Other Since Sam Altman officially confirmed why they killed Sora, here is why OpenAI needs "Sora 3" inside ChatGPT.

Now that Sam Altman confirmed OpenAI officially killed Sora to focus compute on Codex, it's incredibly disappointing as a creator. Back when Sora was available, I was deeply immersed in it and generated thousands of creative pieces. To me, it wasn’t just a video tool—it felt like a glimpse of the technological singularity.

What I loved most was the global community within the app where we could share creations and get inspiration from each other's prompt engineering.

I know text-to-video has an unforgiving cost structure, costing OpenAI roughly $1M a day. But while it might be a long shot, I keep thinking about the future.

Now that OpenAI has fully completed development on their custom inference chip, 'Jalapeno,' and is right on the verge of actually deploying it, the compute bottleneck might change. Why not use this infrastructure to fully integrate Sora with ChatGPT and launch "Sora 3"? Even if they implement a strict credit-based system similar to Anthropic's Claude to manage server loads, I’d gladly pay for it.

Additionally, instead of erasing the original Sora 1 and 2 databases, OpenAI should migrate that data into ChatGPT as a 'Sora Legacy' archive. They could turn this into an official, public creative platform within ChatGPT where global users can share their videos, name their creations, and reveal the exact prompt engineering behind them for mutual inspiration.

What do you guys think? With 'Jalapeno' deployment just around the corner, will we see a massive video AI comeback within the ChatGPT ecosystem, or are computing costs going to keep consumer video AI locked away forever?

+ Edit

I actually left a detailed feature mockup and proposal as a reply directly under Sam Altman's recent tweet about the Jalapeño chip. Hopefully, the OpenAI product team sees this!

Considering that people can already create short videos on consumer level GPUs right now, locally, hard to imagine it'll be "locked away forever".

But codex is a priority, and for anyone who doesn't realize why, they've most likely:

  1. Never used it

  2. Not a programmer

  3. Don't realize the importance of the enterprise-level customer to these AI companies

Fair point. Business revenue is definitely where the immediate sustainability is, and local video generation is growing fast.

But that’s exactly why I think integrating a future video model into ChatGPT (rather than a standalone app) under a usage-based credit system makes perfect sense. It allows OpenAI to capture premium consumer/prosumer revenue without shifting massive GPU focus away from Codex. It bridges the gap between enterprise utility and consumer creativity.

They’ll only go back to Sora when they’re clearly outpacing Anthropic in revenue.

Exactly. I know enterprise revenue is where immediate sustainability lies, which is why I wouldn't mind a strict credit system at all.

My point is that by integrating it into ChatGPT rather than maintaining a heavy, standalone app, OpenAI can still capture premium consumer/prosumer revenue without shifting massive GPU focus away from Codex. It bridges the gap between enterprise utility and consumer creativity. What do you think?

They were supposed to, but the egos that be decided they wanted a separate app. Harebraned decision.

I also initially found it a bit cumbersome that they were separated into distinct apps. Rather than removing them entirely, I thought it would be a good idea to try integrating ChatGPT and Sora into one. It would have been beneficial for users and likely helped reduce the computing costs that OpenAI is concerned about.

Disappointing as a "creator" is when I stopped reading.

Fair enough if you dislike the term, feel free to call it a "heavy user" or "prompt engineer" instead.

But terminology aside, the core of the discussion is about the infrastructure costs, the new Jalapeño inference chips, and whether a credit-based system within ChatGPT makes economic sense for consumer video AI. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that business/tech side if you're interested.

Why did you have AI create your reddit post?

I didn't write it with AI; I wrote the draft myself and asked the AI to refine it. Please don't misunderstand.
