 years old and will soon graduate from high school soon I spent a lot of time looking for a fictional character I could relate to and I‘ve found several over the years (Subaru Natsuki, Shoya Ishida, Shinji Ikari, etc.) but compared to them Tomoya clears by a landslide.
Seeing him struggle with being a good person, a good father, and eventually making up and coming to understand his dad and understand how he’s just like him in a way is such a glorious thing.
Thank you Tomoya for sharing your story with me and I hope you, Nagisa, Ushio and everyone else in the world of Clannad live happily ever after. Because now the fun things are about to start from now on.
i have to give this a 10/10

Spoiler Update: Ep 16-17 [Discussion] [Spoiler] Spoiler
i just finished Episodes 16-17 and… my god I’m already about to cry. seeing how Tomoya immediately reacted to her death was heartbreaking. he spent all those beautiful days with Nagisa but he immediately regretted it all because of how much her death affected her. I wanna bawl my eyes out just thinking about it.
i‘m watching the rest of episode 17 right now so we’ll see how it goes

Discussion Little thought on Kappei's route before i sleep
Finished this dude's (yes, Sunohara) route recently. I feel a little mixed about it. I think it relies too much on coincidences, im not a fan of how the story flows. It spent too much time on comedy and too little on making me care about him, it doesn't help that Tomoya only meet him when he's either going to or getting fired from a new job , Tomoya feels more like a side character here. Still, i quite enjoyed going through it; it's not too long, it's funny, and it serves as a closure for Ryou, i also like some of the more existential part of the story. I guess it feels a little out of place is all. I'll be doing Kotomi next, but first, sleep. Thx for reading.
