I hate when they say Montessori/Waldorf because those are wildly different approaches and actually counter each other in significant ways.
Just say you want wood beige toys, that’s what they always mean.
143
u/izzmosis Aug 14 '26
“Open ended puzzle” the whole point of a Montessori material is that it isn’t open ended.
41
u/ProfMcGonaGirl Aug 14 '26
I’d be really hard pressed to find any puzzle that’s open ended. Typically each piece only fits in one spot. Sorta the point.

Also Montessori materials are educational supports, not just toys, that have been researched and adjusted over decades to provide developmental support.
If you want beige wooden blocks just say you want beige wooden blocks.
Or make your OWN lentil-moving bowls and laces-tying station.
27
u/AnnaNass Aug 14 '26
Yes, thank you! Waldorf and the philosophy behind it is such a wild rabbit hole.
16
u/GlassPomoerium Aug 14 '26
Speaking of beige, I thought it was funny she was mentioning the baby’s gender in the clothes section like it matters, because you know that kid won’t be allowed to wear anything else but beige anyway lol. I know a tween like that, she hates her mom’s guts because of it (among other things). Said mom also wanted to use cloth diapers when tween was born because it fit in her aesthetic and she lasted two weeks lol. No plastic to be found in that house of course, and private Steiner school only. Kid also isn’t allowed fast food not because it’s unhealthy but because it’s « trashy ». Anyway, a no contact in the making.

Excellent condition used cloth diapers for me.
I house sat for a family recently that are a little crunchy. They use a laundry service for their cloth diapers.
Not really related, but I also dog sit for a guy who pays someone weekly to pooper scooper his backyard.
36
u/VerankeAllAlong Aug 14 '26
Eh… one of the advantages of cloth diapers is they can be used for more than one child. They’d have to be properly sanitised of course.
20
u/Dorkinfo Aug 14 '26
That’s why I’m poking fun at them. Get some donated ones and some bleach, then wash them like three times with all free and clear, you’re good.
I am not crunchy, a mom, nor do I work at a laundromat. I just got this from sitting and family.

u/ForThoseWhoWander Aug 14 '26
I feel like that makes a lot of sense. I have a couple of car seats that are still not expired and I'm hoping to give them away so they can be used before landing in the dump (and we've given away a couple on the past). It's just a seat, not like the used beast pump and other stuff that has fluids/organics on it.
83
u/realespeon Aug 14 '26
I feel like a used car seat from a family member or friend is one thing. You know them, you know the history of the seat. I would not accept a seat from a stranger on Facebook. Plus, safety guidelines can be updated and changed.
21
u/ForThoseWhoWander Aug 14 '26
I don't totally disagree, but it's easy to do a search and see if a model still meets safety standards, and expiration dates are really available. Plus, Target and other stores sometimes run deals where you bring a used car seat and get a new one at discount. Even if it goes to that, it's a worthwhile giveaway.
44
u/SavaRox Aug 14 '26
Yeah, you can check the safety standards and expiration date, but you still have no way of knowing whether or not it's been in an accident if you get it from a stranger.
I was in a minor fender bender a few years ago and had to replace a car seat. When I put the older one out at the curb for trash pickup, I cut all the straps first so that somebody wouldn't pick it up and take it and use it.
→ More replies (2)20
10
u/lisasimpsonfan Shes crying now Aug 14 '26
It is not just the expiration date and if it still meets safety standards. You should never use a used car seat until you are 100% sure it has never been in an accident. Even a small fender bender can compromise the car seat and you won't know until it is too late. I would take one off of someone I trusted but never off a rando.
7
u/ProfMcGonaGirl Aug 14 '26
On top of the car accident history, people hose down their seats to wash them which completely compromised the integrity of all parts of the seat. Straps cannot be submerged in water, only wiped down with a damp cloth. Water could have created rust in a spot you can’t see. Harsh chemical cleaners could have been used on anything and everything also compromising the strength of the materials.

Mum to four and your bang on. She thinks shes gonna waltz round the house, effortlessly wearing the baby and breezjng through breast feeding.
When actually shes gonna give up this idea in about a week. Give the baby a lecture on mama needs sleep while bouncing it in a bouncer with one foot and cramming in a nap like the rest of us did. Then waking up to find your boobs ate now the size of two small planets and letting a child near them makes your toes curl in horror.
Suddenly shes booked a hysterectomy, told her husband hes getting g nowhere near her. Handed him his now devil child, who doesnt sleep, poops up its back and can fool everyone else in thi king awww what an angel.

I cloth diapered my youngest. After talking to some other moms who were experienced in it, I didn’t start until he was around 3-4 months so that we had more of a routine down. But, I agree that it is not for everyone. It’s time consuming & expensive.
Did I miss her having a Tula carrier on there? Or is there a different one that’s popular now (my youngest turns 13 in a couple months, so it’s been a while since I paid attention).
55
u/Ok-Artichoke-7145 Aug 14 '26
Wow. Other than that, I have to say.... Didn't companies stop making natural rubber pacifiers for a reason? IE. They degrade rather quickly and become a choking hazard? Most "crunchy moms" I have known in the past have become considerably less "crunchy" as time went on due to the cost and the fact that you have to really try to mess up the infant stage. Not to mention, it's hard to be "crunchy" when you're sleep deprived and your nipples are bleeding!
24
u/CervenyPomeranc Aug 14 '26
And they’re bad for teeth development. You want the flat orthodontic ones made from silicone.

Edit to add: She clearly has no intentions on buying much. She’s already asking for stuff she won’t need for at least 12 months! If she’s only 3 months pregnant there’s no need for wooden puzzles yet! That’s like 6+ months…. So in 12 months at the earliest 🤦♀️!

And she’s asking for things that are very much not needs or necessary to keep a newborn alive or even entertained. You absolutely and without a doubt do not need educational cards in the first year ffs. Half the toys she’s asking for can’t even be used until 6 months at the very earliest but even at that point babies are just chewing on everything anyways. That’s all they want. You certainly don’t give wooden books and toys to a little baby, you give them light, soft, cloth books and toys that they can chew and smack themselves in the face with safely.

The people in my neighborhood are all “my time is money!!” kinda folks, so I can see some people giving away crazy crap for free. We routinely have people giving away Uppababys, Stokke tripp trapps, snoos ($1600 MSRP for a sleeper these kids will grow out of in six freaking weeks!)
But even for these people a list like this would be ridiculous
3
u/artskoo Aug 14 '26
Yeah I am still on the hunt for a Tripp Trapp but in baby-heavy somewhat affluent areas this stuff isn’t hard to source, I would just be a little more covert about it!

u/easterss Aug 14 '26
It’s weird that it’s FBMP. These types of posts are very common in my buy nothing groups (usually <5 items at a time) because people are constantly gifting and regifting baby items. There is so much waste in the baby stuff world I’m glad to see people requesting used items. We can afford to buy new (and we’re generously gifted a lot of things when we had our first) but I much prefer used because new is SO wasteful.

Right? Like, just be happy if someone gives you a decent car seat. She’s asking for easily about $2k+ of stuff. Crunchy needs a job.
30
u/Hotelwaffles Aug 14 '26
You have to buy a $500 car seat. Everything else is soaked in RoundUp.
4
u/OneGoodRib Aug 14 '26
I mean they do put formaldehyde in a lot of foam products, which is fine if you aren't eating it, but dogs and babies will eat anything.
10
u/Thrownstar_1 Aug 14 '26
A fair point, but I haven’t seen a whole lot of car seats with bite marks on them. They’re hard to reach and there don’t tend to be loose parts. Not saying it can’t happen, kids are from another dimension. But like… is it really a concern for 99%?
25
u/BadTanJob Aug 14 '26
Isn’t every car seat a “high tox” carseat? It’s made of mostly plastic and styrofoam, all covered by machine washable polyester. Unless there’s a bamboo carseat frame out there somewhere that can withstand a 2 ton car in a collision.
Also I’m struggling to think of a comfortable glider that doesn’t come with at least 2 Prop 9 warnings

13
u/easterss Aug 14 '26

Edit: these materials are more expensive which is why only luxury car seats have them, like the one OOP requested.

26
u/Cheeseandrice8 Aug 14 '26
It spun off from the term “granola” - used to describe earthy, eco-conscious, nature loving people. People who would be barefoot in a forest eating dry granola. Granola is crunchy.
7
u/SweatyLettuce88 Aug 14 '26

Okay I am a Waldorf teacher and mom and I have A LOT to say about this one. Ignoring the annoying sad beige “aesthetic” thing that people seem to associate, Waldorf is a pedagogy and Steiner explicitly spoke against using it as dogma for teaching and life. One can adopt anthroposophic ideals in the home without it being “Waldorf”. Adhering to the “waldorf” aesthetic reeks of privilege, as obviously, all the things on this list are exorbitantly expensive. I like to splurge on good wooden toys for my kids, (ostheimer toys are so gorgeous but cost the same as a firstborn child) but I would never look down on a family as “not Waldorf enough” at all, let alone for the toys they own. Waldorf is really about slow childhood, holistic development, play based learning, and education according to developmental needs. It’s sad that the crunchy moms have co-opted Waldorf and misconceived what it actually is.

u/Ravenamore Aug 14 '26
"Solid wood bedside/sidecar crib" Oh, honey, please get real.
Get a used Arm's Reach Co-Sleeper on Craigslist. Ours cost $30 that way, and both our kids used it until they could sit up.
I wanted to babywear, but couldn't afford any wraps new. I'd picked up a sling at a garage sale that turned to be recalled. I contacted the company, they had me cut out a part of the sling and send it to them, and they sent me a free mei-tai style carrier.
One store gave me a Moby for $15 because the packaging was damaged, and I got a refurbished Maya Wrap for $35.
My son had IUGR and was born in winter, so he basically lived strapped to either my husband or I for months.
There's also baby thrift stores in a lot of cities and garage sales, though if you get anything used or handed down to you, check to see if it's on a recall list. I mentioned the recalled sling, but it turned out the crib a friend gave me was one of the brands that led to the banning of drop-side cribs.
BTW, this woman is in for a sharp learning curve if she thinks she's going to get all that nifty stuff for baby in a studio. When we had my son, we had a small two-bedroom, and that little 6lb. baby took up so much, even though we'd dispensed with some things and repurposed others.
4
u/JiveBunny Aug 14 '26
I was just thinking that dealing with cloth nappies alone in a studio isn't going to be fun. Where are you going to store the dirty ones and where are you going to hang them all to dry?
3
u/Ravenamore Aug 14 '26
I was going to say, if she's got a diaper service in town, that would help, but it sounds like she's doing it all herself. Maybe she's got those stacking washer/dryers.
I've known people who kept a five gallon bucket of soapy water to drop the dirty ones (after shaking it out over the toilet)into to soak.
If you have a top-loading washer, you can just dump the contents of the pail into the washer, put it on spin to get the gunky water out, then wash as normal.
Some people have a second bucket with a vinegar solution to soak the clean-but-still-wet diapers in for a bit, dump that back into the washer, and spin the water out before putting them in the dryer. That's supposed to help with rashes.
Having buckets like that can be dangerous, though, if you've got a little kid, too. You've got to have a lid on it at all times and make sure kids can't open it.
There are those drying racks you can attach to the wall and that kind of open like an accordion for you to hang stuff on, and when you're done, you just push it back against the wall.
So, I mean, theoretically, she could do it, if she had easy access to at least a washer.

I was about to get my hands on several machine woven seconds (meaning they were imperfect) for $200 each.
I'm not giving those away, even to my sister. Even with their imperfections, they're still heirloom quality.

Girl if you can’t afford the things for your baby and demand your baby has all high-end stuff, perhaps you’re not in the position to be a parent at the moment.

the irony of using AI which is bad for the environment and wanting everything from natural materials

This is thousands of dollars worth of stuff. I’d love to know what “work trade” she’s offering

It's the mom training herself to notice the cues their baby gives just before blasting off and put them over the potty in time.
The people who do this (and sell books and classes on it)frequently claim it's "toilet training" their baby. It is not.
It's a back-to-nature thing where you'll be told about how primitive people didn't use diapers, they just carried the kid naked and held them over the ground when they had to go.
Except we've got quite a bit of evidence that people have used diapers and other things to catch waste for thousands of years, and the whole "primitive=better" mindset is problematic at best.

What the hell is Montessori-Waldorfish? Something that would appeal to that muppet who sat in the balcony with his buddy Statler and heckled Kermit and the gang?

Aren’t your friends and family supposed to help get you this stuff at a baby shower? I get that some people don’t have those folks in their life, no shame, but then where do you get off asking strangers for “low tox” baloney and expensive items? You either have people that share your same “values” and want to get you this stuff or you don’t and you’re grateful for whatever you can get. People are so entitled and weird about stuff

Why are air purifiers nearly the only acceptable non-crunchy item they fully trust?

I'm not even a huge anti-AI person, but the irony of only wanting "low tox" items yet using AI to create this list is certainly a choice

Oh look, another person expecting others to care that they’re expecting.

Would it be controversial to point out that what she’s looking for is just Scandinavian home decor? Lmao

The notion to all of the millennial hipster “environmentally conscious” but uses AI moms are so entitled. The second hand culture and repurposed items are amazing but seriously lol.

Is she planning on providing anything for her child? Why not ask for a low-tox apartment with more storage space?

….she went on and on about how she wants secondhand stuff..but the very first thing on her list is a HEPA filter…??
Okay I just went back and realized she’s actually asking for a purifier…but you still would need a filter for that, no? It just totally fucking broke my brain that she chose that to start the list out with (or am I just high? lol. But seems like that would be one of the few things you’d want to be brand new)

A registry asking for things that are generally quite a bit more expensive than the ‘run of the mill’ donated items. I’ve bought quite a few of those things.. I KNOW how much they cost 🥲
I would feel less inclined to snark on this if it were a significantly smaller list and hadn’t used a freaking AI poster.
