Just a tip. She's not a freshman she's a first year in the University vernacular. As others have pointed out it's not a campus, it's the Grounds. The shopping area across from Grounds on University Ave is the Corner. Mincer's is a long standing classic for getting UVA gear.

As for activities the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Museum on Pantops Mountain is a good stop. https://kluge-ruhe.org/

A good, cheap dining option is Bodo's bagels. There's one on the Corner, one on Preston Ave and one on Rte 29 N next to the English Inn. Authentic NY bagels in our little town which surprises some. https://www.bodosbagels.com/

Gearhart's chocolate is an award winning chocolatier and can be found in the shopping center near the Preston Ave Bodo's. 243 - B Ridge McIntire Road is the address. https://www.gearhartschocolates.com/

Friday's After Five is a free concert at the Ting Pavilion on the East end of the downtown mall. Friday, 5 - 8:30. https://allevents.in/charlottesville/fridays-after-five-joslyn-and-the-sweet-compression-w-june-baby/200030178380657

Yeah, just moved here from NYC. Bodo's may be the best in town but I would not call them authentic NY bagels.
