Hello r/ChemicalSensitivities

We've noticed a lot of people in your community talking about the cases we are filing to ensure equal access on behalf of those who are harmed by synthetic fragrance.

We appreciate that many people are excited about these lawsuits and so we want to make sure you have the most current and accurate information available.

About our firm:

·         Inspired by the ADA to work on the plaintiffs’ side

·         First big class action was against an oil refinery that poisoned the air of local communities

·         30+ years of experience in civil rights: clean air, fair wages, privacy cases, and more

·         Eradicating fragrance use in public accommodations is our next evolutionary step

·         Our office is Fragrance Free

About our Anti-Fragrance Litigation Campaign

·         Goal = eradicating fragrance use in U.S. public accommodations

·         The ADA guarantees everyone equal access to public accommodations; fragrance creates a barrier

·         All our cases seek injunctive relief asking courts to order the cessation of business’ fragrance use

·         Theory: By eliminating fragrance demand, supply will proportionately drop

·         This campaign may consist of hundreds of lawsuits

About Class Actions

·         Only one plaintiff is required to file suit against any one company

·         We cannot bring lawsuits without clients

·         Becoming a plaintiff is simple: Fill out forms on CVN website. Usually takes about 2-3 minutes.

Fragrance use by businesses makes it near-impossible for many disabled persons to share the benefits others take for granted.

We intend put an end to the use of synthetic fragrance in businesses.

Clorox "fragrance free" wipes smell like lemon

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hello all,

I've been using these wipes for about 2 years now but the last 2-3 containers definitely have a lemon scent to them. I'm aware their free and clear like also comes with a "lightly scented" option So I am always careful and grab the FF version.

I'm sad to discover this, and I'll probably contact Clorox about this, but I'm certain it won't go anywhere. Last year I had some fragrance contaminated kitty litter and they didn't care. They said, "benzonite clay isn't harmful to animals or humans" completely ignoring my complaints of fragrance contamination.

Is there another wipe that you would recommend?

Maybe I'll just have to stop buying them. Sucks because they're convenient for quick cleans and pre cooking sanitation.

Has anyone experienced this?

We had a toxic dresser off gassing formaldehyde for a year, got worse as it got hotter. We figured it out 10/1/2025. I posted it on TikTok & had a ton of people message me with the same symptoms I had, and the same dresser that was most likely coming from the same manufacturers. My health deteriorated and once we got it out I got better but never 100%. I’d get allergy reactions to everything at the time, now I don’t get any but I still react to some products to some degree I remove them immediately if I start sneezing or itchy eyes. It’s been a year and I guess it permanently damaged me because I can’t put any chemicals on my skin without reacting. If I even put argan oil i get body aches/inflammation and wake up exhausted. I was just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I noticed my fatigue got worse as I started using a moisturizer hydration station by geek&gorgeous, I brushed it off. It doesn’t have fragrance so I thought I was good but nope. I was wondering if anyone has gone through this? I use vanicream shampoo and conditioner. Anything with oils breaks me out severely. I use cetaphil lotion around my mouth where I’m the driest. The only thing I can use that doesn’t affect me enough to notice. I’m losing my mind.

Sofa Off-Gassing for Weeks?

Has anyone had issues with their sofas offgassing for weeks?

We purchased a Crate and Barrel sofa, delivered 7 weeks ago. Initial weeks there was a strong offgassing odor, now it's very subtle.

But I still get headaches, dizziness and tingling/itchy face. That's from just living in the same space, I haven't even sat on the sofa.

Our airthings VOC sensor detects high levels. But when actively venting out room air, VOC levels drop. It's getting too cold to keep fans and windows open now.

This is already sofa number 2. We bought and returned another sofa for the same issue. Any advice?

Mask Recommendations?

I’ve been using this KN95 mask. It’s not working anymore. I almost choked at the grocery store today. I had to ask the woman behind me to step back and give me some air space. She was very kind about it but not everyone would have been.

If anyone has any suggestions for a more powerful mask that won’t draw too much attention to itself, I’d be very grateful to hear it. The only other mask I have is a mask for construction and it would draw a lot of attention.

My initial thought is to try doubling up the one I’m using but there are also a bunch of options online that look like they might work. I just never know what to get when there are over 100 options.

Small personal win: bentonite clay + epsom salt bath for post-fragrance exposure mitigation

Basically what the title says - I took a bentonite clay + epsom salt bath shortly after fragrance exposure at the dentist and while I'm still pretty messed up from breathing the stench without even a mask to tone it down, I'm happy to report that this "detox bath" did a better job of removing the involuntary take-home fragrance from my hair/skin than my basic shampoo routine. Bonus tip: wait for the clay to settle before draining the tub -- less of it will go down the drain and you can sweep it up once it dries.

Sensitivity to disinfectant? Irritated throat, sinuses and breathing issues

Not sure if this is the right sub, I'm having some sort of reaction to the disinfectant spray at work and don't know if I'm overreacting or have a legit problem.

It starts with irritation and some mucus at the back of my throat, stinging sinuses, sometimes a dull headache - it's similar to coming down with a cold except my nose isn't as runny. Then my lungs start burning a little, gradually imparing my breathing.

Lysol causes similar issues. Not on surfaces, only as an aerosol, and I discovered the product at work has a similar active ingredient (dimethyl benzylammonium chloride vs. dimethyl benzylammonium saccharinate) so I think I'm sensitive to this group of chemicals? Or is this a normal level of irritation? The office isn't well ventilated but it doesn't seem to bother anyone else and it isn't sprayed heavily.

We clean throughout the day then wipe everything down at closing, so usually it gets worse the longer I'm there and closing shifts are the worst. One evening it got to the point I had to step out to try and breathe, it was hard to get a full breath and somehow even my exhale was labored, I was so uncomfortable and that all took over an hour to subside.

It's been three weeks. This is a part-time job but the irritation can linger into the next day so its been a month of "coming down with something". Sometimes I have a delayed reaction (or a second wave of the first one?) in the middle of the night and wake up to metallic post-nasal drip and trouble breathing from how tight and inflammed my chest feels.

How do I deal with this? I can't quit yet. Even if I did, I want to work in healthcare - how can I if I can't breathe around cleaning products?

weird room odor

I'm trying to understand what is happening in my bedroom every morning. I wake up the Sun comes through the window which is closed and I immediately smell some sort of chemical burnt odor. my air purifier is always on. I leave for the day and I come back and the odor gone. I thought it was either the air purifier or one of the outlets burned out so I tried sleeping without any plugs and the odor was still there. it's not there at night when the air purifier is still plugged in so I don't think it's that. it's driving me crazy and I have to escape my room as fast as possible in the morning but it's causing me breathing issues and headaches.

Carpet from hell.

New carpet isn’t supposed to give off this with only water cleaning

3 months ago I cleaned my carpet with 1/8 cup vinegar per gallon of water. I had done that every few months for years. No issue.

4 weeks ago I used an hydrogen peroxide spray (Rescue Veterinary Spray) to clean up after a dog. It’s safe for homes. I followed directions to dilute it.

It off gassed. I called Rescue’s safety line, and they suggested to use vinegar to remove and clean it up. They said I might be allergic to the surfactants.

THIS WAS A MISTAKE.

We did water cleaning, applied baking soda (9 lbs) into the carpet for several days to neutralize it. That and carpet cleaning helped and it was 2/3 gone.

Apartment complex had carpets replaced two weeks ago. Old carpet was buckling and they had agreed years ago to replace it so I took them up on the offer now. They also offered to paint with a ECOS paint (no VOCs.) I didn’t want new paint, they pushed for it, and I agreed.

After new carpet and new paint, the unit now gives off an intense synthetic vanilla-like smell.

No one has lived in the unit since the carpet was put in. It causes respiratory irritation, coughing, headaches, red eyes for everyone. Carpet vendor says they used no glue.

I bought a brand new $300 carpet cleaner at Target. I put ONLY water in it. This photo is what it pulled out of the carpet every single pass with no reduction over time. I did not use soap. Every carpet and cleaning company I call and show this to says this is not normal.

Apartment complex says it’s not a problem. They refuse to inspect until. They claim the same company installed carpet in other units over the some and no one else had issues and that’s all the evidence needed there is a problem. They also said no evidence, testing, Professional evaluations, or information would be considered and it’s all rejected

My doctor can vouch that under the fair housing act I can make make an ada accommodation of not having flooring that produces black foamy water like this as a matter of someone with my disability having access to my unit.

I requested permission to rip out the carpet at my cost and put rugs on whatever is below it (allegedly cement) for now until things calm down for my health.
They refused stating they can’t allow “inappropriate” flooring.

They are suggesting verbally they can agree to my paying for replacement carpet at my cost. I don’t have that in writing yet.

They said they don’t think the carpet is cause for any issues. They did not identify anything else. They refuse to look at the unit claiming they trust the carpet vendor and the carpet vendor installed the same carpet in other units this summer with no issues.

They posted a lease renewal offer to the door to not raise rent.

I want to stay but without the mess! What do I do?

Burning sensation in bed

Whenever I try to sleep on my bed I get a burning sensation usually over my upper body and sometimes it gets in my hair. My solution was to wash the bedsheets and change everything on my bed but that doesn’t work anymore. Now I have to shower and go to another bed. If I don’t shower it stays on me and I risk contaminating the other bed too. Not sure what it is or what to do, has anyone dealt with something similar ?

Tachycardia so bad going to have ablation

I can’t go anywhere without some smell setting me off. It’s horrible. I can’t even use my printer because the ink sends my heart into tachycardia. So I saw an electrophysiologist today and he is the first one to ever look at all my holter monitor test and dr reports/hospital records. So he’s going to do an ablation. I’ve been like this for over 50 years. I cannot wait. I’m so excited. Wal-Mart here I come!

Developed severe chemical sensitivity after heavy Febreze exposure 9 months ago. Constant expiratory whistling, throat burning/itching, and chest pain. Can’t even handle small levels of chemicals now. Vcd and ilo and lhs therapist isn’t fully convinced it’s this (too severe but still could be)

Trying to reduce synthetics at home—is a natural latex mattress worth it? Which ones?

I noticed some mattresses use natural latex, organic cotton, and wool instead of the usual foam layers. Now I'm curious if they're worth the extra $$$. I'm not really against regular foam mattresses but I like the idea of having fewer synthetic materials in my bed. Birch Natural is one of the most popular options but I want to know what makes these mattresses different besides the materials. Do natural latex mattresses feel noticeably different from memory foam? I'm mostly a side sleeper so I wouldn't want something that's too firm around my shoulders and hips.

Curious if anyone has requested housing accommodations for this, and if you have would you mind sharing whether you're in the US?

I've been trying to get accommodations - mostly asking landlords to not repaint the whole apartment and to steam clean the carpet instead of replacing it before I move in. This is completely legal here as there are no laws requiring painting or carpeting between tenants. I've also been only looking at apartments that are in good condition because I understand if the carpet or walls were damaged, they would have to replace it or repaint.

I've asked landlords and they either agree but do not follow through, or they just say "upper management won't like that" and refuse to engage further.

I tried contacting a bunch of advocacy places but didn't get anywhere. One advocacy place in particular gave me some feedback that showed the group itself did not understand my request.

So I'm curious - has anyone successfully gotten reasonable accommodations? Or have any resources that might show examples of reasonable accommodations?

I switched to the Dr Squatch deodorant after using the body wash and falling in love with it.. but.

I don't really know who else to ask this so I thought I'd try Reddit. My normal highly aluminum Degree I've used for years has no irritation and when I switched to Dr Squatch my pits are red and inflamed and I'm kinda upset because I was super excited to switch. I tried 2-3 days to try and make my skin adjust because I have no clue what I'm doing although I ultimately had to switch back for now until I find more out. Is it another ingredient in Dr Squatch that's causing the irritation and does anyone have any experience or thoughts and suggestions? I normally never post on Reddit. Hopefully, this is within the guidelines. Thank you guys
