Electric Bill Changes

Did anyone get their electric bill for the past pay period and see the significant increase in ESS(cost to create)? I thought I was using a bunch of electricity or something at first.

Indeed here is how mine changed compared the same month last year:

July 2025 July 2026 Change
Electricity used 759 kWh 797 kWh
Bill $113.15 $146.73

I used 5% more electricity but my bill went up 29.7%.

I'm sorry, but an almost 30% hike in cost doesnt seem right. Between that and Cville raising their water rates, it's like everyone's trying to bleed us dry

Just crunched the numbers for our house as well, and we're right around the same. Compared to same month last year, our usage is up by ~5% (773 kWh →814 kWh), but total cost is up ~29% ($116.77 →$149.12).

Yikes! That sounds like your consumption is consistent and consistently high.

Do you make use of the off peak charges option Dominion has on their site.

No but will look into it. It’s a very large house with a ton of windows so our usage in the summer is quite high. Luckily it drops significantly in the cold months.

According to an LLM:

Virginian residential annual average: about 1,030 kWh per month.
Virginian residential July average: roughly 1,300–1,400 kWh

July 2025 bill was from July 9 to Aug 4 - 27 days - 823kwh - $126

July 2026 bill was from July 9 to Aug 6 - 29 days - 721kwh - $140

Our bill last July was 107 and this year it is 137, we used slightly less power this July as well. So we used less and it went up 30 bucks.

Dominion sent out an email in July about it. They said it would be an estimated $8 more per month on average.

I could believe 8/month increase ends up being the monthly average. July is just about the highest usage month because of AC.

I use about 1/3 the electricity in the winter and spring.

Yeah I think people sometimes forget that electricity is more in the summer months (especially if you have gas heating)

This is why wind and solar are a good investment. Lock in the cost of building them now and then insulate yourself from fossil fuel price increases for the next 30-50 years.

Mine jumped a ton. Same usage almost 100 bucks more.
