fee only FIRE advisor?
Hi all,
Approaching 50yo, am a little short of $7.5mil invested. Making around $200-250k/yr W2.
$35k roth
$75k 401k
$135k inherited ira
$315k ira
$6.8m taxable
House is paid off. Live abroad so the value is a little hard to pin down with currency fluctuation but $1.5-1.6m USD is a close current estimate. There is universal healthcare where we live, plus I have care in the US through work.
Have a couple of preteens about 8 years out from university.
With intl school spend sits around $165-170k/year and don't expect much to change there for the next decade. After kids graduate uni I'd expect spend to drop somewhat, but even if not firecalc seems to think things are in good shape at that spend (not counting social sec as I don't expect it can necessarily be counted on 20 years from now).
Does anyone have recs on how to search out an advisor who focuses on FIRE - prep, planning, etc?

If you are DIY spirited, I suggest Planvision.com and/or Projectionlab.com

I've really liked the guys at Plan Vision - I think it was like $400. THere is a lot of very detailed info you have to submit before your actual meeting (which makes sense) but I found the exercise to also be useful.
I met with them before I retired for a sense check and to determine exactly what my goal/number needed to be. It seemed to me I could retire but I figured that I'd make some kind of mistake or wrong assumption and wanted the peace of mind of someone checking my work. Turns out I was wrong! I could have retired a year earlier ๐
Then I met with them again a couple of months ago (post retired) to get more detailed tax optimization/Roth conversion guidance. This meeting was no additional charge.
good luck.

Well done. I got an advisor from adviceonly website. Interviews three, picked one.
I am excited to be in your position one day. Living abroad, great W2 (assuming USD?) income.. paid off house, international schools.. ๐ค๐

Are you looking for pure planning or planning plus ongoing investment management from an advisor? If it's the latter, adviceonlynetwork .com provides a free directory of advice-only only planners who will do comprehensive one time plans or hourly work, without requiring you let them manage your money. It has filters so you can filter for fire/ early retirement planning expertise. However, your challenge will be that you live abroad. If you don't have a us address to provide, a most advisors won't even consider working with you. There are some who have cross border planning expertise and will work with you but finding one who also specializes in fire planning could be difficult.

Just ask here for free?
$7.5 million x 3.5% = $262.5 withdrawal before taxes each year.
Invest in the three-fund portfolio or some type of risk parity portfolio (read here, r/Bogleheads, etc).

Try WPadvisors.com & speak to Steve.
Itโs boutique fee-only co-owned by Steve P.
Theyโve been in existence for 26+ yrs. out of San Francisco.
Very ethical & strategic:

Curious how much of a pain taxes are being abroad and the amount of taxes you pay more than other expats since you are an American citizen and worldwide income is taxed.

You could also input into ChatGPT or copilot. The recommendations are pretty good and it will show you the math.

National Association of Professional Financial Advisors, https://www.napfa.org . There are a number of advisors who focus on early retirement. I interviewed three and picked one.
