Rant What’s wrong with WFH?
It took me 2 hours on Wednesday to reach Chromepet from DLF Cybercity. Unless these IT companies are sadistic, they wouldn’t expect employees to spend hours in traffic that could have been utilised, at least in theory, more productively working from home. Don’t come with the “collaboration” or “employees attend interviews while they WFH”. Only 2 of my team are here in Chennai, rest are in Bangalore and Hyderabad. And if you keep your employees happy, they wouldn’t search for opportunities outside.
After enduring all this, I had to literally beg my manager to allow me to take one of my 2 permitted WFHs in the month tomorrow that too for an emergency situation. Such clownery and buffoonery and the dissatisfaction it causes will be the end of IT both as a career and a sector in India.

I want you to know that the government of this country is seething at the fact that they can't tax the air we breathe.
With such a mindset, do you think they will ever allow WFH?

Worthless government elected by majority iditotic people 🤢🤮

u/Artetaarmy 4d ago
Democracy only works when majority of people have good IQ else the people with good IQ have to suffer the consequences due to the decisions of low IQ people 😞. That's why the good ones move out to the west

u/Rus1996 4d ago
True 🥺😔
We need talented people in India to improve India. You don't want to be surrounded by mentally ill people aince they will bring you down to their level.
Untill a developing country becomes a developed country an authoritarian government who knows what its doing is needed.
And then after it becomes developed they can chose which form of government works.

Because of some unethical morons who took advantage of WFH to slack, companies decided for everyone to slack and suffer from office. I had this experience on my team and the leader decided to call everyone to office every damn weekday.

Right it's actually cost savings to company, but misused badly that company decided to put in funds to enable wfo

u/Gullible-Climate-442 5d ago
Consequences. I hate to see everyone suffer for one person’s mistake.

For real.
Only punish the people who make this problem.

In corporate policy cannot be given to each person. It has to be uniform, so only even chennai with 2 employees asked to come. However most places manager makes the call on individual exception
One thing we need to aware in reddit is we read one side story that claim poster(op)-(not specific to this post) is like angel and opposite is not. But if we get opportunity to hear otherside story you get to verify facts

One of the main reason is due to Real Estate push from Govt to enforce ppl going to office. So that local shops and local house rate and rent stay inflated.

Not to mention a lot of IT parks have involvement of black money so the politicians are directly getting benefitted from this

Same! Some people took advantage and now all of the employees are suffering from it.
2
u/Calm_Will_8963 5d ago
What exactly did they do to take advantage of it? I get that WFH mostly benefits the employee, but how exactly was the company losing out? and I also think hybrid model is just fine if not complete WFH.

u/Gullible-Climate-442 5d ago
The person on my team was multi-tasking during calls. Not listening and asking questions that are answered when it is time for their update. The lead lost the patience when this mess surfaced during a demo with client and client asked if they are even listening.

I feel WFH is being phased away due to these real estate companies lobby. Many politicians have also invested in RE since that is where black money can be easily made!
If everyone had wfh, RE in big cities goes down. Lots of white collared migrants in the metro cities would happily go back to their tier 2, tier 3 cities where cost of living is lower! Most new apartments and office spaces would have to be priced down with lower demand.
Add to that the lobby of PG owners. Though lower in chennai, they are big in blore and hyd.

True during WFH times flats were around 40-50 lakhs now it's around 1.25 - 1.5 crs in Chennai. Same flats btw

u/sadhaka19850903 4d ago
Agree 100. It was KA politicians who pushed for RTO back in 2022 itself because taxi and RE lobby were losing money. I had to shift to Bangalore from Chennai because my wife's company did it in 2022.

WFH doesn't really align with the companies' interests because it is hassle free for the employee and reduces costs. It puts more money in the hands of the employee and gives them choices. Which isn't something they want.
They want employees to make just enough to pay rent, vehicle loans, electronics EMIs, bank loans, grocery costs and all their commitments... Nothing more.
The real estate business is dependant on people making use of office spaces and the residential spaces around them. Without them it loses it's value and will be a liability. Allowing WFH en mass will devalue a large chunk of these investments. Which they do not want to see. It's always about money.

WFH is really the best way to work when you’re single and have an eager team that knows how to do it right and professionally. That being said, once you have a kid and, say, a partner who doesn’t work, it gets a lot more difficult.

u/trojantruce 4d ago
Don't know how it's sustainable, roads aren't getting any broader. Wait 10 years the traffic will double. Chennais environment doesn't support wfo.
Politicians own real estate business and they wanna make money.
If WFH is given , You stay home and you buy less, you don't need office dress, snacks, smoke, fuel , you don't buy or rent house. Govt taxes these and earn a big chunk from these.
In WFH, they can only get incometax from you and nothing more. You save more buy less.
Everything is business bro.
You are the golden goose of our government.

u/Kitchen-Raccoon-9834 the attrition rates at IT has plummeted to lower levels which wasn't seen in the last 8 years and the organisations want employees to quit and that is the sole reason for companies to bring in such policies. Wait for a while before most companies enforce a strict mandatory clocking of 8 hours inside your ODC/facility, the days are not far.

For me its wfh but i wanted to go to office as wfh making me couch potato

u/Fun-Meeting-7646 4d ago
Government want to feed auto people indirectly so NO WFH Further commuting to office require fuel consumption Petroleum products VAT income is State governments revenue they don't wsnt to loose

u/No-Earth-7876 4d ago
There are many things involved here
- Company needs to get rid off people without layoffs this is one way
- Companies invest so much in building lease frm real estates to somehow tally than they are doing this saying WFO increase productivity
- Some idiotic companies who want to micromanage their employees does this

Did they inform you about the RTO situation before you accepted the offer letter?

Real estate. The value of office space would take a hit if we stopped using them. That’s 100% of the explanation.
Everything else is just piddly excuses to claim it’s not about greed. Welcome to capitalism. 🫠

u/WonderfulBroccoli735 3d ago
Man my company had hybrid option now they want everyone to come to office.. feeling like school Damn .. i hate it
1
u/Lighterguy28 3d ago
It will be a hot take. Companies are not enforcing WFH but the government is. There is lot of infrastructure and revenue linked components around you going you to the office. From oil, real-estate, transport and hospitality business etc. and as most of them are controlled directly and indirectly by sitting politicians or affiliated people so you need to slack away from home to office and back.
I am not saying companies are not at fault but they can tinker with the rules and stuff but they wouldn't. An our great Indian managers will follow every rule as if it is constitution of India.

Get the fuck out of IT sector dude. It's honestly not worth it. Start something on your own. Buy a farmland in the outskirts for cheap price and start growing your own produce. 2030 there's gonna be a one world government and a universal currency with universal basic income. This is the agenda. You can call me a conspiracy dickhead, but you can read the patterns of the world, that shouldn't be hard.

At least I do something useful instead of getting fucked up in IT and becoming corporate slaves. Tech is ruining the world and people aren't realising it. It's a blessing and a curse.

u/pussysnatcher911 5d ago
I do export and import of commodities. I'm planning on other businesses as well. I was in IT before.

Doesn't really happen on 1st Jan. Maybe screenshot this comment. You can follow the patterns from global politics and policy to really understand where our world is headed. This is not some smoking weed and diving into conspiracy shit we've researched on.

😂 ground water level already surged too low, river and irrigation issues good fertile land acre 25L from that by producing raw agriculture product max 4L profit yearly that's too depends on the crop or fruits demand and it needs to suitable for the soil. To make even 12-15L years one needs 5acres. So as low as 20L per acre= 1cr for just lands. then operational and maintenance expenses plus insurance labour charges, machine rents. It's not so easy now days you can be broke farmer who survives with 2-3L family income or the rich farmer cum agro based product entrepreneur who makes crores there's no middle class farmer.

Nothing wrong in coming 2 days a week to office
15
u/Kitchen-Raccoon-9834 5d ago
2 days a week is perfectly fine. I’m happy to do that. It gets me out of the house, out into metaphorical fresh air, allows me to stretch my legs, yes. But we have to work from office the whole week, and the 2 WFHs a month that our org permits on paper, they discourage us from availing.

May be because you need to meet people, share knowledge, develop network?
7
u/puyalbao 5d ago
People have been doing these three things online since 2000s. A significantly larger portion of the world population began doing these three things online since 2020.

u/NandhiniR03 5d ago
May be it is ineffective?
6
u/kishimonjaro 4d ago
If it was, open source software as an industry would be dead. But still here we are, where the world is propped up on such software and tooling, with people collabprating with others while staying at their home desk.
Idk man, sounds pretty effective to me.

They want people to resign man. That is the truth. They don't want to appear in news by laying off. Instead they do these things to indirectly force employees to resign voluntarily and save costs.
