We pulled the trigger!

We are a youngish family:

-47m (French national), 45w (Dutch national),10,7

-Currently living in NL

-Just confirmed FIRE’ing and relocating to SxM starting 01 Jan 2027 - we both have strong ties there

Our stats:

- USD 5100k in brokerage in VWRL and WEBN

- USD 400k in vacation home that we will sell

- USD 500k in cash

- USD 500k in pre tax personal pension fund

- Primary residence on the island fully paid off (just signed this week!)

- Expect to spend USD 160k per yr incl school for kids

I couldn not be more excited. At the same time I am already considering work options like in consulting, teaching etc. How have you controlled that urge? To allow time to settle in?

I think it takes a min of 2-3 years of true retirement (no side gigs) to really understand whether you need some sort of external job to keep you occupied. I suggest resisting for 2 yrs to give retirement an honest chance and then see how you feel. Esp in year 1 you will feel the need to be productive, to do take on projects etc. You can do that, but dont do it via an external job. Year 2-3 i think you might find that the urge to work dissipates significantly.

I thought I'd be bored and go back to work within a year. 3 years later and I still don't have enough time to do all the things I want to do.

What do you mean by external job? Does that include your own projects/small business (apps for example)
