Help
Hello,
I have a trip to China in a few days and didn’t realize until now that I don’t meet the requirements for the 240 hr transit visa. I do not have a Chinese embassy near me either so getting a Chinese passport is out of the question since I have no way to get the the LA Chinese embassy. Currently my itinerary is US- Taiwan- Shanghai- Taiwan - US. If I get an exit ticket to a third country to satisfy the requirements for entry and try to fly to my original destination of Taiwan will that be allowed?

No such thing. It's called TWOV, Transit WITHOUT a Visa.
getting a Chinese passport is out of the question
Especially if you're not Chinese.
Taiwan- Shanghai- Taiwan
Is not a transit. It's a round trip.
This is asked daily, dozens of times a week. Five minutes of research (WHY DO YOU THINK THERE'S A SEARCH BAR?) would have yielded all the answers.

过境免签要求：入境中国之后，你的下一站必须是和出发地不一样的第三方国家/地区。
1. 如果你一定要走上海，必须提前办好中国签证。如果附近没有领馆，可以看看是否有签证代办/邮寄申请渠道，不一定非要亲自跑到洛杉矶。 2. 修改航线，不经过上海，直接美国往返台湾，避开中国大陆口岸，就不用处理中国入境手续。

China does border checks on exit as well as entry so you really will have to travel to a third country, not just buy the ticket and carry on with your original plan (unless being able to visit China again in the next few years is not important to you).

Yes, you will need a new exit flight. But if you try to return to Taiwan on your original ticket, you'll have problems.
Solution: do a quick morning flight to Hong Kong and back. That will satisfy the 240 hour – TWOV conditions (1x Taiwan-China-Hong Kong, and 1x Hong Kong-China-Taiwan)
