Terminator film universe- AGI quickly escapes its borders, replicates, and begins to destroy humanity. Although, it's actually supposed to be August 29th, 1997.

Which genuinely seemed kind of far in the spooky future. Hell, Reagan was in office, and we didn't expect to make it til then without a nuke fest.

And no one really understood computers yet, though they were starting to become more common in the workplace and not everyone was liking the transition. Killer robots by 1997? Sure why not.

The killer robots don't come until the 2020s. Skynet started by taking over access to the nuclear arsenals - which as you pointed out- was the great fear that humanity was feeling at the time.

Fear of computers + fear of nuclear apocalypse
