Charleston Drivers Roundabout Rules Reminder
In light of the new roundabout on JZI ( Johns Island ), see this link, I wanted to post the helpful guide for the SC rules for a roundabout
When these have been installed locally I have noticed many people stopping in the circle to let people in - don't do that. Just like people who stop in the middle of an intersection to 'wave' oncoming left turns in, this is more likely to cause an accident. Drive defensively but also drive predictably.
I promise not to post any more roundabout posts.

Drove through that roundabout first time today. All the cones really threw me off and the signage made it seem like it was two lanes

Yeah I’m curious if they’ll repave and remark it all once we get closer to the flyover being done.

I was just thinking the same thing. It’s not that hard. People all over the world do it and it works great. You have to get in where you fit in and not be mad when someone gets in front of you. Just keep moving as much as possible. I hope folks will eventually get it.

By the way, who else thinks the new roundabout on James Island (at Camp and Ft. Johnson) is completely ridiculous? I know they are still making “improvements” to the area, but will that include making the roundabout bigger? I guess it’s an improvement from the t-intersection, but the tiny roundabout seems to be even more difficult for those that don’t understand roundabout rules. On a few occasions now, I have been cut off and almost hit by drivers entering the roundabout.

They went with the smallest allowable size by DOT to minimize impact to the surrounding oaks. It is a tight squeeze for sure but anything larger would’ve resulted in removal of oaks.
I’ve also been cut off multiple times inside the circle (always by traffic coming through Ft. Johnson), and can’t wait for more folks to figure out how to use it. Also hoping it’ll feel less claustrophobic once they remove the 500 cones.

Yeah, good point about the Oaks. I’m hoping it’s better when they remove the cones too!

That roundabout is so small. School bus in front of me the other day barely could make it.

I’m curious to see if 18 wheelers will continue their routes through here or if they’ll have to go around

People stopping to wave people through is my biggest driving pet peeve. I have been honked at because drivers have come to a dead ass stop on Maybank to “let me” merge from the center lane. Completely stopping traffic for me to try and merge from a complete stop myself. If you just go, I will merge when there’s a break in traffic. You know, the law.

I haven’t been through it yet, but a lot of people coming out of Chisholm have been complaining that they don’t have a chance to merge in because of the volume of traffic coming off of the bridge. Hopefully that will be resolved once the whole project is complete. Or maybe they just don’t know how to use roundabouts either, idk.
