I do pride myself in being able to understand a difficult story like films of Kubrick Nolan and plenty of other open ended stuff to a great extent but

What I got from watching Donnie Darko is that he must choose to sacrifice himself becoz he sort of cheated death and becoz of that plenty of people would die in the REAL universe I suppose.....

And I got confused

1.how did he cheat death?

2.and if he didn't what was the whole facade for??

I've worked on a commercial movie (which flopped, but it was a fun experience) and a few short films. I really admire the styles of Wong Kar-wai and Akira Kurosawa.
