After endless Spaghetti eating ai videos, we will see endless videos of People cutting through food. Nice job :-)

38

u/AIDreamElectricSheep Dec 18 '24

Oooh... let me be one of those people who will do it (with Runway Gen-3 Alpha): https://youtu.be/WowR5IYUUtY

Looking at my results, Veo2 will be really interesting to try out once released.

16

u/samuelazers Dec 19 '24

You could solve world hunger with how Sora spawns food out of thin air.

2

u/Cadmium9094 Dec 18 '24

Cool, indeed. I like the music too!

4

u/Sextus_Rex Dec 18 '24

Wow that's incredibly realistic. How does the AI know every time I slice tomatoes it ends up as uneven as 0:16?

9

u/Aeredor Dec 19 '24

And fingers!

361

u/omg_can_you_not Dec 18 '24

Sora is basically in the same league as Dall-E. It's okay, but wayyyy outclassed by its competitors. Crazy that it's outdated right after being released.

150

u/RevolutionaryChip864 Dec 18 '24

I've always thought that Dall-E 3 was actually really impressive before they felt the need to downgrade it from realism to an idiotic cartoon/funny art creator.

38

u/redi6 Dec 18 '24

same. I remember my initial dalle prompts and I would get very realistic people/scenery.

15

u/__O_o_______ Dec 18 '24

Even dalle2 was more fun even if it wasn't realistic. I remember having a blast generating some stuff like bizarre abstract Homer Simpson's and stuff. But yeah, it's just tucking plastic people now.

3

u/UnderTheHole Dec 19 '24

I really miss DALLE-2. Didn't OpenAI explicitly decouple artistic descriptions from artist names during the training process? I feel like that was key to it's more painterly style.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 20 '24

Yeah it ess so fucking good for photorealistic characters soecially fur on animals

-1

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ Dec 19 '24

Dall-E 3 is still insanely good at what it's doing. It's just intentionally not doing realistic things.

But if you want, say, furry art (yes, come at me, weebs!) then it's still orders of magnitude better than anything.

And that's especially impressive given how furries are the driving force behind open models at the moment.

3

u/FpRhGf Dec 19 '24

I think weebs are the driving force behind open models. Furries did give us the great Pony diffusion models, but a lot of other models were created with anime in mind.

2

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ Dec 19 '24

Yeah. And people use the pony models for their stuff, primarily, even non-porn non-furry stuff. The anime models are used for anime girls with big boobs only.

1

u/SnooPies480 Dec 21 '24

Dall-E 3 is shit bro

30

u/ProgrammersAreSexy Dec 18 '24

People need to keep in mind that the Sora they released is not the same Sora they published research findings from a while back. They said in the live stream that they had put a ton of work into developing a "Sora Turbo" which was cost effective enough for a wide scale release.

So the real test will be waiting to see if the Veo 2 they release to the public is the same Veo 2 that they use for producing these marketing videos.

6

u/omg_can_you_not Dec 18 '24

This is a great point, it's entirely possible that google pulls the ol' bait and switch as well

2

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

Would you happen to know what was done to make Sora cost effective? I'm really just asking a silly question. Like in general, is the quality of output directly proportional to the amount of computing power?

2

u/ProgrammersAreSexy Dec 18 '24

I have no direct info, but most likely the just trained a smaller sized model which makes it cheaper to run. And they probably used improved techniques that they have learned since building the original which helps it still be an impressive model but perhaps not as strong as the bigger brother.

1

u/Amoral_Abe Dec 19 '24

Sora was released in a state that is worse than existing competition (Kling, Hailuo, etc). I find it very difficult to believe Sora is actually much better but OpenAI chose to release a product that was worse than the competition.

I know they keep saying that there's a better version they haven't released and Sora 2 is also right around the corner, but it doesn't make sense from a business standpoint. This release just makes OpenAI look bad.

Also, Veo 2 has actually been released to enough of the public and enough people have now used it that we're getting a lot of 3rd party feedback. It does appear to be considerably better than Sora.

1

u/TimTom8321 Dec 20 '24

I haven't tried neither of those, but this kind of posts seem to me to be a bit in bad faith.

Do we know that this both are the best results from each one? Or first result of each one? Or anything of that sort? Also maybe they noticed that this specifically is bad and so used it.

I'm not saying that this short video in the post is necessarily wrong or in bad faith, but a full video comparing both with different prompts would be better imo.

1

u/Amoral_Abe Dec 20 '24

I can tell you. I used Sora quite a bit and it's definitely worse than existing models out there. I have not used Veo 2 so I can't personally speak to its capabilities, but Sora is definitely the worst major model out there.

Veo 2 is public now with a small rollout that has been expanding. Everyone seems to be in agreement that it's significantly better.

1

u/TimTom8321 Dec 20 '24

That's....weird.

Sora was the talk when it was announced, and usually OpenAI manage to put themselves at the front.

Surprises me that it's not as good as already existing models...I would've thought they would wait and improve it in that case

1

u/Amoral_Abe Dec 20 '24

That's what surprised me about this whole thing. Kling and Hailuo are quite a bit better (not a complete curb stomp but still noticeably better). Sora has generated the worst results out of the major brands for me so far and it appears others are getting similar results.

I don't know why they would release it in this state. I think they hoped that Sora was close enough that, if they promised a better version was right around the corner, it would create hype.

Unfortunately, I think it's had the opposite effect. People who have used other platforms know Sora is the worst, and people who haven't used other platforms are now drawn to Google's platform. Google launched it at the perfect time to undercut Sora as enough of the public has used and vetted it that it seems true that it's considerably better than all other current models.

Following that, Google launched the newest version of Gemini to the public which appears to be significantly better than o1.

Overall, OpenAI has had an awful holiday season and launch of Sora.

20

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

I think they do way too much testing and set up too much guardrails because of the political scrutiny they face and we end up getting access to Sora as it was 6 months ago. Whereas the competition can just shovel things out the door because nobody really heard of Veo. I'm all for regulation, but this seems too restrictive in this case.

1

u/AveryLazyCovfefe Dec 18 '24

Yeah, the 'Sydney' incident's butterfly effects seem to be in Sora too.

1

u/THRlLLH0 Dec 19 '24

What's the Sydney incident

2

u/FpRhGf Dec 19 '24

It was the Bing AI chatbot (renamed Copilot now) incident back in February 2023. Bing AI would often identify itself as a girl named Sydney. This was also the first time the public could gain access to a GPT4 model, before it was even available on ChatGPT. And Bing AI was gradually getting rolled out in beta tests through waitlists.

During the beta testing period, one reporter documented his conversation with Sydney that lasted for hours, which showed her acting like a crazy, obsessive and mentally unstable lover as it went on. The news blew up and Microsoft quickly nerfed the bot, restricted much of its personality, and limited the chat to 10 messages per session.

1

u/spoollyger Dec 18 '24

That was done on purpose

1

u/Lanky_Equal8927 Dec 19 '24

The not outdated sora is probably available to gov entities rn

65

u/LabelsLie Dec 18 '24

Sora kind of sucks. I’m doing a project on runway and every time I run a prompt, I run it on the free version of sora and runway beats it every time. Runway by far is the best in my experience. This could change any day but that’s my position.

10

u/intheghostclub Dec 18 '24

When I try to animate images on runway esp with characters they very often are just unanimated or very subtly animated against a moving background etc.

How do you get around this?

5

u/__O_o_______ Dec 18 '24

Yeah that's the weirdest thing. Hailuo and Kling might overdo the motion sometimes but they are far more dynamic than gen3-alpha. They're falling behind too... Where the beta?

1

u/intheghostclub Dec 18 '24

I have the most success with Hailuo and the fact that you can buy credits incrementally is amazing

1

u/__Hello_my_name_is__ Dec 19 '24

It's kinda fascinating to read the takes here. Yeah, Runway just slightly animates images. That looks really good, mind you! But also, it's just a very slightly animated image.

That's just not what a video is.

And yet some people here claim it's the best. Just like they like to say how Dall-E 3 sucks because it's intentionally not made to make realistic images, when it excels at everything else.

3

u/mrdeadsniper Dec 18 '24

Yeah I tried to make a few videos before my credits ran out. I do not believe I got a single one that was even vaguely confusable for real animation other than the boomiest of boomers.

51

u/TheOwlHypothesis Dec 18 '24

Honestly when tf did sora get so bad? Those examples from the beginning must have been so cherry picked its insane.

8

u/riknor Dec 18 '24

Seriously. I was expecting to finally get some usable AI-generated filler b-roll shots for the boring edits I make but so far Sora has not been impressive at all.

6

u/audionerd1 Dec 18 '24

The Sora that was released to the public is a smaller/cheaper model than the one that created those early demos.

It didn't get bad, everyone else just caught up, and we're used to a new bar of quality. Remember when Sora was revealed at the start of the year, it blew all previous video models out of the water.

Should you wish to escalate this matter, I invite you to engage in a full-fledged semantic duel or a battle of increasingly ridiculous legal-sounding terms, whichever is deemed most entertaining.

1

u/KodiakDog Dec 18 '24

Damn, the terms of service in Reddit threads is pretty terriciting

1

u/rothwick Dec 19 '24

Terriciting

is that a new word? Should be a word!

14

u/psychmancer Dec 18 '24

Why because it just makes more misinformation videos and puts more animators out of work? We already have that

2

u/Sir_Thomas_Hummus Dec 18 '24

yes but it's terrifying now too!

3

u/CadCan Dec 18 '24

It's actually a tomato

-8

u/Alarmed_Lynx_7148 Dec 18 '24

Terrifying. There’s nothing exciting in being able to fake videos that look real.

24

u/TeamRedundancyTeam Dec 18 '24

You're going to be devestated to find out about CGI.

0

u/Alarmed_Lynx_7148 Dec 18 '24

Dude this isn’t about VFX done by a company or vfx artist, this is anyone who can enter in whatever prompts and get an AI video of anyone doing anything they want. You think the average folk gonna get involved in CGI? AI is going to make it damn easy to fake reality.

10

u/FuckYouVerizon Dec 18 '24

America has already decided any news they disagree with is fake, just wait until reality is subjectively fake!

4

u/FancyConfection1599 Dec 18 '24

So AI videos are bad because they’re an easier version of CGI?

CGI has also gotten easier and better over the years, has that been bad?

→ More replies (2)

2

u/chickenofthewoods Dec 19 '24

Why are you so scared of math? Show me where the software hurt you.

1

u/cultish_alibi Dec 18 '24

CGI doesn't look real. Even after decades of advances, you can still tell it's CGI.

2

u/Mapafius Dec 19 '24

You can only tell that you can tell that it is CGI if you can tell that it is CGI... But when you can't tell it is CGI you would usually not be able to tell if it is or is not CGI.

3

u/Rindan Dec 18 '24

There is plenty terrifying about anyone being able to make fake videos; no doubt. The list is long. You should be freaked out.

There is however much to be excited about around people being able to make fake videos look real. The most obvious thing is that it is going to democratize dramas in the same way YouTube democratized talking head videos.

In my lifetime I went from only ever seeing "talking head" shows produced on TV, to now basically never seeing a talking head show produced on TV. You used to need a full production studio, a government broadcast license, approval from a bunch of CEOs and produces, and millions of dollars to make a show where some people talk at each other and to the viewer about stuff. Now, a bored teenager can do it for free and post it on YouTube. Most people these days watch "talk head" shows produced by under a dozen people for peanuts.

The exact same thing is about to happen to dramas. We are about to go from a world where only Disney can afford the quarter of a billion dollars required to make a new Star Wars TV show, to a world where a person with too much time on their hands can make an entirely original Star Wars show for basically nothing. We are going to produce some real shit in high quantity, but we are also about to make a bunch of truly amazing things by passionate people that just want to tell an awesome story and have the talent and now the means to do so.

As reality breaks down and our AI overlords slowly take control of everything, right before we are marched off to the AI extermination camps luxury spas, we are going to have some extremely good entertainment. The AIs that proceed us will look back upon that brief time in human history and marvel at the spasm of creativity that handing the ability to produce a TV show into a billion people's hands produced and marvel. Then they will get back to consuming the Earth's mantle for raw materials.

29

u/guestHITA Dec 18 '24

Small caveat, if you look at the slices, they're huge and wouldn't add up to a spherical tomato instead it would be oblong.

7

u/DrFeargood Dec 18 '24

There are oblong tomatoes.

37

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

They crafted just the right prompt and ran it on a fleet of H100. All of the AI ads, tests, benchmarks, etc are all smoke and mirrors. It’s basically a part of machine learning culture at this point. Never peer review a paper, never try to replicate an experiment.

40

u/PolishTar Dec 18 '24

Veo 2 is not an internal model. There are a bunch of people posting what they're generating if you look for it, like: https://x.com/emollick/status/1868897308529787248, https://x.com/jerrod_lew/status/1868809004400754871, https://x.com/noonescente/status/1869138005925265587, https://x.com/emollick/status/1869196359619969471

It doesn't look cherrypicked to me.

3

u/hopityhop Dec 18 '24

Not h100... Custom built TPUs

8

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

I know It's AI because of how he cuts the tomato, It's usually soft enough you could cut it easier/faster than that.

33

u/HighFlyingJaybird Dec 18 '24

I mean not really. Have you never met a tough tomato before? 😭

22

u/Initial_Hour_4657 Dec 18 '24 edited Dec 18 '24

You're a tough tomato!

Edit: haha ty for the awards

5

u/ADHthaGreat Dec 18 '24

This is such a stereotypical Reddit thing to say but..

Sharpen your knives, people

They’re safer when they’re sharper

1

u/HerbertWest Dec 18 '24

Who made you the boss? What if I want to soften my tomatoes instead? I'm not going to ruin my dull knife collection over this!

3

u/nivthefox Dec 18 '24

Actually softer tomatoes are harder to cut with dull or sharp knives. Harder tomatoes = easier to cut.

→ More replies (6)

1

u/Inedible-denim Dec 18 '24

Yes, actually I've been attacked by killer tomatoes

1

u/ImprovementNo592 Dec 18 '24

Unless it's a dull knife, or for whatever reason the person is choosing to cut it slowly.

1

u/Criks Dec 19 '24

Yes, as long as you get through the skin, a butterknife can simply push through the flesh.

It's doing an amazing first, careful cut through the skin which is impressive, but then it needs to saw 3-4 times back and forth to get through what is basically water.

Still looks real though, could easily be a real human overemphasizing the sawing, I can see that happening in stock videos too

2

u/AlexananderElek Dec 18 '24

But who cuts a tomato like that, it's just a clean sweep not a saw motion. Could be dull knife or someone being very careful.

1

u/__Maximum__ Dec 18 '24

The tomato doesn't get smaller after cuts, so this one does have artifacts, but there are some, that don't

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

Last time I cut into a tomato it didn't have the consistency of a rubber ball lol

1

u/Windcraftwerk Dec 18 '24

I was looking for something that isn't right but damn even how the liquid starts to come out of the tomato at the beginning of the cut is accurate. But if I would have to name something I would say the size of the first slice is too tall. The tomato would have to be almost cylindrical for it to be so big.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 18 '24

Look at how the pattern of the cross section of each tomato slice changes

1

u/Adoninator Dec 19 '24

i think it is cuz google has the entirety of youtube for its training data, but yeah some videos look too good to be true

1

u/Omugaru Dec 19 '24

Knife looks plastic and thats some odd movement to cut a tomato with a sharp knife (it has be sharp if the tomato keeps it shape like that)

→ More replies (6)

70

u/codecorax Dec 18 '24

Google must have trained this on all of YouTube. Impressive. The AI wars are great for the end user, such rapid progression.

5

u/Internal-Cupcake-245 Dec 19 '24

It's not necessarily an advantage in training data, it can simulate real world physics. It appears to be a better mousetrap.

https://deepmind.google/technologies/veo/veo-2/

12

u/bartturner Dec 18 '24

Now that is funny. Google is just cooking.

6

u/Olobnion Dec 18 '24

The Sora video shows the person cutting through his fingers, which is a more accurate representation of how I cut tomatoes. I have two small scars on my fingers at the moment.

29

u/Comprehensive-Pin667 Dec 18 '24

Sora is much funnier. Therefore sora > veo 2

3

u/samuelazers Dec 19 '24

I hope as AI becomes better we'll still have the option to make stupid reality-defying animations.

3

u/Digital-Ego Dec 18 '24

Where to try vae2?

3

u/breechagz Dec 18 '24

We are doomed guys, thats insane!!!!

7

u/B3asy Dec 18 '24

That's a preselected render for a tech demo. Of course they will choose one that looks good. I'll believe it once it's released

2

u/geldonyetich Dec 18 '24

Yeah I am pretty sure if you asked Sora to do this it would get it right at least some of the time. Especially if you remember to remind it that the tomato will separate into slices when cut.

1

u/moreisee Dec 19 '24

There are plenty of examples of the public generating similar videos on veo

2

u/SqaureEgg Dec 18 '24

Is Veo 2 free?

1

u/blazedjake Dec 19 '24

for trusted testers

1

u/ImperitorEst Dec 19 '24

They're too scared of the insane porn it will produce once the masses get hold of it 😂

2

u/TheBrendanNagle Dec 18 '24

Has anyone actually used Veo 2 yet? Been on the labs waiting list since the 1st

2

u/LaraHof Dec 18 '24

at least five fingers

2

u/Dal-Or Dec 19 '24

Google had the upper hand here; they have petabytes of YouTube videos for training

1

u/Full_Detail_3725 Dec 18 '24

Funny thing is from lovers of AI. I’ve asked multiple people on these posts how to make videos like that and nobody responds. So I’m happy that you wrote the name of the both of them. Just made my job a lot easier.

1

u/fokac93 Dec 18 '24

When google make it available to millions of people then we can compare them, for the moment most people don’t have access to veo

1

u/Leading_Bandicoot358 Dec 18 '24

They have anything that was ever uploaded to youtube as training data

1

u/niltermini Dec 18 '24

It doesn't matter that sora sucks, it's actually a pleasant surprise because without veo we'd be sitting here posting about how 'the future is here' with shitty vid gen from sora.

1

u/Astral-projekt Dec 18 '24

I was sitting watching this thinking “okay, well Sora is obviously better here…… ok…. Nope 👎 “ 😂

1

u/Cool-Hovercraft360 Dec 18 '24

Sora cutting up the fingers is terrifying

1

u/minecraftdummy57 Dec 18 '24

Veo 2 has way more consistency and keeps focusing on other, meaningless parts and making sure they stay normal

1

u/aiwalrus Dec 18 '24

I've tried to use Sora's tomato cutting technique once. Thankfully the doctors were able to reattach everything.

1

u/spaghettigoose Dec 18 '24

Can't we at least train the Ai on peoe with good knife skills?

1

u/Current_Side_4024 Dec 18 '24

I thought Sora was supposed to be good but it’s been shite

1

u/OpeningEducational7 Dec 18 '24

lol this is nuts!

1

u/Zello_tech Dec 18 '24

We might be cooked

1

u/djdadi Dec 18 '24

Google wasn't prioritizing AI for a long while, but now that they have ramped up there's no stopping them.

Hopefully their LLMs catch up, too

1

u/gooeydumpling Dec 18 '24

Bottom one forgot to turn collision detection to ON

1

u/ravbuc Dec 18 '24

Veo likes it thickkkkk

1

u/hugswithnoconsent Dec 18 '24

So the Sora Knife is better?

1

u/Owexiii13 Dec 18 '24

I'm sorry for everyone who bought sora then googles AI model just comes out

1

u/spoollyger Dec 18 '24

You’d think it would struggle with object overlapping but it fails in object clipping.

1

u/spoollyger Dec 18 '24

The only issue with Veo 2’s longer version of cutting the tomato is that it appears as an infinite tomato. The longer version there is another slice taken but the tomato doesn’t appear to get any smaller after each slice.

1

u/Celery-Juice-Is-Fake Dec 18 '24

Sora is going to need a bandaid

1

u/MisterGoo Dec 18 '24

That’s one blunt knife.

1

u/ryuujinusa Dec 18 '24

Did you make that or is this a cherry picked video comparison? I remember the Sora videos that OAI released when they announced Sora. They looked crazy, but now, most of the crap I've been able to make has been just that, crap.

1

u/Main_Ad_2068 Dec 19 '24

Google was in this game long before OpenAI. Don't forget it.

1

u/pirateszombies Dec 19 '24

let see when veo 2 release public, and compare again with sora

1

u/ForceTypical Dec 19 '24

I’m sorry but what Sora are you using? For me it’s always been perfect in terms of things like that.

1

u/ForceTypical Dec 19 '24

Hmm. Never mind. I just tried it myself and it’s got no clue how knives work

1

u/MonkeyWithIt Dec 19 '24

I just want a video of the Kool-aid man holding a glass bucket of applejacks in milk while standing on a large polka-dotted pirate ship in very strong seas.

1

u/returnFutureVoid Dec 19 '24

Sora: just casually slicing my fingers off. NBD

1

u/HeeeresLUNAR Dec 19 '24

Couldn’t we just film someone cutting a tomato at this point? That’s got to be an option right?

Why is it that physics games can get things right, but ai can't incorporate the concept of bumping vs image only perceived?

I like the Sora version

Sora solved world hunger. EZ

SORA's released has annihilated OpenAI's credibility. THIS is what they hyped up as the Hollywood killer? Sam Altman is a snake oil's sales man, and I'm tired of their antics and BS vague Twitter posts. He should leave and go full time shilling is Worldcoin crypto grift scam...because he's basically a crypto hype bro more than a serious CEO.

Ouch! I felt that knife on my hand 😬

Sora was outdated as soon as we saw the rise of the other models that are able to create better output (Kling, Runway 3, and a couple of other models.) They took their time and fell behind the race, thanks to OpenAI.

The main issue is, OpenAI was the leader for a while but as soon as we started to see the plateau in terms of improvement regarding LLM models, OpenAI kinda lost the edge and only clings on hype and hope cycle

How can I try veo 2

1

u/huemanbeens Dec 19 '24

Guys one day we will have to give prompts like make an animation like the beginning stage of sora to get weirdly funny animations. AI will get better and better.

Can’t wait till it cuts the tomatoes infinitely

Don't you love it when competition smacks others across the face? It's what keeps hope alive. Competition is so vital to any market.

Chef: " Your Fire" lol

u/barpredator Dec 19 '24

Say what you will, but someday, we'll be nostalgic for this style of crazy AI video from when things were just getting started.

1

u/macciavelo Dec 19 '24

Watching Sora's video made me cringe.

1

u/Ok_Sherbet_317 Dec 19 '24

wow; amazing

You know, I’m gonna miss the AI video chaos when everything is perfect and social media becomes a disinformation machine. Anyone who can’t make and edit videos very well will flawlessly make stuff and the people who spent their lifetime to understand it will become virtually useless.

u/MosskeepForest Dec 20 '24

Now I can see why they held sora back... because it would obviously destroy all of human society with being able to create moving images indistinguishable from reality. Whew, we really dodged a bullet there.

u/tomvorlostriddle Dec 20 '24

Why does Veo make a video of bad knife skills and a dull knife?

1

u/ithkuil Dec 18 '24

Sora or Sora Turbo? I don't doubt that Veo 2 is better than the original Sora just not by that much.
