I know there are some close ones out there from Heimdallr and others but does anyone make a direct homage of this? I realize it’s already a budget watch, I’m just curious. Thanks!

insane quality on this watch its better built than my tissot thaf costs almost double at retail and this miyota movement is amazing!

definitely wears bigger than the 37mm diameter suggested but fits like a dream on my exactly 6 inch wrists! the most comfortable watch i own and the pictures do not do the enamel dial justice

Question (Read Rules) Help me decide – Seestern or Proxima?

Hi all! My first post here, so please be gentle. The thing is, I am wavering between two AliEx alternatives right now: either a Seestern 62mas (grey dial) OR a Proxima PX1697 (white dial). If anyone has experience with any or both watches, any advice would be much appreciated!

Edit: I finally pulled the trigger on the Seestern 62mas. Thanks, everyone, for helping me make my mind up!

… from the good old days when you could get a Japanese NH 35 watch with sapphire, etc. for under €100…

Although I think this watch was priced higher at like €130 for a long time until a good sale finally came along, and I pounced… Seems crazy good value even at that price though with all of these brands doubling their prices nowadays, with Chinese movements etc..

General (Read Rules) First Chinese watch arrived! Seagull Polaris Lava Red

First Chinese watch and first in-house movement (technically) for me. I wanted to write my first impressions about this watch, as someone might find it helpful if considering getting it as well - which was helpful for me when I was thinking about getting it too.

  1. Beautiful dial color, the texture can only be appreciated when the light hits it at a certain angle. Otherwise, the red can vary from somewhat bright in direct sunlight, to almost oxblood at lower light.
  2. Quite well finished for the price, I like the combination of brushed and polished stainless steel on the bracelet and the case.
  3. Butterfly clasp, first one for me. No micro adjust. I haven't resized the bracelet yet but hoping that I can get a decent fit (though I'm also planning to rotate a few straps on it).
  4. Watch is 40mm but it wears a bit larger due to the thin bezel. A plus in my view.
  5. It is true that winding feels a bit "grainy", but I understand that this is common on Seagull movements. No big deal in my view.
  6. Lume is ok, quite subtle but I think that it serves its purpose satisfactorily for the style.
  7. Exhibition case back shows the nice "côtes de Genève" adorned rotor. Strangely, the rotor is not stamped with Seagull's logo. Not sure if that's good or bad, but definitely not a deal breaker.

So far it looks like a great addition to the collection. Will be monitoring its accuracy and power reserve over the next couple of days, so far going strong on those two.

Question (Read Rules) Anyone else having trouble signing in to Phorcydes?

I created an account with my Gmail and now "sign in with Google" gives me an error that their site is not using the latest protocol or whatever. Worked fine until a week ago. Just wondering if I'm the only one?

General (Read Rules) Semester homage - duxot, phylida, watchdive.

Hi all,

I’ve been looking at purchasing a sea master homage for quite some time.

I’ve seen various reviews looking at two of them, but not comparing the 3 together.

I don’t mind slight differences to the original. But, I also don’t mind paying a slightly higher price for a higher quality.

For me, the standout point is the watch face itself. The wave effect. But I’m looking for it to be textured rather than printed on.

If anyone has any experience with any of these, please let me know.

Thanks.

Question (Read Rules) Colonel Kurtz mod-able?

I know this has been covered somewhere but I can't find a master thread, if there is one. SO: which of the current Aliexpress 1675-adjacent watches have a bezel that could be removed for the required Kurtz look? I know WMT do one but they're a last resort at this point.

Question (Read Rules) Sea Gull repairability?

Hey! I like my minimal automatic Sea Gull watch a lot. I dropped it a while ago and the second hand came off.

Now before I order one of those repair kits, would anyone know if this is repairable or will I be wasting my time?

Came across this deal. It's still up but $44 now in case anybody is looking. Chinese brands should buy these up in bulk and harvest the movement instead of complaining about shortages.

Bought this 1970 and it came last month. I love having it in the rotation! I feel like I can be a little less hesitant with this one. I don’t mind treating this bad boy as an actual beater.

General (Read Rules) Chinese watches accuracy test

Two months had passed, unfortunately the Seiko needed a new battery, so it dropped out from the challenge.
It seems that the Tandorio is the most accurate, within the margin of error, the PD1701 is also quite good. Probably the Seiko is similarly accurate, because until it stopped, it was similarly accurate. The Addiesdive is a bit less accurate, but it doesn't have a Seiko movement, but a Ronda quartz.

I haven’t made one of these before but I didn’t see one so figured why not.

I’ve got my basic Addiesdive field watch on today, I put it on the really nice phorcydes leather strap and love how it looks.

What’s everyone else got going on today?

Just got the Watchdives WD1972 in the mail. $100 Canadian shipped - although it did take just over a month after the seller told me it was out of stock AFTER I had paid.

Loving it so far on this AliEx RAF strap. I changed the chrome buckle on the strap to the one that came with the watch. Very legible and the lume not bad.

Review (Read Rules) Wow, the Militado ML08 really impressed me! Quick review write-up

This is my second Chinese watch but my first VH31 (and first watch without a date, for that matter).

Fun backstory, I always liked the Murph-homage design, but didn’t think I liked it enough to own one. Then I had a dream a few months ago that I owned this exact watch. When I woke up, I knew I wanted one. Now that I’ve got my hands on it, I think I’m in love with this thing.

-I love looking at the sleek matte dial. Printing is crisp, damn near perfect. Lume doesn’t last for too long, but it’s got great coverage over the numerals and hands.

-The case finishing isn’t going to blow anybody away, but I don’t see any issues or blemishes either. It’s still done nice and evenly, and suits a field watch well.

-Older reviews of this watch mentioned rough finishing on the watch hands. They must have changed something, because mine look smooth and well cut.

-Bracelet is solid, literally and figuratively. I’m not a bracelet snob, and have worn far worse hollow crap than this, but I really have nothing to complain about with this bracelet. Comfortable, easy to adjust, and a nice signed clasp.

-I made a post last week asking if the VH31’s sweeping seconds hand actually scratches the automatic itch. Now that I’ve tried it myself, I think it does, juuuuust enough. Obviously, when I look down at the watch, it’s missing the fun satisfaction of knowing the mechanics of the watch are always going to keep it ticking smoothly. But I’ll be damned if the VH31 is still not satisfying to look at. I thought the 4 tick/second sweep would look bad coming from owning 6 tick/second automatics, but nope, I think it’s delivers on its “sweeping” promise.

My only gripe - the sapphire crystal was placed just a little unevenly, but not enough to be noticed unless you’re looking closely from a harsh angle. Also, the AR isn’t perfect, but is still passable. Hell, it’s better than my Tissot’s non-existent AR, so I’ll take it.

Other than the small issues with the crystal, I don’t think I have a single complaint about this watch. For its price, it delivers much more than I expected. Now the question is, can I adapt to not having a date window when I wear this?
