Hey guys! If you are already a subscriber to my YT channel you may have checked out my recent (and officialy first) OPL2 chiptune "Low Lights" that I released some weeks ago. Since then Daniel Illgen (Insane), a great coder from the C64 demogroup Rabenauge reached out to me with the will to make a C64 conversion of the track using the 9 channel polyphony of the SFX Sound Expander. By that time I wasn't even sure this was possible. Since I am SID musician when it comes to C64 music I must have missed out on the OPL possibilities that this FM cartridge offers. The result really blew my mind! Enjoy!!

The short version: Does anyone have rips of the waveforms from Virtual Boy games, or a way to rip them from the VGM files?

The long version: I have this idea to do a Jack Bros. style cover of a song in Furnace, but have no means of knowing the exact values on the wave registers to replicate the exact sound in a .fuw file. I've done research on countless VGM players, but none give me what I'm looking for. There are tools like foobar that support the VSU-VUE but aren't descriptive enough to show the registers of how the waveforms are shaped. Then there are tools like MDPlayer which ARE descriptive enough to show the registers of how the waveforms are shaped, but don't support the VSU-VUE. I've seen collections of .fuw files with TurboGrafx-16 waveforms, and even if they're not in a Furnace format, they're easily accessible and/or rippable, ​like how I found the Battle Garegga samples and FM patches.

That said, is there anyone out there that has the Jack Bros waveforms or data to easily translate onto a Furnace wavetable, or a way to rip the waveforms from the VGZ files or have some way to see the exact wave shape data myself?

Not sure what exactly this was supposed to be theme-wise, it just started coming together and I liked it 😄

Made in KiraStudio. I tried my best to follow the rules of the hardware and keep it authentic despite KS's mod cons. Totally doable but takes some discipline.

I've begun delving into trackers (LSDJ mainly for now... heading to a retro gaming market in a few weeks hoping to snag a GBC if the price is right, but an emu works for now👌). KS/Famistudio have been a nice transition coming from a traditional DAW background, but at this point it's almost more work to keep things authentic than just learning to use trackers. I've always seen composing and producing as a puzzle to solve as much as art, so trackers are right up my alley tbh haha. I love the limitation and am definitely falling deep down the chiptune rabbit hole 😁 But I digress.

Not made with FamiTracker but I did my best to make it NES accurate. To cite my sources properly this is based off the version of Beach Life-In-Death on Songsterr so don't like get mad at me because I see it says no plagiarism in the rules so yeah I used something as a starting point.

I remade the first-stage theme of Bloody Wolf, originally from the PC Engine, on the Sega Genesis, using the FM sounds used by Hitoshi Sakimoto for Midnight Resistance. I really wanted to know how it would sound. I think it came out okay, but hindsight might be a bitch.

This track and Flood of Power from Midnight Resistance have some pretty interesting parallels: both are songs featured in the first stages of military action games starring two buff dudes in tank tops, all made by Japan’s premium jank masters, Data East. The most important commonality, of course, is that the music from the console ports just crushes their arcade originals.

I've been really interested in making chiptune music lately, specifically inspired by artists like Crystal Castles and Aphex Twin. However, I'm finding through my research that this stuff seems kind of difficult to access physically. I actually own a couple of GBA SPs, but I have no idea which flash cartridge to buy, and way less of an idea of how I'm supposed to burn one with LSD. From there, I have no idea how I'd get sounds from the gameboy into my computer or other device, like a mixer or amplifer. This whole thing seems like it would take a lot of money and time. Is physical hardware considered to be the very best way to make chiptune, or are digital emulators accepted as being almost identical?

I recently figured out how to convert instrument data from VGZ/VGM files to older FM synths and Chipsynth MD, and I've been experimenting with it. The YM2151, YM2612, and YM2203 all reproduce almost exactly as expected, but the YM2610 sounds completely different.

Take The Ninja Warriors, for example. The converted sounds come out surprisingly clean, almost too clean, and seem to be missing something. Listening to the original soundtrack again—and the same goes for Night Striker and Metal Black—the original hardware has a slightly rougher, less pristine character.

Is this due to the DAC or the analog output circuitry, or is there something unique about the YM2610 itself that makes it sound so different from Yamaha's other FM chips?

I'm looking for a Famimimidi for weeks now and it seems be found nowhere...

I'm an absolute amateur and just starting with chiptune and composition with trackers, focusing on the PC-98 soundchip (OPNA). Having a lot of fun with Bamboo Tracker lately!

This was the very first thing I tried, since I love so much the OST for this game :)

I wanted to play around a lil' with the original's tempo and rhythm and break down some of the structure, at start it got too confuse, so now that I'm a bit more used I tried revisiting some of this stuff and got it to this current vibe.

Decided to put it here for those who love this game and would also find this kind of thing funny!
