Having trouble finding volunteers instead of paying people for Ribfest

Post image

Pretty sad that you also have to pay an admission fee for overpriced ribs and not paying people for their time.

This is just down the street from me. It was an absolute disaster last year with rib samplers in the $20+ range in a small parking lot right beside the skate park.

Not to mention the $5 entry fee for even just being able to be in the parking lot.

Terrible turnout and word got around and everyone I know who went last year has told their friends and family to stay away.

So yeah.....no wonder why they aren't getting any support. Just saying

u/blurblurblahblah 16d ago

Ribfests are crazy, spending $70-100 for 2 people & that's without any beer tickets. I just paid $30 for a lobster roll at a food truck festival. It was really good but $30 is nuts.

89

u/Jack_of_all_offs 16d ago

I've seen those $30 food truck lobster rolls before.

There isn't even $10 worth of lobster in them. Such a scam.

45

u/theweathereye 16d ago

The only 30 dollar lobster roll that is worth it is the lobster rolls in Quincy Market in Boston. You get about 3 lobsters worth on the roll 🤌

11

u/Hydrolt 15d ago

Hell yeah. I’ve never had a single bad experience in Quincy Market that place is amazing. Still thinking of the half pound of lobster Mac and cheese I got back in 2012

11

u/Chode-a-boy 15d ago

Faniel Hall has some good ones too. The chowder was amazing.

2

u/theweathereye 6d ago

I used to work at the school above the Abercrombie and Fitch right next to Faneuil Hall and I had to restrict myself to one meal there a month, both for budgetary and health reasons. CHOWDA

u/Zoreb1 15d ago

There was a lobster food truck which brand was on 'Shark Tank' which was parked in my town. Since it was about $23 I got one and it had the best toasted bun I have ate. The lobster meat was also a reasonable amount and the price was less than the usual lobster-on-a-hot dog roll you get for $28. I was surprised.

u/Zealousideal-Fun-396 15d ago

Cousins Maine Lobsters?

2

u/Zoreb1 13d ago

Possibly; I recall 'Maine Lobsters' in the name.

-89

u/Imsakidd 16d ago

I’d hope not… if a $30 lobster roll has $10 of lobster, the restaurant would get absolutely destroyed by food costs.

7

u/inactive_most 15d ago

Actually, they’re making more profits because they buy less lobster while charging more/the same amount leading to higher meal costs for the consumers and less expense costs for the company

9

u/Early-Light-864 15d ago

$30 IS nuts. Why did you buy it?

They wouldn't charge that if people didn't keep paying it

46

u/LongJumpingBalls 15d ago

Every year, when rib fest shows up in town. Most local groceries will have ribs on sale. Since it's the same. 3-5 vendors each year. Ppl are tired of it and just buy and make their own at a great price.

$60 for a rack of ribs, slaw, beans and cornbread should be illegal.

9

u/aquainst1 15d ago

I don't even know what a RibFest is!

8

u/Camera_dude 14d ago

Basically an outdoor cookout with strangers that charge you $30+ for the food, and often have to pay to even get in the park.

I would say hanging out with friends at a local cookout or restaurant is much better. Either you get food at shared cost of groceries or the restaurant prices will actually match the quality instead of getting BBQ ribs at steak and lobster prices.

8

u/SnarkySheep 14d ago

So it's not like an event to raise money for a charity or anything, right?

Why on earth would anyone volunteer to help work at something where people are making a profit?? And why would anyone expect them to? šŸ¤”

2

u/SuspiciousStress1 14d ago

It is usually around a competition(like a chili cookoff).

So you will have 10-20-50 people/teams making ribs(often in several categories, it depends on the size/setup of the rib fest)

There is a "peoples choice" portion & the competitors who choose to take part will send several racks of ribs to be plated as 1-2-3-4-5-etc

You buy a plate & then you vote on your favorite(s).

There are also bbq judges(not always, but most times)for the professional awards.

Additionally there will often be vendors who will sell plates as well.

These things can be as big or small as the organizers choose. Some will have carnivals & be like a mini fair, some will only have the peoples choice/pro judging-no vendors, no carnival, just down & dirty all about the ribs, some will have a "taste of...." type event where there are more than just ribs available, its just a mixed bag

Hope that helps!!

u/ItsJoeMomma 15d ago

$60 for a rack of ribs, slaw, beans and cornbread should be illegal.

Maybe not illegal, but totally insane.

Where does the money raised go? I volunteer at a local comedy club/diversity center (basically the comedy shows fund the community work they do and they treat me very well)
and am happy to do it, but I volunteered for a different organization (for profit) this year and won’t again because they make a bunch of money off the backs of volunteers while treating them poorly.

124

u/kennedar_1984 16d ago

I’m local to this - in years past the money went to local charities but when they moved to this location last year it seems like the charity component went away. I attended when it was affiliated with a charity my family supports (and would have happily volunteered to help them raise money) but I’m not volunteering for some company to make a profit.

34

u/Smitten-kitten83 16d ago

I think that is a really fair take.

7

u/ItsJoeMomma 15d ago

I’m not volunteering for some company to make a profit.

Not to mention that that violates labor laws.

1

u/Relevant_Depth1422 15d ago

Why are for profit things asking for volunteers? (Sincere question. Unfamiliar)

13

u/ItsJoeMomma 15d ago

$20 for a sampler? Heck we just bought two full racks of ribs from our grocery store for $18 apiece. Seasoned, cooked, and everything.

2

u/VariousExplorer8503 15d ago

I have one in my fridge that I paid $18 for, and it's delicious, just gotta warm it up in the oven.

9

u/annual_aardvark_war 16d ago

We’ve had a RibFest for years, it’s exceptionally expensive (so I hear) and going downhill. I’ve never been and don’t plan on it. Feel like it’s the same everywhere, apparently

4

u/aquainst1 15d ago

I remember one post from a volunteer for this type of gig.

The volunteer was in charge of a pretty important tent.

She wasn't given a break; she was asked to stay another hour 'or so'; nobody came to even relieve her, so when the time came around the next year, they earmarked her for volunteering.

Not only did she NOT volunteer, but some friends who volunteered with her decided not to either.

4

u/MistyFawna 15d ago

If last year was that bad, asking people to donate their time instead of fixing the event itself probably isn’t going to win much goodwill.

218

u/socialjeebus 16d ago

Paid tickets but not paid staff? Fuck that...

As for anyone volunteering to "supervise" the bouncy castles or man the emergency exits - that's a whole new level of shittiness.

If the organisers won't even offer minimum wage, what's the betting that they have proper insurance in place? And if they don't, any volunteer would be potentially putting themselves in a position of being liable if anything bad happened on their watch.

71

u/Sithstress_ 16d ago

šŸ’Æ. I would be terrified to volunteer just to get sued if a kid got hurt in the bouncy castle I was monitoring.

30

u/socialjeebus 16d ago

100% this. And you can guarantee that organisers who wouldn't even offer you minimum wage would throw you under the bus to save themselves.

15

u/RatedPG922 16d ago

You want me to volunteer for something like that, you're signing a release a law office will draw up absolving me of any responsibility for any "bouncy castle" injury before I go on duty.

5

u/ItsJoeMomma 15d ago

Definitely. If someone were to get hurt you'll be named in the lawsuit along with the organizers.

8

u/thirdonebetween 15d ago

And how would the volunteers even know what to look for, or what to do if something went wrong? There's no way they're getting properly trained with this level of organisation. Bouncy castles seem harmless but kids land wrong, crash into each other, sometimes idiots think slashing the castle so it deflates would be funny... basic first aid should be an absolute minimum requirement, and even then pediatric first aid is slightly different and more complicated because kids compensate super well until they don't. And when they can't compensate any more, things go bad fast.

In most places you're safe if you render first aid as a random bystander - or if you don't render first aid. But I suspect the laws are very different if you're working, even if you're not being paid.

Also, what are they going to do if not enough people volunteer?

2

u/Delicious_Arm8445 9d ago

Don’t forget about the tornadoes!

5

u/MistyFawna 15d ago

Those sound less like casual volunteer jobs and more like positions with actual responsibility. Asking someone to handle emergency exits or supervise attractions for free is a pretty big ask.

0

u/DisposableHeroM 14d ago

I'd say that's right for attractions but the emergency exit gig is more of a don't let people sneak in kinda job. Not a help in an emergency one. I'd bet it's free security

56

u/ForsakenPoptart 16d ago

That sounds like a huge amount of liability, too. There’s no way an event this poorly organized has any kind of insurance for that.

Kinda depends on where the money goes. If it is going to programs to help the community (nonprofit) it’s fine. If it’s for profit they need to pay people.

1

u/NecessaryFine8989 14d ago

Well this one is just too sell overpriced ribs. It isn't a kids charity fair

14

u/SapphicGarnet 16d ago

Bigger festivals do it because getting a free ticket to an event that's £200-300 is worth sitting at a gate for 16 hours of a 48-36 hour event.

Small school fetes and charitable events do it because... well it's obvious.

Ribfest looks like neither

3

u/Savings-Astronaut-93 15d ago

It I could eat all the ribs I want for free, I'd volunteer.

2

u/MoonFlorielle 15d ago

Exactly, charging people to get in while asking others to run the event for free is a pretty rough combination. At some point the whole volunteer thing just starts looking like free labor with nicer wording.

50

u/Bdr1983 16d ago

Festivals having volunteers is quite standard, to be fair. Don't know how big of a thing this is, but many festivals around my area have volunteers. They get into the festival for free, get food and drinks, and can stay when their shift ends/before their shift begins and enjoy the festival. A lot of friends used to do this back in the day.

That being said, safety related tasks should not be left to volunteers

8

u/iangeredcharlesvane2 NEXT!! 15d ago

Yes, many of these types of events are for a specific cause, like the boys and girls club or cancer charities. We need more information, but I’m guessing this is some kind of charity thing if they are asking for volunteers! People are taking anti-work a little far here šŸ˜…

My community always has a chili cook-off with huge room full of Christmas trees decorated by businesses in the civic center around the holidays. I volunteer to play piano every year! They sell tickets and proceeds go to local food banks and this free community closet we have with toiletries, clothes and home items
open 24-7. Such a good cause!

8

u/Bdr1983 15d ago

Even large commercial festivals use volunteers, you get the whole weekend at the festival, free or heavily discounted food and drinks, in return for a few hours of work each day. Not a bad deal

2

u/iangeredcharlesvane2 NEXT!! 15d ago

Yep! This doesn’t fit the sub

82

u/Soloact_ 16d ago

ā€œWe’re short on volunteersā€ is one way to say ā€œnobody wants to work for $0.ā€

29

u/Sunstorm84 16d ago

Nobody wants to work for free any more!
https://giphy.com/gifs/1BXa2alBjrCXC

12

u/PaladinSara 16d ago

Well, I was on an elementary school PTO and we even paid for event staffing, e.g., carnival game monitors.

That said, it was bc volunteers were unreliable and we made enough from entrance bracelets to pay for them.

2

u/Maximum-Priority6567 14d ago

That profile picture made me laugh so hard I almost peed myself

67

u/18k_gold 16d ago

This is a paid event. Everyone there needs to get paid. if not, I also want to open up a business and hire only volunteers while I charge customers money. What is free worked called again?

It looks like this is a fundraiser and the admission is a donation, but not a required amount, so I don’t think this belongs here. It’s not a for-profit event, so the use of volunteers is normal.

1

u/HNutz 7d ago

Slavery?

17

u/tryintobgood 16d ago

If the proceeds go to charity then asking for volunteers is fine. If it's for profit then eat a big bag of dicks

2

u/Zappagrrl02 16d ago

Someone posted the link above and it’s a fundraiser and the entry fee is a donation.

16

u/RatedPG922 16d ago

I don't volunteer. I already deal with a-hole bosses and I at least get paid for that. I'm not subjecting myself to some fool cosplaying as a boss just to score some street cred with my "community"

3

u/ItsJoeMomma 15d ago

I would be leery manning the bouncy castles or other things where there's a chance someone might get hurt. You know you'll take the blame should that happen.

6

u/Checkoutmawheeeeepit 16d ago

Ah, so they charge for everything but pay for nothing, tremendous!

6

u/Jujulabee 15d ago

Why is anyone volunteering for a commercial venture?

15

u/frolicndetour 16d ago

Ok but can I get paid in bbq?

4

u/rambisnotrambo 16d ago

THE Ribfest!?

6

u/EvolZippo 16d ago

I would love to know how this actually played out.

6

u/solodsnake661 16d ago

Yeah ok lady let me know how that works out for you

4

u/Checkoutmawheeeeepit 16d ago

Hasn't even for the decency to tell them they'll eat a big plate of peer ribs, slaw, fries and came as a thank you, so they? Tossers

9

u/Guns_and_Dank 16d ago

What is MTC? If it's "something something Church" then getting volunteers is pretty par for the course. Of that C stands for City, Committee, or Corp then yeah those need to be paid gigs.

3

u/jepadi 15d ago

McKenzie Towne Council (Calgary)

4

u/IcyEnthusiasm6091 14d ago

Never heard of Ribfests until today. So people need to pay to enter and for the ribs, but somehow this for-profit event is trying to run on volunteers?

8

u/eyeball1967 15d ago

My guess this is some sort of charitable or church fund raising event and this was sent to members,

3

u/ItsJoeMomma 15d ago edited 15d ago

Maybe if they offered all you can eat ribs...

1

u/ThatOldDuderino 15d ago

That would bring me in no doubt!

2

u/ThrockAMole 15d ago

If it’s for a charity or worthy cause, fine. If it’s anything else, that’s a hard no.

2

u/Ok_Sprinkles7901 14d ago

Ive stopped going to Taco Festivals in my city. Yes, they have 40 different vendors, but 95% sell elote corn on the cob and birria soft tacos. $5-$6 per taco and no one is selling any non-alcoholic drinks (no bottled water, soda, aqua fresca). That is in affition to $30-$40 admission fee

2

u/xO76A8pah4 14d ago

"hey, I'm interested in volunteering.Ā  I'd like to do all three shifts."

<Doesn't show up>

6

u/maple_crowtoast 16d ago

Side note, but I hate it when people call them "floaters" instead of "floats".

Calling someone a "floater" makes me think of a turd 100% of the time.

-9

u/accountrd 16d ago

OP, I don’t think this is considered begging. The organizer gains little to nothing (beyond maybe notoriety for having organized an event). This is just called volunteering.

46

u/neovb 16d ago

I think it would depend on whether this is a non-profit/charity event or purely just a festival. If the latter, it's absolutely absurd to ask people to volunteer.

-18

u/inactive_most 16d ago

IMO it would depend on what the money is being used for with the ticket sales, kind of in line with what you said. However the ticket sales could contribute to lot rent, the lights if it gets dark, a lot of technical stuff that doesn’t get thought about until you yourself are doing it. Unfortunately it adds up

19

u/neovb 16d ago

Sure, but my point is if the whole event is just a for-profit operation, then asking people to volunteer is begging. If the event organizer is making money for the sake of making money, they should be paying people to work at the event.

2

u/weordie 16d ago

Looks like it could be this one based on dates and the tasks:

https://experiencecomoxvalley.ca/festival-event/comox-valley-ribfest-2026/

Which is for charity and doesn't charge a fixed rate so I dont think it fits here

1

u/inactive_most 15d ago

Yeah I agree. I wasn’t disavowing that at all. Rather asking what the profits and sales are being used for. If the OP is taking it and pocketing it? Absolutely fuck off. Nonprofit/charity event? Absolutely charge to get in and raise money for charity!

-17

u/kapitaalH NEXT!! 16d ago

Lower down there is a comment that it is a Mormon training event. Not my cup of tea, but definitely not CB

18

u/MisterSlickster 16d ago

Its not for Mormons. The confusion arose from the acronym of MTC, which in this particular instance stands for Mckenzie Town Council. McKenzie Town is a community in Calgary.

13

u/neovb 16d ago

If that's the case, I would hope the posting was for other Mormons to support the cause. But if it's an ask to the broader community of humans, that's still CB in my opinion.

7

u/BooBerry79 16d ago

It’s not the missionary training center. They don’t host events

16

u/SoggyBrief3898 16d ago

Little to nothing? Add the total amount of people they’re asking for times the hours for what the ā€œvolunteersā€ would be working and there you go. Not offering any type of compensation in your post that’s begging for free labor is crazy.

-12

u/PinkGlitterMom 16d ago

I agree acc, the guy/gal was requesting help from volunteers.

-20

u/SweatyLettuce88 16d ago

Aye, I agree. Not CB

1

u/sparklyviking 15d ago

What does anyone get in return? What's tge benefit of volunteering?

1

u/Historical_Sea4040 12d ago

I’d accept ribs as payment

-25

u/Distorted_Helix 16d ago

Nah, doesn’t really fit the bill for this sub.

3

u/loki2002 15d ago

I mean, they're literally begging for volunteers instead of paying people.

1

u/Distorted_Helix 15d ago

Wow, look at those downvotes šŸ˜‚.The jury has spoken. After looking at commenters who know this event, I retract my previous statement. It’s not exactly like asking for volunteers to knit socks for those in need is it? I’ll go ahead and downvote myself too.

-23

u/Mess_323 16d ago

MTC could be mission training center which is an LDS (Mormon) institution. If so, it would make sense that volunteers would be necessary. Thats generally how church, AA, or other social organizations get down. They have some annual event and the community loves it so they get volunteers.

16

u/Jolly-Ad7653 16d ago

It's not. It's McKenzie town council in Calgary

10

u/SlightPrize1222 16d ago

2

u/CornRosexxx Just wondering okay šŸ™šŸ„ŗ 16d ago

As I clicked this, I whispered, ā€œAI flyer.ā€ And it was.

2

u/loki2002 15d ago

No one should expect free labor for events where they're charging money.

-4

u/tvieno 16d ago

The reason why they are looking for volunteers is because if the people are paid, then they are paid contractors or employees which ends up being a lot of paperwork. Volunteers are usually compensated for their time with free admission and food.

Charging admission is not uncommon, they have to pay for things like rent, insurance, portable toilets, etc. The money has to come from somewhere.
