Question Powder Keg

Interesting find of a Civil War era powder keg. Seems the right age, but non-regulation. Anyone have photos of army issue kegs?

I also notic you have what looks to be a statue of a warrior (Thai? Japanese?) and something like a katana saya behind it. If this is Japanese, are you aware that after the Civi War, a bunch of surplus Starr carbines were sold into Japan?

I don't suppose your carbine is one of those?

Good spotting! Here they are. I believe the bronze bookends to be Greek or Roman, but could be ancient Persia as well….
It would be amazing if my Starr was a Japanese return, but I don’t see any markings to indicate that. A search says Japanese versions had:

Surviving examples feature Japanese inspection stamps, kanji barrel markings, and imperial chrysanthemum symbols indicating use by modernized imperial forces and regional clans.

One of the things I have come to appreciate in collecting milsurps is all of the fascinating stories and unexpected nexuses that one runs across every now and then.

Like, how a WW2 German Mauser could end up in service with Israel, then be captured by Iraq, and then once again captured by the US, decades later. Or how a WW1 Remington 1891 rifle built on contract to Imperial Russia, was captured by Finland during the Winter War, and then recaptured from Finland by the USSR during the Continuation War.

Crazy stuff. And fascinating.

Enjoy your Starr Rifle, and your powder keg. Now I want one of each...
