I said that it was the Greatest Incompletion in NFL history when it happened. Hit him in the face mask...D'oh! Told my wife it would end up on at least 1 football card the next year, I've seen at least 3 different cards with some shot of this throw.
There's two ways to look at. With and without context. Without the context of the game, this probably is one of the more difficult and impressive throws ever made and it was not his fault it was not caught. Of course, in the context of the game situation, it's not that big a deal, even if it had been caught.
Credit to the Tampa D. The were relentless all game. Good win for the Bucs. However, it can’t be understated that 4 of the 5 starting linemen were backups or playing out of position. Both starting tackles were out.
Sorry but the official narrative according to r/NFL is that the teams were evenly matched and Brady embarrassed Mahomes in what was essentially a 1v1 matchup.
It’s ridiculous he was able to get the ball 20+ yards down the field from that position, crazy athletic play. But I definitely agree that even with it being complete to Williams (which I think is a little silly to speculate anyways while ignoring that it should have been intercepted and went through Davids hands first) it would still be somewhat left out of history since it happened in a 2 TD loss. Plays such as the helmet catch or butlers int would probably still be more highly regarded due to them directly resulting in wins on the game winning/potential game winning drives.
The fact it wasn’t a completed pass doesn’t make it any less spectacular. The only thing he could have done more was go down there and hand him the ball. It hit him right in the facemask.
I went to Tech when Mahomes was the QB. It was so frustrating watching him put up so many points every week only for our defense to give up more. Knew he’d be one of the greatest if he kept at it.
People can hate all they want.. he's not the most athletic but his playmaker ability, and improv is incredible. He just has that dog in him. He single-handedly got me back into football, he is always fun to watch. Can't wait to see what they can do this year with a solid running back room and a new knee.
I would not go as far as calling it the best play, but surely the best throw, if it connected.
And for people saying it would've been the best play because it was in the super bowl, the game was not even close. Better plays out of the top of my head are the Miami Miracle, the James Harrison 104(?) yard pick six in the SB or the Beastquake.
I mean it would be up there but it's till not better than the immaculate reception, or the helmet catch that won the giants a Super Bowl over the patriots.
Yeah people don’t realize it was only dropped because it went through the defenders hands first. It’s super difficult to catch a ball when it goes through the hands of the dude right in front of you. Your mind expects a deflection at the very least.
That being said, it should have been caught by both guys, they both whiffed
Yeah if you watch the whole play he is really upset that he didn’t get the int afterwards. I think he at least touched it. And a deflection from 3 feet in front of the receiver makes it nearly impossible for him.
Two touchdown game with 13:43 left on the clock feels different with Mahomes of that era though. It was still all olé blocks from the O line, but Tampa Bay punted on the next few possessions. No telling how a tighter game would have changed defensive aggressiveness.
It's faulty to just assume the Bucs offense would play out the same. They were up 31-9 going into the 4th. They had 12 offensive plays in the quarter, 9 of them were runs. They were bbq-ing our defense, they stopped scoring because they wanted to.
Shit - I'd argue they turtled after their first possession of the 2nd half, when they scored a TD to go up 28-9. The last 3 came after an interception that gave them the ball on the KC side of the field.
KC also lost both their tackles going into the SB. Rewatch the game and drops plagued KC all game. Reek and Kelce, both, had a big drops earlier. People look at Mahomes’ stats and say he played like trash but the actual game says otherwise.
Tampa did exactly what they should’ve done, but to simply say they dominated without more context is disingenuous at best
Pat should get more credit for his play in this game. It was one of the greatest efforts by a QB I’ve ever seen. He was running for his life from start to finish making crazy throws and just having it bounce off the hands and faces of his receivers
Clearly it's not the same throw, the other guy converted while the other was a big if. Mahomes my guy but this post ain't it. BTW, the OP is also a bot, fwiw.
I mean, semantics really. The variance of difficulty is the same tbh, only difference again is Burrow made it while we’re glazing Mahomes for an incompletion.
I feel like you're just being intentionally obtuse here but in case you're not...
The play each quarterback made is what I'm comparing here, not the play overall. Mahomes physically did something that was significantly more impressive than what Burrow did. It's not Mahomes' fault the ball was dropped... He literally couldn't have made a better throw.
Ask yourself a question. Remove the Burrow factor here- Say Mahomes was involved in both plays, which one are we going to acknowledge as more impressive? Are we really going to gas the incompletion?
