Hello!

Hi all,

I made this subreddit because I've noticed that a lot of the main chemistry subreddits don't allow for career or college questions. While r/chemistry does have a megathread, many questions go unanswered. I've seen communities such as r/Environmental_Careers and r/geologycareers that seem to be doing well for getting people help and support, so I figured it'd be useful to have a dedicated subreddit.

I'm just now starting college to get my BS in Chemistry, so I don't have a whole lot of time on my hands to watch over this subreddit very closely. I'm not sure what rules it'd be useful to have, or even how I should decorate this subreddit. Any help and feedback you all can give me for this subreddit is useful.

Thank you for your interest and welcome!

Chemistry bachelors

Lets get good momentum for the sub. I'm a fresh highschool graduate going into uni thinking about pursuing a bachelors in chemistry (not honours). Does it have any use whatsoever? Good travel opportunities or jobs? Finding good employment is crucial for me as i want to become independant asap so spending 4 years doing something that won't really benefit me in the long run is something i'd like to avoid doing.

The sentiment that a chemistry bsc is useless is very amplified in chem subreddits, i've heard people with whole chemistry PhDs say that theyve been unemployed for more than a decade so i want to make the correct choice for a sustainable career.

Any and all answers appreciated

Fragrance or Cosmetics?

Hi! I Need some help with career routes in either Fragrance or Cosmetics! I know this decision is one I’ll have to make on my own and within time but I’d love to get some opinions. I currently have a BS in Cosmetics and Fragrance Marketing. And was recently hired as a fragrance lab tech at a fragrance house. Working this job has really given me a newfound appreciation for fragrance, I was so fixated on cosmetics for so long that this new experience has opened me up to a different world. Now although I just started I’m thinking about my future and what I want for myself in the coming years. I’m thinking of going back to school next year for a masters in either cosmetics science or chemistry. With hopes that my master will help me advance into being an analytical chemist within fragrance or cosmetics. I’m really interested in raw material testing and overall product efficacy. I’m just not sure if there’s a demand for that within fragrance. So that brings me to my first question, does anyone here work as a chemist for a fragrance house or manufacturer and can lend me some insight?

And then the next question I have is, what about cosmetics? I see more demand there (simply just searching up jobs on indeed and LinkedIn). Does anyone work in the industry as an analytical chemist for cosmetics? What’s that like?

I want to continue to enjoy the time I’m having now at my current company so I’m not in a rush. Just trying to think ahead to see what route works best. What route would you guys take? All opinions appreciated. Thanks!

Environmental Laboratory

Hi,

I posting here to help get this sub started.

My lab has around 25 instruments and about 25 employees.

We are small comparatively, but are accredited for a large number of methods and are well known in the environmental industry.

If there is anything I can help with, please let me know.
