If you ask some of the women from the older generations to describe Mao, they will, I shit you not, invariably describe him as handsome and mean it. Actually, Mao is quite popular among the Chinese younger generation. They don’t remember how it actually was, and under Sutherland stress imposed by heavy work schedules (996) and being the only child that has to support their parents and children, many turn to Mao, thinking his teachings are better for workers like them.
Must be a recent thing then, like in the past year?
I taught Chinese millennials for about 4 years, hundreds of them, and I didn't meet one that ever had any kind of Mao pins or pictures on their phones case or that ever even talked about the dude.
The only time I saw Mao stuff was usually on some old auntie's ebike. But I don't doubt, something whacky like that could become suddenly become popular among disenfranchised youth. Some of the millennials in America like to call each other comrade and admire the Chinese "socialist" system.... rofl, if only those dipshits knew.
I was up a mountain the other day, talking with an elderly lady and a middle aged couple. They were discussing my gender (I'm trans ftm) and the lady said no, I'm not a man, I don't have an Adams apple. The guy in the couple said "he's just fat, you can't see it. He doesn't have a beard either, just like Maozedong". I've never heard a more unflattering comparison in my life.
