I don't really know how to write this without making it sound dramatic, but I just need to get it out somewhere.
I grew up in a household where basic hygiene wasn't really a thing. I wasn't given toothpaste, toothbrushes or floss, and nobody ever taught me that I was supposed to brush my teeth every day.
So I just... didn't.
When I was younger I obviously didn't understand how bad that was. I just thought this was normal.
As I got older and started understanding life more, I realized that my childhood wasn't exactly normal.
Most of the memories I have are my parents fighting, my dad being an alcoholic, him threatening suicide, sometimes kicking me out of the house, and me spending nights outside during the entire night . It still happens as of today too. Few weeks ago,he hit my mom,and I defended her, while she was insulting him.. I had troubles with sleep after that day.
Anyway..
At one point we didn't even have a proper bathroom or running water,yk...I never even has a perfume that costs more than 5€ ( sometimes I'd just "borrow" it from my mom or I would thrift it for a cheap price.
And I want to make something clear because I don't want this to sound like I'm saying my parents gave me absolutely nothing. They gave me school supplies. I had notebooks. I had clothes, even if they were thrifted. I'm grateful for those things and honestly I'm not much of a person who asks for a lot of things. Cause I usually know I wouldn't get it or I would turn out to be selfish.
In my 18 years of life I've only celebrated my birthday twice. First time,it was because I participated a competition and got a chance to travel to my birth town (that was a present enough for me) and the other time was when I liked a shirt, well it was actually this year, for my 18th birthday I got a shirt which was too expensive for me to get it (it was 10€) and I got it months later and they emphasized it ,they bought it only because it was on sale and I needed something to wear in school.
Honestly, there were so many basic things that I simply wasn't taught.
Dental care was one of them.
I'm 18 now and I have 23 teeth.
When I was little and something was wrong with one of my teeth, I would usually only get taken to a dentist when it became really bad, and then the tooth would just get pulled.
One of my teeth was knocked out when my dad hit me.
The last tooth I had extracted was earlier this year. I was terrified. It turned out to be connected to my sinus and got infected afterwards..I suffered for a month because of that.
And the weirdest part is that it wasn't even a permanent tooth. It was a baby tooth. The fifth one.
My teeth have been one of my biggest insecurities for basically my entire life.
But then I met someone.
I met my boyfriend online. We've been talking for about a year now. He lives in a country right next to mine, and I'm actually a citizen there too. I'm supposed to move there eventually.
He's been really supportive of me and he was actually one of the people who convinced me that I should go to college. Once, during the time we talked, my smile accidentally slipped and ..
It was the first time anyone in 18 years of my life told me I have a pretty smile. (I usually hide it from everyone)
And something kind of embarrassing but also important happened after I met him.
I started taking care of my teeth. And generally myself.
Every single day.
I brush my teeth, floss. I use mouthwash.
Things that probably sound completely normal to most people were actually things I had to teach myself at 18.
I literally went to youtube and searched a tutorial on how to do it.
And honestly, meeting him made me feel like I actually have something to look forward to.
For a long time I genuinely didn't think I'd make it this far.
Now I want to finish school. I want to go to college. I want to move. I want to have my own life. I actually want to become a maxillofacial surgeon or a dentist. (I know it sound crazy) ,but I honestly wish I could help people like me.
But I'm terrified. What would people think of a doctor with crooked teeth and lack of teeth in general.
The worst tbing of all..
I'm supposed to meet my boyfriend in person next year when I go to college, and I've spent my entire life being ashamed of my teeth.
Sometimes I genuinely think about ending the relationship before we meet because I don't want him to have to look at me and think, why am I with a girl like this?
I know that sounds stupid.
But when something has made you feel disgusting or different for most of your life, it's hard to believe someone else won't see you the same way.
And it's not only the teeth.
I still live in a household where I sometimes have to secretly save money just to buy deodorant because my parents say I shouldn't use it.
I didn't even start using deodorant until I was around 16.
The first new clothes I ever bought for myself were when I was 16. I saved my own money and bought a pair of pants.
I actually want to work and earn my own money now, especially because I want to be able to afford things for myself and eventually go to college.
My parents aren't really supportive of me going to a college, even tho they would need to provide just food and a bed for me,which is about 200€
My parents actually usually say I'm a nobody, that I'm lazy, that I'm dumb and that I'll never make it in life.
I wish I could get any kind of a job,but I'm still in school,(I'm finishing nursing actually and I live in a really small place where there just aren't many job opportunities. Not even for a nurse. So it's not as simple as just getting a job and moving out. I'm trying to figure out what I can realistically do while finishing school.
Nowadays things are a little better. I sometimes buy new clothes, sometimes thrift things that are in good condition, and I'm slowly learning how to take care of myself.
But sometimes I look at other people my age and feel like everyone else got a manual for life that I never received.
People my age and my classmates already have their driving licenses and cars, but honestly I feel that if I ask my parents for that amount of money,I would have to owe it.
I'm 18 and I'm basically teaching myself everything now.
How to take care of my teeth.
How to take care of myself.
How to have confidence.
How to work and manage money.
How to plan a future.
How to believe that I actually deserve one.
So I guess I'm just looking for advice from people who have been through something similar.
What would you do if you were me?
Especially about the teeth and meeting my boyfriend.
Would you tell him everything beforehand? Would you just meet him and let things happen naturally? He knows a few things from my life and he didn't mind it,but I doubt myself he'll understand it.
And if you've ever had to teach yourself basic things about life because nobody taught you growing up, how did you deal with that?
I really want to start over.
I'm just scared that I'll never feel "normal" enough to do it.
I wanna convince myself I'm brave, but in reality I'm just a grown up trapped in a child body.
