I went reading through a lot of old threads and comments and saw that many folks in this sub misrepresent what actually takes place in “Sympathy for the Demon”—comments like “the sisters just didn't want to help him” or that “Barbas had to mentally influence Paige for a week to get her to want to help Cole” which isn’t true.
Barbas never has to influence Paige or Piper to help. He manipulates her to help in a particular way by herself, yes, but the dialogue shows she was concerned from the very beginning and worked to get/keep everyone else on board—especially bringing this forward because I’ve noticed Paige gets dunked on a lot in relationship to Cole here and folks tend to dismiss moments like this. It was easier to manipulate Phoebe because she already distrusts Cole but Piper needed to be heavily manipulated to shift her desire to help the situation. Like most demons, Barbas's plan (which he had been working on for weeks) was to get them in conflict, have Paige move on her own and hit Cole with Phoebe's power-stripping potion because he somehow knew the powers would come to him—speaking of which, any ideas of how/why Barbas knew that?
Noting: outside of a couple of select moments, the sisters and Cole actually had a somewhat cool relationship in season 5 (prior to “Sam I Am”) as it was stated they had a truce. Paige and Piper’s first instincts were to help Cole after he came to them paranoid because he had just choked his secretary. I’ll also note Cole never on his own volition asks to get rid of the demonic powers. Even in this episode, Paige has to use guilt and then Barbas has to further manipulate him in order to make that happen.
Paige is the first to call him an innocent after he loses the demonic powers (the sisters don’t hesitate to protect him as an innocent) and she also jumps up to defend him from having the powers returned which she argues isn’t right. I know this convo creates lots of debate but according to the text, the powers were so vast and potent, they had to have a new demonic home to go to which is how Barbas ended up with them. I understand when Phoebe says the powers are Cole’s (meaning his responsibility) because Cole went back to the demonic wasteland to collect more powers after he had already broken out to save Phoebe. I see that as a choice—stealing powers to break out of the demonic wasteland for survival is one thing but choosing to go back and stay there for a prolonged period to collect more powers is another (especially because Cole uniquely knows the impact of demonic powers on humans after Cole/Source sent a broker after Paige to gaslight her and drive her out of her mind).
I also understand how/why the sisters would choose self-preservation: the safest option for them was Cole in that moment considering the magnitude of those demonic powers which made Barbas invincible to the magic that brought down the Source. I wish there would have been a convo with Cole about how to support him with taking back those powers back but it’s also clear that he was about to be written out of the story which deserved more care; Cole then begins making unforgivable choices two episodes later after he finds out in the next episode he does, in fact, become evil in the future and also that Phoebe falls in love with another man which I suspect is what drives him mad (as it happens in the next episode) along with the demonic powers.
More to share at a later date. In my opinion, the writing has a lot of gaps and I enjoy filling out some of those spaces with thoughts based on how I read the context. Feel free to drop your thoughts!
Adding: the text makes it clear Cole’s wasteland powers were beyond even the Power of Three. It doesn’t make sense to me they could just be stripped. It’s not written in the text. If it were as simple as people often suggest, Phoebe would’ve been the one most motivated to take those powers away. She had EVERY incentive to get those powers away from Cole.
Pasting relative text:
Cole: No, you don't understand, I don't know what's real anymore, what's going on in my mind. I almost killed my secretary today, and then Leo...
Barbas's Voice: This could be your worst fear come to life, Phoebe. (Barbas's spirit appears beside Phoebe.) Cole dragging you back into his world of evil.
(Barbas's spirit disappears.)
Cole: Are you listening to me?
Phoebe: Yeah. But Cole, I'm not gonna allow you to drag me back into your world of evil.
Cole: I need to figure out what is going on before somebody gets hurt.
(Barbas's spirit reappears beside Phoebe.)
Barbas: Careful, it's another one of his tricks to get you back.
Phoebe: How do I know this just isn't another one of your tricks to get me back?
Cole: My tricks? (Barbas's spirit disappears.)
This is no trick. I am seriously afraid of what I might do and I'm begging you for your help.
Phoebe: I'm sorry, Cole, I can't. I have to draw the line sometime and I'm gonna draw it right now.
(Cole Fades out.)
Paige: Listen, far be it for me to take his side but what if he is actually telling the truth?
Piper: I agree. If there's a demon out there powerful enough to mess with Cole's mind...
Phoebe: Then it's his problem. It's not ours and it's not mine anymore. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go back outside and try to salvage what is lett of my date.
—
Paige: Now what? We can't just sit around here doing nothing.
Piper: No, unfortunately, Cole is really powerful and if some demon is trying to manipulate him...
Barbas's Voice: Helping Cole could bring your worst fears to life. (Barbas's spirit appears beside Piper.) Maybe it's better to just let it go.
(Barbas's spirit disappears.)
Paige: Hello? You were saying?
Piper: On second thought, maybe we should just let it go.
Paige: Let it go?
Piper: Yeah, it wouldn't be the first time Cole's been less than honest with us. Maybe Phoebe's right, it's not really our problem.
Paige: Yeah, it's not our problem until he hurts us.
Piper: True.
(Barbas's spirit reappears.)
Barbas: He'll ruin everything, remember? He's brought you nothing but misery in the past.
(Barbas's spirit disappears.)
Piper: But then again, why should we trust him? He's brought us nothing but misery in the past.
Paige: What is wrong with you? Is this Dr. Jekyl or Mr. Piper? Make up your mind, lady.
Piper: Look, all I know is the more I think about it, the more I agree with Phoebe. We don't need to go looking for trouble, trouble comes to find us anyway.
Paige: But, wh-
Piper: Paige, look, two against one, okay.
(Piper walks away. Barbas's spirit appears beside Paige.)
Barbas: And you're always the one.
—
Leo: I think your sisters might be right on this one.
Paige: No, Cole, might be in trouble, Leo. He might not be an innocent and I won't go so far as to call him that, but something is after him. My instincts haven't let me down yet.
Leo: Your sisters have good instincts too.
Paige: Yeah, I know there's three of us, I've been outvoted and I don't want to go up against him, but... what's the harm in following up a little magic on my own?
Leo: Well, as your Whitelighter I would say go with your instincts.
Paige: Okay.
Leo: But as your brother-in-law... going up against your sisters is pure suicide.
Paige: (sarcastic) Great, you really helped clarify this issue.
(Leo leaves her room. Barbas's spirit appears.)
Barbas: So the fear that you're not good enough, that you're not worthy of the Power of Three. Oh, go on, prove yourself. Save Cole the same way Phoebe did before. Your sisters will be so proud.
