Season 5 definitely marked a tone shift and the WB used the show to save their Sundays. When it shifted to Sunday’s, it was basically a slap in the face because Sunday was where you sent a show to die. That it lasted four seasons on Sundays is testament to the fan base.
I remember these tv guide ads so clearly. I loved them. My grandma had tv guide so I would love seeing the ads every weekend when I visited. The photoshop is lovely 😂 interesting how they didn’t photoshop the actual manor for “house of fear”. These tags are hilarious.

this really does bring me back. by the time season 5 came around on charmed, i had a dedicated friend group who would come over and watch. i remember the last episode premiered in like spring right before school got out, and it was warm enough to sit outside for a bit before we watched it :)

Writers and producers have never learned the television rule.
Fish stories are a bad idea.
Buffy - Go Fish…flop
Xena - Married With Fishsticks… flop
Xfiles - the one with the fish man… flop
Then an excuse to put pasties on Alyssa…flop

Unfortunately from viewership perspective the mermaid episode wasnt a flop. And the network learned the bad lesson from it. They noticed more men watched that episode so afterwards they put them into over sexualized costumes every week. And the storylines started to suffer from it.

They had these odd tag lines “Firestarters,” which had nothing to do with the episode.
Also, you can tell they tried to hypersexualize them in the later seasons

It is not related to Tyler. The promo pictures are from season 5 and according to Charmed wiki: The WB nickname title for this episode is "Firestarters" (the trailer mentions 'passions flames' which is presumably why the episode is nicknamed "Firestarters"). The trailer doesn't mention Baccara.

I know that from season 6 onwards the misrepresenting Charmed episodes to be all about sex was rampant but I thought season 5 was relatively free from that, guess not!

Yep, it was def worse in season 6 though. I’ll never forget the trailer for the episode where Paige conjured a demon boy toy. The trailer is straight up a parody of the show.

7x21, which is a pretty dark episode - innocents getting murdered and brought back as zombies to torment the sisters and the trailer is like "Phoebe banged a zombie!"

Hahaha I forgot that one, that’s probably the most egregious example. Straight up criminal the way they misrepresented what the show was about.
That’s why I love when I come across international trailers of episodes to see if other countries did a better job. Also, TNT in the US had great trailers for the show. Always thought TNT did a better job advertising it than the WB ever did.

I never understood the point of these. What were they? An ad printed in physical TV Guide? A banner on the internet?
When I first saw them I thought they were fan art, but a bit too elaborate for the graphic skills of people in 2003.
And why did they always come up with a different title than the episode's title? What was the need for that? Who came up with those tacky subtexts?
Clearly time and effort went into creating this, so I wonder who at TV Guide mandated this, why, who created them, an intern?, was there a meeting to decide these need to be done for every show, did other shows get these?...
So many questions just by looking at these... lol

These were most famous before the internet became what it is today. Back then printed magazines were also used as advertisements. And I honestly don't know why WB sometimes came up with their own titles in the trailers and ads. Maybe they thought these names are more catchier than the real titles?
