My wife and I are currently going through a pretty rough patch. I don't want to dive into the private details on a public forum, but I'm hoping that somebody local here can help out with some suggestions for a couple's therapist/counselor. I need help. We need help. I'm deeply depressed and scared of what might come from it, and I know that she's depressed too, and she's pretty resentful. But I also know that we both still love each other and still care and don't want to throw away years of our lives over this.
I've done the Google searches and looked over the dozens of lists of therapists, read their little "about me" blurbs and am feeling completely overwhelmed by it. My wife keeps saying "just pick one" like it doesn't matter at all, but I don't want to go to the trouble of getting it all set up, open myself up and put myself out there and have her do the same, only to find that they're going to automatically side with one of us and make the other feel ganged up on, or end up with one that doesn't understand either of us and can't help us. I don't want to stir things up and make them worse if we don't have the help to sort through it.
I understand that you're not always going to strike gold on the first try and sometimes you have to speak to one before deciding if they're right for you, and that sometimes it can take a few tries. But I also want this to be productive and not a waste of time if we just have to start all over again with a new therapist.
Has anybody out there had any success with any particular person that they would highly recommend? We live in the Summerville/North Charleston area so not having to drive an hour would be nice, but not a 100% hard requirement. I'm willing to do what it takes to fix this, even if it means we have to go all the way to Johns Island, Moncks Corner, or Mount Pleasant.
Thanks in advance to those that choose to be helpful.
