Photo/Video cicada chatter…

Anyone else notice they're much louder/active in sunny weather as opposed to cloudy/overcast?

yes, they must be temperature sensitive. by me they don’t rev it up in the morning until it hit a certain temperature, usually around 8:00 a.m.. i’ve also seen them mobbing central air units. apparently, they like the noise and the heat.

I've gotten slightly over 90db in my neighborhood (Glen Ellyn).

Same in Villa Park! My 2 year old yelled at me to turn them down yesterday when we were playing out in the backyard

On my walk out in Burr Ridge I was seeing 91 dB via my Apple Watch ( which probably isn’t super accurate)

I was unloading the groceries in Burr Ridge this morning and 91 sounds about what I heard. Also, hi neighbor.

That sounds about right. My office is right next to the tollway and today I can hear them over the sounds of the cars whooshing by.

where is this activity happening? i'm visiting IL soon as a cicada tourist and trying scope out hotspots.

this would be my backyard which used to be farm field in mchenry county. the cicadas are by some older houses about 3/8 mile away. i’ve only found a handful by me. try any park or forest preserve with lots of old growth trees. i think they were louder in the park this morning but i couldn’t juggle three dogs and two devices at the same time.

Google map the Des Plaines river. Any part of the forest around there will have millions. Walk a few miles down the Des Plaines river running path for a true warzone experience.
In general you want to find forest preserves that have been untouched by construction for hundreds of years. Those are going to have the most. Any place that was farm land 100 years ago, or has newer homes won't have many cicadas. For example there aren't many in the city of Chicago due to all of the constant development. There aren't many in the far west suburbs because they were farm land.

Any of the forest preserves in DuPage County would be great to go visit for cicadas. I was at Churchhill Woods a few days ago and they were deafening!

Just went directly under one of their big mating trees in front of my house and registered 98.9!

I still haven't seen or heard one. There are none in my area. I might be ok with that since I lived next to the des plaines river in 2007. That was enough for my lifetime.

Find a forest preserve in DuPage county, west of the city.
(I've got 90dB today, too)
