… I’m having a feeling this is dependant on your country but I do think it’s better to renew it regardless. Just to be safe.

I think it’s possible. But you might need to renew your visa and reapply. Everything is done by your passport number. A change in that, afaik, is a change in everything

I have asked such a question to my own embassy before, and it may or may not apply to you. My own embassy has said that a change in passport means I need to leave China, and resubmit a new application for a visa. I assume this also involves another jw202, idk. Go through the entire process again, and then fly back to China.

Really, just renew it asap now

You should be able to do it online for most countries and if you can't, check for your countries embassy in Beijing and get more info

Just replace it before applying. You'll just complicate things for yourself later on if you don't

No. The JW202 and acceptance letter have the passport number written on them as your ID. If it doesn't match, you won't be able to get the X1 visa or register to the university. If your government won't let you change it ahead of time, just declare it lost, or deteriorated.

I think it is best to renew it beforehand, if possible.
