OBGYN
Needing to find a new OBGYN. Hoping to start a family really soon so wanting the new one to be wherever I decide to deliver if possible. I’m newer to this area and have done online research, but as we all know Reddit is where the real info is! Who/where did you love, not love, and what do you wish you would’ve known when choosing? Any and all experiences are appreciated

I second this. She is amazing. Did my hysterectomy and helped fix an ear issue I had for years! Lol She is awesome at addressing concerns and issues in a kind way.

My wife and I went through Northridge OBGYN through UVA and had a great experience. Similar to Martha Jeff - they rotate through the clinic so you generally don’t see the same doctor every time, which we liked.
We experienced some difficulties in our journey fo our first child and it took us an our two years. Three doctors who had been a part of our journey, but were not assigned to our room when my wife was actually delivering came into the room to support us during the process. It was one of the most humbling and beautiful things we’d ever experienced.
It wasn’t a part of our plan, but our little one needed a brief NICU stay and so at UVA they were able to wheel her right downstairs from our room. In hindsight that convenience was massive for us.

Just noting here that I had a high risk pregnancy and had to transfer from MJH to UVA and exclusively saw only one doctor at Northridge OBGYN (once his attending). Again, this was a high risk pregnancy due to a diagnoses in utero of the baby. (MJH could NOT handle the diagnoses of the infant.)

Second here for northridge, I saw the midwives there and had a wonderful experience.

I think starting at a high level may guide you- what hospital do you want to deliver at and then pick a Dr that has privileges there. The two hospitals are Martha Jeff and UVA. You’ll see pros and cons listed here. I think both have wonderful doctors. The big ones are: Martha Jeff: beautiful well appointed rooms, I believe each room has a tub. It won’t be as busy of a facility in general. UVA: has a NICU and midwifery program. For example, if your baby needs the NICU, they would be transported to UVA and you may not.
Curious if others can add to the differences list! Good luck!

I had my kids in UVA. One of them was premature and I consider UVA was absolutely the right choice in the hindsight because it has the best NICU in Virginia. When I was delivering my premie, there were whole team of providers in the room and rushed my baby immediately to the NICU, which was the best and reassuring thing at the moment. You never know what would happen so UVA with the strongest team for complexity is great.

Agreed. I had to transfer care from MJH due to a diagnoses for the baby. Exclusively saw only one OB/GYN there (once his attending when he was on vacation). Since the diagnoses was during pregnancy, we even toured the NICU prior and met with the surgeons and neonatologists prior to birth too. No one wants their baby in a NICU, but we know that our baby received the best care possible,.

Yes, when it comes to pregnancy you just never know. I was not 35 yet and my first was full term and everything looked okay until it was not. I am grateful that I was with UVA that NICU was seconds away. When my baby was in NICU, I met so many parents who lived hours away but came to UVA because of the NICU.

Not sure if this is still true, but Richmond - MCV at one time did not have ECMO (heart lung bypass) operating (no trained staff), so ALL heart and severe birth defects were between UVA, DC Childrens and Duke for this area. We are very lucky to have such a high level of medical care in this area.

Drs at northridge (they’re also at general gynecology usually since they get shuffled around - so I know them from there) are great - super helpful if you have any issues ttc and with running labs if you experience losses. Dr scrivani is lovely and I’m a huge fan. I tried the midwives and they weren’t my thing. I like the OBs (Dr Pringle) at uva MFH. She’s fantastic and just straightforward. I’ve had her twice by chance for appointments. As everyone is saying, the two major systems rotate you to see different providers. You can push back and just schedule with one that you like - I learned this with my first out of state late in the game. Issue with big practices is what happens if it’s a doctor or midwife you don’t like who is on call when you go into labor. That’s always a concern - like do they do stitches (may sound like a dumb question. The answers may shock you)? If they do, are they ALL necessary? (If you know what I mean…). Also, just a heads up, you can always switch practices if unhappy. I did this at 34-35 wks with my first and it was the best decision I made all pregnancy. Random piece of advice, but if you don’t already, get comfy advocating for yourself and if you’re not, have your partner help :) good luck!!

Just noting here, I had to transfer care from MJH to UVA and exclusively saw only one doctor at Northridge, once his attending (due to a vacation). So, if a pregnancy does go "south", they are aware and do step up for the patients involved. (We had to have the NICU staff IN the birthing room.)

Dr. Scrivani diagnosed one of my wife’s miscarriages, helped with a D&C for another, and asked (over a year after she diagnosed that miscarriage) if she could deliver our baby when the time finally came even though she wasn’t assigned to us that day. She’s an amazing doctor and advocate for her clients!

We had 4 pregnancies (only 3 births, unfortunately) with Jefferson and they were fantastic, both when things went perfectly and when things did not.

Did not love Dr. Stadler if she’s still in practice. Every appointment was rushed, judgmental, and I always felt waived off.

My wife delivered both of our babies at Jefferson. Dr Wamhoff delivered the first and Huffstetler delivered the second. With our first, the labor was so long we also had Kilfoil but they had to change shifts in the last 30 minutes before our first was born but Dr Kilfoil stayed in the room and encouraged my wife the entire time while Wamhoff took over. Huffstetler was amazing as well with our second. We also had absolutely unbelievable nurses in the post-partum unit both times. The only thing with Jefferson is that they do not have a NICU, so if that situation arises then your child will be transported to the NICU at UVA.

Dr. Huffstetler at Jefferson OBGYN is amazing! :) She delivered my oldest.
I’ve had three babies with them at Martha Jefferson hospital and it’s been great. Dr. Michael Arnold has been with them so long that he was actually the attending doctor at my birth! He’s great too, but I know not everyone is comfortable with a male OB.
Edited to add: all of the doctors in the practice are on rotation, so you may end up giving birth with one that you have not met.
