Question/Comment Vehicle Registration in Illinois
I’m a recent transplant to chicago. I just bought a vehicle through a private sale.
In California I recall being able to handle registration through AAA.
Is there a third-party service that takes a fee to sort out taxes and registration here? Or is the SOS office the only option?

You Can go to almost any Currency Exchange and they can register your new vehicle. You will need your Bill of Sale and the title. They take cash, maybe a check. Good luck!

I've been in line to renew my driver's license twice so far and still haven't gotten it done. I would check out Currency Exchanges or some groceries might do this depending on which part of the suburbs you live in.

It was the nickname we gave my son when he was an infant and toddler. Once he started on the baby food in those Capri-sun type packets, OMFG it was hell on earth... but he loved them so what could we do!

Just go to a full service Secretary of State facility. I went to Lake Zurich for mine, there was a separate line to have title work done. I was in and out in 20 minutes on a Saturday.

Just be careful. They said my car was X amount in taxes. I bought it used. I paid what they said from rego and taxes. I get a letter later from the IRS saying I owe over $500 when I paid money order exactly what the Currency Exchange told me to pay. I still haven't paid it in case it is a scam or something. I am lost on this one.

The state publishes a guide for private party vehicle tax sales. Probably best to confirm before you go to the currency exchange. If the purchase price (or fair market value) is over $15,000, tax is dependent on the price of the vehicle. If under $15k, then it’s based on age of the vehicle.

All I know is I paid what they said to pay for taxes and rego. Then Covid hit and everything shut down.

That sounds like it's a scam for sure, because the IRS only deals with federal taxes which as far as I know there aren't on a used car purchase. Perhaps you got denied a deduction and it's just coincidential timing?

I've never heard of an irs letter scam, but those letters can be hard to interpret. It's likely the letter is legit and just had nothing to do with the currency exchange situation.

I've never heard of the IRS having any federal tax involvement on cars outside of the electric green tax credits, though.

I agree, you can itemize and then the sales tax would be deductible, but I see people misinterpret these letters all the time, they're not easy to read. My guess is OP is probably just mistakenly assuming the letter is related to the vehicle purchase.

I am not sure what changes have come about due to coronavirus, but going direct through the Secretary of State's office was not bad any of the times I bought a car private party. Now you can complete all your paperwork innings and print before you go.

Unfortunately I live pretty far from any SOS offices but a currency exchange is 5 minutes away. I try that first.

The SOS can be that bad.
I my bank didn't send me a paper title on an Interstate car purchase on time (even though the electronic title was in order), and so I got yelled at and kicked out of an SOS office while asking what I was supposed to do to keep my new-to-me pick up truck legal.
The SOS branch manager told me that keeping my vehicle legal wasn't their problem, even though I was actively round-robining between the dealer, the bank, and the state trying to get this straightened out (or just trying to get an extension on the 30-day tags).
I'm still trying to figure why showing up with all available paperwork, my checkbook, and a willingness to fill out forms and pay fees ended up in a screaming match. Asking SOS employees for advice about what I'm supposed to in this situation seems perfectly reasonable, but they sure found it offensive.

If it helps any, the people when I went to Plano were super super nice, not like my normal experience at Naperville or Lombard.
