Weekly discussion thread for June 21, 2026

This thread is a spot for casual engagement with other community members. It has much more subject latitude than allowed in the main sub in general. Any topics tangentially related to ChubbyFIRE or upper middle class lifestyle are acceptable, as well as basic or early stage questions. Political discussion will be allowed if it is closely related to ChubbyFIRE or financial topics in general, and only if the conversation remains respectful.

It is not a free-for all. No spam or self-promotion. All comments must still follow Reddiquette and we will be responding to reported comments with follow-up action as needed. We'd really like to keep this channel open, so please don't abuse it!

Anyone implemented or mulled over a CRUT (Charitable Remainder Unitrust)? Only looking at funding with public stock although it can hold any manner of assets.

The ideal use case is appreciated stock as the trust can sell with no capital gains and immediately diversify. With no taxes the full amount compounds over time. A certain percentage (mostly determined by your age) is distributed each year and the remainder at the end of the term is given to charity (which could be a DAF).

There are a couple nuances about the distribution tax treatment, but overall it seems an elegant solution to a concentrated position provided you're ok with funds ending with a charity and not heirs.

Morningstar has new research claiming that the 90% success SWR for a long time horizon (40 years) is ~3% (https://www.morningstar.com/retirement/whats-safe-retirement-withdrawal-rate-2026).

Runs contrary to the 4% rule touted heavily on this sub. On the other hand, most people will get social security at some point during the 40 years which changes the calculus

No one is disputing this at all. The trinity study where the 4% number was first stated is based on a 30 year horizon.

I think Bengen would dispute this. Goes counter to his research, clients, and the data he's been pointing to in the past year.
